CUSS HISTORY OF '49 This year, 1949, is one which has been looked forward to with much enthusiasm by 25 young people. In this year, we shall commence a new life. Many will go to college and continue to specialize, while others will fill business positions. Of our original class, we still have Betty Lou Davis, Billy Beck, Charles Fields, Jane Ann Dozier, Julia Anne Carter, Johnny Baughman, John Franklin Cash, Sammy Rochester, Alberta Lasure, Walter Hester, and Lewis Smith. In the third, we were joined by Ray Oster and Mary Catherine Hall. In the fourth grade, we gained Mayme Hooker and lost “Tiddle” Hester. Robert Langford started in the fifth grade, but didn’t stay more than a few minutes--we lost him in the sixth, but we gained an asset in “Bay” Leedy. Bob Langford just couldn’t stay away from S.H.S. and so he rejoined us in the seventh. Juel Stears journeyed from Danville to increase our class during the eighth grade. By this time we were looking forward to entering high school. In our Freshman year Anita Thompson and Jeff Blackerby became “green” Freshmen along with the rest of us. The ’49ers really increased in our Sophomore year as we gained Agatha Von Gruenigen, Rose Ellen Leigh, and Reva Brown. At this point, we were adding more members to the football and basketball team. As Juniors we struggled along with the aid of Marjorie Sheron and “Tiddle Hester who finally decided he liked us after all. Flash!!!!? ! We became Seniors! This is a thrill that has been experienced by all past classes. At last we were at the head of the classes. Nancy Tremaine joined us from Iowa to graduate with us. Many members of the ’49 class have distinguished themselves by outstanding scholarship or in the sports field. The football team was aided by Johnny Baughman, John Cash, “Tiddle” Hester, Ray Oster, Juel Stears, and Charlie Fields. All of these players received their letters. Three cheerleaders who were electedfromthe Senior Class, Betty Lou Davis, Anita Thompson, and Jane Ann Dozier, have done a fine job. Also Betty Lou was elected President of the Pep Club. Our class officers were elected and Sammy Rochester was chosen President. True assets to this year’s basketball team were Billy Beck, Johnny Baughman, Sammy Rochester, and Charlie Fields. Many have been honored through musical ability as were “Bay” Leedy, Ray Oster, and Rose Ellen Leigh. As we leave S.H.S. we hope to be remembered by the Faculty and student body as an “all-round honor class. 9
