The small squad consisted of junior Chris Terry, sophomore Toni Miller, freshmen Michelle Bradley and Timmie Bailey. 40 41 GIRLS BASKETBALL This year, the girls basketball team had an exciting season. Some of the highlights of the year included beating the Pilot Rock Rockets in triple overtime and stomping the state ranked Vikings at home. Their coach, Kelly Williams and assistant coach Jane Eggelston did a fine job, they have a lot to be proud of. Although they were a young team that didn't stop them from being tough competitors. The girls are going to be back next year stronger than ever. TEAM PICTURE BELOW From left to right. The record books were rewritten this year as our basketball team posted an 18 win and 4 loss season. Being just two games short of a perfect regular season, the Tigers went to the district tournament in Pendleton the heavy favorite. In Pendleton the Tigers were upset by Wasco County but came back to beat Pilot Rock for the third time this year, and qualify for the regional tournament in La Grande. There they lost by a single point to Grant Union High School. We are mighty proud of this team for their determination and dedication toward proving how great it is to be a Tiger. The spirit for this years basketball teams was boosted by the enthusiastic varsity rally squad. They were trapped out in a pair of powder-puff shakers and a smile, hand-in-hand with a formula for fun. The Tiger cheerleaders pleased fans and fellow tiger's this season during home and away events. At each game the stands were alive with backers eager to cheer the Tigers on win or lose. This year we had six varsity cheerleaders, Toni Miller, Jean Wright, Susan Carlson, Michelle Bradley, Julie Clarke, and Heather Raines. There were also two J.V. cheerleaders, Connie Kelly and Michelle Ettinger This years cheerleaders were joined by three boys. Dan Pfel, Raymond Bradley, and Joe Lemmon. 46 BASEBALL The crack of the bat and the call of the umpire brought on a promising baseball season for the Tigers. The team started the season strong but ended up with a dissappointing 7 wins, 14 loses record. Dispite the season record, the Tigers displayed many promising talents on the field and learned the importance of working together as a team. The roster consisted mostly of sophomores, which speaks for the potential of this team in the years to come. - ' • 48 49 This year tennis team did a fine job of Maying ahead of the other school in the league. The season was highlighted with a new coach. Mrs. Newman, and an exchange student. Oliver Bertschinger Oliver proved to be a positive addition to our team by placing first in district and competing in the state tournament Being the best is one thing. said one of the players, but working together as a team it the most important thing of all. Although the team faced some upsets this year, they would raise their heads up and prepare for the upcoming matches The team (pictured below) consisted of. from left to right Lanna Bee ken. Ed Martinet. Sheral Davis, Oliver Bertschinger. Lindy Porfily, Coach Newman. Vincent Davis. Jean Wright, and Alma Chavei 50 Although the participants were few, the quality was high as this years track team took action. Of the five spikers that turned out, two of them, Janet Proebstel and Javier Alarcon, qualified for the state meet. The team (pictured above) consisted of Javier Alarcon, Heather Hummell, Janet Proebstel, Darrin Collins-worth, Coach Kenna Punches, and their manager. Michelle Bradley. Not Pictured are Cammie Earle and Coach Art Derbyshire. NEBS It wouldn't be right to look back on the 1984-85 school year without providing some recognition to the students that make our school an outstanding academic institution. This was done at our annual awards banquet night. Awards were given in the areas of academics , skills contest, and spring sports. Some of the awards that were given included the Oregon Scholar award, to Heidi Snodgrass, the Attendance award, given to Phillip Marcum, and the Outstanding Senior Athlete award, given to Jed Hummell. Other recognition went to Jeff Walker and Rachel Smith, for the boys and girls Citizenship Leadership award. Heidi Snodgrass was the senior Valedictorian, with Wes Marcum being the class Salutatorian. The National Scholar Athlete awards were given to Randy Cooper and Rachel Smith. 52 STUDENT LIFE This years Freshman were treated to a warm welcome by participating in our annual slave auction. The bidding was fierce as the slaves were up for hire. The fun continued on into the next day when we all witnessed the humble servants fulfilling the wishes of their masters. It sure is great to be a Tiger. WELCOME ABOARD FRESHMAN. SLAVE AUCTION 54 SPIRIT Every Fall there is a certain magic in the air that has strange effects on those beloved Stanfield Tigers. It is marked on the calendar as being Spirit Week , but it might be more appropriately named Let's Get Ugly Week! In anticipation of our traditional homecoming football game, there are special activities planned throughout the week. We had such things as Cowboys and Indians day, Nerd Day , and of course Blue and Gold day. Other events included the noise parade, the bonfire, and class competition. A N1 r M 1 This years carnival proved to be a big success for our whole school. Some of the more popular booths were the ring toss, the balloon booth and bingo. The highlight of the evening was the waterbed giveaway, which was sponsored by the student council. Another highlight was the crowning of the queen. Pictured left to right: Freshman Queen: Julie Clarke, Escort: Dusty Grogan, Junior Princess: Hilda Mora, Escort: Vincent Davis, Senior Princess: Rachael Smith, Escort: Steve Porter, and Sophomore Princess: Susan Carlson, Escort: Brent Morris. S6 DANCES Our school has had a lot of fun activities and some of these activities were our school dances. Just to give the girls a chance to ask the boys we had a Sadies Hawkin Dance. One of the biggest and most fun was the prom. It was held in April. We also had a Sweethearts Dance in February, just for the sweethearts of our school. 59 The people- Your life here at SHS is an important part of our striving to be the best. Your desires and accomplishments, molded with those of others around you, make the mountain seem smaller, the top not so far. The school's dreams can only be set as high as the student's dreams. If your goal is not to reach the top of the mountain, then it is likely that the school won't either. In 1985, we plan to reach the top of that mountain, moving everything aside that gets in our way. If you're having trouble seeing your goal, then maybe you should ask yourself the same question we've challenged the whole student body with - WHY NOT THE BEST? There's no reason - just GO FOR IT!!!!! 60 61 The many faces of Stanfield High School are exclusive and unique in their own ways. Whether they be students; seniors, juniors, sophomore, or freshman. Administration or faculty, male or female, individual or threesome, everyone collaborates to form SHS's sole identity. Certain faces dictate a definite authority, others show a clear-cut expression of failure after trying so desperately to win. While others try to succeed, some stand back and laugh and sneer, but only the ones who try have the chance to win. There always exists those faces that cover themselves and try to hide their true feelings of inner self or create a face of their suppressed desire. 62 CAND IDS 63 TIGER STANDOUTS Stanfield High School is proud to continue its tradition of outstanding achievement, both academically and athletically. As we look back on the 1984-1985 school year there are some names and faces that deserve recognition for their personal accomplishments. We are privileged to have one of the top cowboys in the country in our school. Ward Bertch, (pictured below), placed fourth in the state calf roping competition in 1984. This qualified him for the National High School Rodeo Finals in Rapid City, South Dakota, where he placed twenty fifth in the finals. Ward was recognized as being the Rookie All-Around Champion in the state in 1983. There were numerous academic awards, honors, and scholarships that were presented at our annual awards banquet this year. Heidi Snodgrass, our senior class valedictorian, was awarded the EOSC Presidential Campaign for Excellence Scholarship as well as other honors. Wes Marcum received the Northland College Scholarship and Trustee Grant, was the class Salutatorian and was chosen to be Stanfield High Schools' Student of the Year . Shawn MacPherson, our student body president, received an academic scholarship from Whitman College. Other Tiger Standouts included Javier Alarcon for placing second in the state in the 800 meters, Howard Wagoner, All-league baseball pick, Shawn MacPherson and Jed Hummell, All-league basketball picks with Jed being an all league football pick as well, and Randy Cooper, recipient of the Platt Sportsmanship award. Oliver Berts-chinger, our exchange student from Switzerland, was the district tennis champion and placed high in the state competition before having to leave for graduation ceremonies in Stanfield. The list goes on and we are proud of the many outstanding students that have made Stanfield High School a name that is known around the state for its academic and athletic achievements. Stanfield held its 75th anniversary celebration on May 10th, 11th, and 12th. There were a lot of exciting activities going on during those three days. At the junior high there was a flea market and booths that some of the high school kids had set up for the little kids. There was also a streetdance held Saturday night for the young people of our town. During the day of i the 11th, there was a parade, baseball game, craft fair, go cart rides, and other special events, i Some other special attractions included authentic Indian teepees that were set up at the elementary school. Seventy five years have past and Stanfield is still giving and growing towards being the best! ONE MORE NIGHT One of the most unique proms ever to be put on by the junior class took place this year at the Stanfield elementary school. The theme was One More Night and the decorations were nothing less than first class. The juniors even went so far as to hire a live band for the celebration. Everybody enjoyed themselves as they rocked the night away in the romantic candlelight atmosphere and city lights decorations. After looking back on their short years at SHS, the seniors were entitled to at least one more night of fun and friendhip. 67 CHANGING LIVES To laugh often and love much; to earn the respect of intelligent people and the affection of children; to earn the appreciation of honest critics and endure the betrayal of false friends; to appreciate beauty; to find the best in others; to give one’s self; to leave the world a bit better, whether by a healthy child, a garden patch, or a redeemed social condition; to have played and laughed with enthusiasm and seeing with exultation; to know even one life has breathed easier because you have lived - this is to have success. 69 Stanfield High School would like to give a big welcome to our new superintendent, Richard L. Laugh-lin. Mr. Laughlin was born in Pendleton, Oregon, He graduated from Estacada, Oregon in 1952, Portland State University in 1958. Oregon State University in 1963, and the University of Wyoming in 1973. He has been teaching fro 26 years. Some of his hobbies are: reading, research, chess, and antiques. Some favorite sports of his are: football, basketball, baseball, track, golf, and wrestling. His other administrative jobs include: principal at Toledo and Siletz, and superintendent for Crook County scnool district. His favorite things about the field of education are all the young adults, their activities, and achievements.
