FOREWORD This year's class will be fhe fhirfiefh fo complefe fhe fwo- year program of fhe Graduafe School of Business and be awarded fhe M. B. A. degree. If will also be fhe fwenfy-fiffh class for which if has been my honor fo sign diplomas: moreover, if will be fhe lasf class for which l shall have fhis privilege - in ofher words, I also graduafe wifh fhis very fine group of M. B. A. and Ph. D. candi- dafes. Togefher we leave Sfanford, and commence a new pro- gram of life! However, commencemenf for you means 'rhe beginning of a business or professional career, wifh many years of safisfying ac- complishmenfs ahead. ln varying degrees you will experience ma- ferial success, buf each of you musf choose for himself fhe exfenf fo which he will also realize fhaf fype of success which comes nof from fhe accumulafion of money, buf from rendering service fo fellow-workers, fo employees, fo his communify, and fo fhe nafion. Our economy musf have men and women like all of you 'ro keep if dynamic. And whaf is fhis dynamic economy? According fo fhe recenf Census of Business, fhere are more fhan 4,000,000 business enferprises in fhe Unifed Sfafes. ln addifion, fhere are in excess of 6,000,000 individual farmers, and some 3,000,000 profes- sional people ldocfors, lawyers, denfisfs, archifecfs, engineers, ac- counfanfs, efc.l - more fhan I3,000,000 places where new ideas can arise, new mefhods can be fried ouf, and innovafions made possible year affer year. In fhe Unifed Sfafes approximafely one ouf of every five gainfully-employed persons is self-employed. Each one of 'rhese can fire his boss lfhaf is, himselfl any fime he pleases, and go fo work for someone else - fhere are millions of ofhers fo work for. Ours is fhe mosf dynamic economy in fhe world. Thaf, my young friends, is fhe world info which you are enfer- ing. If is a feeming, busfling world, calling for frained people nof afraid fo work, buf a world offering rewards almosf beyond human comprehension. We wish you success, nof alone in ferms of maferial fhings, buf also in ferms of good living and unselfish service. We are proud of you, we shall wafch your progress wifh greaf inferesf, and we shall rejoice in fhe successes fhaf fhe years bring you. May life be kind fo you all. -J.H.J.
