Without this radiant idea—this delightful morning star, indicating that the luminary of eternity is going to rise, life would, to my view, darken into midnight melancholy. The expectation of living thus always, would be indeed a prospect of overwhelming despair. But thanks to that fatal decree that dooms us to die; thanks to that gospel which opens the visions of an endless life; and thanks above all to that Savior friend who has promised to conduct the faithful through the sacred trance of death, into scenes of Paradise and everlasting delight. —John Foster 23 BEST LOOKING Donnie Gilliam Pam Johnson MOST ACADEMIC Betty Gover Jeff Ralston MOST DEPENDABLE Jimbo Adams Diane Lankford SENIOR WITTIEST Barry Helm Debbie Stewart BEST ALL-AROUND MOST ATHLETIC Connie Dawson Patrice Peck Dannie Gilliam Steve Keltner SUPERLATIVES MOST COURTEOUS Kim Alford Susan Pence 26 CLASS FAVORITES 27 Fred Gander Cindy Peck Standing: CHARLES HESTER, Reporter: BRIAN MERCER. And this we know: Death is not Life effete, Life crushed, the broken pail. We who have seen So marvelous tiling know well the end not yet. Victor and vanquished are a-one in death: Coward and brave: friend, foe. Ghosts do not say, Come, what was your record when you drew breath? But a big blot has hid each yesterday So poor, so manifestly incomplete. And your bright Promise, withered long and sped. Is touched; stirs, rises, opens and grows sweet And blossoms and is you, when you are dead. Charles Hamilton Sorley In memory of two who have dedicated so much of their life here at Stanford. Mrs. Bright and Mrs. Jones will always be remembered. 44 “TWO SONNETS ON DEATH” I Saints have adored the lofty soul of you. Poets have whitened at your high renown. We stand among the many millions who Do hourly wait to pass your pathway down. You, so familiar, once were strange: we tried To live as of your presence unaware. But now in every road on every side We see your straight and steadfast signpost there. I think it like that signpost in my land Hoary and tall, which pointed me to go Upward, into the hills, on the right hand. The band this year has 34 members, somewhat smaller than last year, due to the formation of a middle band, the Junior High Band, which is made up of 6th and 7th graders. With the help of the administration in scheduling, this Junior High Band allows the younger students an extra year of training before their being placed in the High School Band. To begin the year, the band spent a week in early August at Hemlock Music Camp to prepare for marching season. Here they learned a basic half-time show to which other segments were added so that a different halftime show appeared for each home game. The Marching Band participated in all home football games, away games at Harrodsburg, Boyle County, and Garrard County, the Homecoming Parade and festivities. Tobacco Day Parade, Harrods-burg's Christmas Parade, Lindsay Wilson College's Homecoming Parade, and the Inaugural Parade in Frankfort. 66 The Concert B and got under way in January and has its first concert of the year on February 26 as a climax to a week of tour of Lincoln County grade schools and Boyle County and Harrodsburg High School. This concert included the 5th Grade Beginning Band, the Junior High Band, and the newly formed Stage Band. Students from the Junior High Band and High School Band attended clinics held at various colleges in the area. Five students, Sherri Correll, Kaye Rogers, Wendy Worley, Joey Jackson, and Shea Lair attended the CKMEA Junior High Select Band. Lee Cave was also selected but was unable to attend. Four students, Pam Bertram, Beverly Mercer, Wanda Reid, and Lee Cave were selected to attend the CKMEA High School Select Band, Wanda Reid attended the Morehead Clinic Band. Solo and Ensemble contest in March found Stanford well represented this year with nearly lOCPjo participation in the High School Band. The Band attended the KMEA Band Contest in Richmond in April. Other activities until the end of the year included the Marching Band competing for a trophy in the May Day Parade in Owin ville, Kentucky. The Stage Band performing in the CKMEA Stage Band Clinic; the Concert Band in Graduation exercises; and the Marching Band in the Dairy Day Parade. As we go marching... We have three games remaining and hope to get above .500 for the season. The starters for the Wildcats this year consists of 1 senior, 1 junior, and 3 sophomores. You can see that we are a young team and most of our reserves are underclassmen. I hate to see our seniors leave but I am looking forward to the years to come also. We were fortunate in receiving an invitation to the C.K.C. Tournament this year. We lost to Paris 79-59 but we were behind by a single point after the first half. I don't feel like the score indicates how the game was really played. Paris won the C.K.C., and we feel better knowing that at least we were defeated by the winner. Remember the giant, fellows? ” We took a road trip this year to Morehead and lost to Breckinridge and Rowan Co. Both of these schools had strong teams. I feel like we gained a considerable amount of valuable experience even though we did lose. The boys seemed like they enjoyed the trip and we are looking forward to another one next year. (Continued next page) With 4 seconds on the clock, Nathan scores the winning points against McKinney. The Bearcats utilizing a time out with 2 seconds to go, failed to score. The victory is obvious as the picture indicates. I think we have had excellent support this year particularly from our local out-of-school fans. Our students supported us to a certain degree but left a lot of room for improvement. 1 hope that beginning this fall in football our pep rallies will improve and that our students will gain spirit. After all, we are one big family in one great school and I think we should stick together for Stanford High School. The caliber of boys participating in athletics determines the amount of support they get. There is no room for smart alects, show offs, bad tempers, bad attitudes, or bad grades in athletics. This means on the court or field, in the classroom and school, or on the street. Think about this fellows and set good examples, it’s just as easy. We drew Casey County in the District Tournament this year and we are looking forward to playing them and more teams after them. I would like also to take this opportunity to say that I have enjoyed working with these boys this year and I don't think any coach could ask for any more cooperation, or any nicer boys to work with. I wish the Seniors the best of luck and hope that we can have the same cooperation and teamwork next year with the boys returning. I would like to thank Coach Leedy for helping this season, and as usual, he has done an excellent job with the B-team. I am very proud of the B-team and I think they will help us considerably next year. Our managers for this season have been Eddie Bowling and Pee Wee Stewart. Thanks, Coach Baird 94 Nathan on defense against Garrard. Steve on rebound. Nathan ft Mercer after the ball. Coach Baird wraps Wilkerson's finger before a practice. Watch your head, 96 boy! McLaren, Advisor I want to take this opportunity to thank the members of the 1972 Wildcat Staff for all they have done to make this yearbook a success. Special thanks are in order for tltose few, who went above and beyond the call of duty when it came to work. The 1972 Wildcat” took its shape slowly but finally blossomed out into this fine yearbook. I am pleased with its content. 1 dedicate this book, to all who helped make it possible. This includes die faculty who were very patient with me when taking pictures the second time; Mrs. Ferguson, for the use of her home; Mr. McCuffey, for being understanding. Thanks to Mrs. Wyler for all of the memo advice. I'm sure there are others that I have failed to mention, but I am indeed grateful for all who played a part in making this book. H. McLaren, Advisor Meeting die deadline? Linda and Chad arc busy at work. We could always depend on diose two to be here and to get the job done.
