As graduates of Stamford High School you have not only the task but the obligation to continue to seize every opportunity to develop our potential to the fullest while you are in the spring of your life. Do not wait as Albert Camus did to find your invincible summer within yourself in the midst ofwinter. Your invincible summer is your integrity and courage nurtured by faith in yourselves to master your own destiny. Remember, our posterity depends on your creative and prophetic responses to the demands of the future. You have worked and waited for graduation. Sometimes you have been frustrated and angry, and, at other times, you have felt enthusiastic and satisfied. These experiences are much like the experi- ences you will encounter in the world you are entering, and success in higher education and the work world requires the same characteristics you found necessary in achieving success at Stamford High School. Setting goals, both short term and long range, working towards these goals and knowing when to move on and reset goals is invaluable in living. Listening and hearing what people are saying puts you in the driver's seat. Knowing what others know and how they feel about what they know helps you deal with difficult situations. One last word, when in doubt, communicate. Com- munication is your single most powerful tool. Use it! Learn to use communication, both written and oral, to your advantage. Congratulations and the best of luck to each of you. Thomas F. Reardon, Ed.D. Board of Education. First row, Salvatore Signore, Sarah L. Silveira, Rodney Varney, Otto Calder. Second row: Dr. Anne S. Lady Lupold he fitter The first class on Sir Harold's schedule was lo- cated in the third tower. He climbed the winding staircase to the distant clamor of bells and found himself in a room surrounded by pieces of artwork. Squire Preu, head of the Art Department, took his arm and showed him the different classes. Sir Harold saw knights working at ceramics, jewelry- making, and drawing and painting. Oh my, thought Sir Harold as he rested in one ofthe classes. He turned to the figure beside him, a lovely young maiden, and struck up a conversa- tion. Minutes later, a young lad came at the fair maiden with a chisel and hammer and began to chip away at her skin. Unhand that fair maiden! cried Sir Harold. But Sir, returned the lad, she's only a statue . . . Sir I-larold's Education had just begun . .. M, 49 2 'F izturizxns Sir Harold's next class was in the first tower where he was greeted by the jovial Squire Kovacs. As they walked down the corridor, he showed Sir Harold a variety of classes. They passed by knights who were studying Ancient and Medieval History, Law and justice, and European History. Here is your class, quoth Squire Kovacs. Sir Harold entered the large history room, and was handed a book. He was directed to read the first chapter. However, he just could not resist glanc- ing through the pages and reading about the past. Maybe, thought Sir Harold, by learning about the past I can discover what to do about my future. And so he continued to read . . . 50 Bakers X,--1' We ft -i As Sir Harold ventured down the long corridor he was engulfed by a group of knights heading toward a large room. Caught up in the tide of facts, Sir Harold followed them inside and took a seat. The large room with a stage was filled with knights talking among themselves. Pray thee, said Sir Harold to a knight seated beside him What occurreth here today? The knight's reply was stifled by Squire Markosky who quieted the audi- ence and began to speak. We at the castle are very privileged to have someone very special with us to- day. I hope you appreciate those that give their time to come before you to share ideas and experiences with you. Sometimes you can learn more by just listening to other people's points of view. So without further adieu ... The audience applauded and Sir Harold sat upright in his seatand listened attentively . . . 51 2 ztilqemzttirzizrma Sir Harold then ventured across the glass drawbridge into another section of the large castle. He found himself in the sixth tower where Squire Bellantoni led him past rooms where knights were busy working on Geometry, Algebra, Trigonometry, and Calculus. Squire Bellantoni deposited him in a room and handed him a piece of paper with his first problem on it. It read: lf two carriages left the castle at the same time, and one of the carriages had two horses and the other had four, and they both fell into a river and the current was against them, what time would they reach the first hill? Sir Harold sighed, and set to work ... l 52 he glllfinstrelz Sir Harold found his way to his next class and was surrounded by beautiful music. He peeked in the window of the first room and saw knights sitting and singing various tunes. He entered the next room to find knights with instruments leaving the room. He followed them out onto the large grassy field near the castle. Someone handed him a long flag, and as the knights began to march, so did Sir Harold. When they turned unexpectedly towards the left, Sir Harold quickly spun round. His flag stick happened to hit Squire Murphy, the leader of the Min- strels, squarely on the head. Sir Harold bid a hasty retreat . . . 53 12 Qlrzrft,-5111211 When the bell rang, Sir Harold ven- tured down the stairway and found himself in a long corridor. Strange sounds filled the air around him. He peeked into a room and saw a dozen fair maidens stitching various gar- ments. He turned another corner and discovered knights working busily on pieces of wood and metal, forming tables, chairs, working on blueprints of castles and manor houses. Seeing the many knights working away in the metal shop, Sir Harold saw his opportunity to attain a weapon for his threatened village of Dipville and the end of his quest. He seized a long stick of metal and thrust it into the open flame. The sparks flew! The air was filled with tumultuous clamor. Sir Harold withdrew what remained of the stick of metal. Youfve made a nice washer, said a young lad. Gee, said Sir Harold, can you teach me about this? 54 . cz V - ..,, i. 5 i '.,. 2 I Mk ,Nubuk 4 W he Qtiltletes Sir Harold's physical education class was in the other part of the castle. He crossed the connecting drawbridge and ventured down the staircase. He was immediately met with lads and lasses in various stages of dishabille. Someone threw a round ball that hit him directly in the nose and called for him to come and join the game. Sir Harold clomped onto the wooden floor in his armor and looked around helplessly. A shrill whistle assaulted his ears. What class are you in? demanded Squire Hagan, Outdoor Living, Modern Dance Forms, Life-time Sports or Team Sports? Sir Harold stood there speechless. Get out there and play! cried Squire Hagan. Sir Harold, trembling in his armor, caught the round ball that was thrown to him. A young lad standing beside him showed him the proper way to bounce the ball upon the floor. Sir Harold was elated! He bounced the ball thrice around the large wooden room and then out the door into the corridor. He spotted a small room and bounced the ball inside. Shrieks greeted him as fair maidens in their undergarments noticed his appearance in their dressing room. Ye Gads! cried Sir Harold, this IS an education! c-'M N . , gt, After leaving his last class, Sir Harold found himself in the second tower. Squire Scher took his arm and showed him about the class- rooms. Knights were adding figures and scribbling in ledgers. Sir Harold was seated in a classroom and given a list of figures to add. I wonder, thought Sir Harold, how practical would a market place be in a small village? 2 ennrilerzi .x.i'i.'+ Sir Harold climbed to the fifth floor where he was greeted and shown the different rooms. Knights were seen dissecting fetal pigs and examining skeletons in biology, and working experiments in Chemistry and Physics. Squire Killion invited him into his I.P.S. class. The experiment for the day was very dangerous, as they were working with explosive chemicals. Sir Harold watched the demonstration and then rushed to his lab table. Let's see, thought he, me thinks you add thrice the amount of this strange white powder . . . He continued to mutter beneath his breath as he mixed the chemicals and shook them violently. The explosion, it was told later, could be heard all the way up to the third tower. he Sciences . 1 Q' . 4 l, he 1311215 Sir Harold walked to the second tower and met with Squire McGovern who immediately passed by Survey, Themes, En- glish 9-1, and placed him in A.P. Returning as captain, senior Matt Diot, along with the brother combination of Rosario and joe Mallozzi and junior Mark MacDougall, accounted for a major part of the team's scoring totalling over a hundred points. Senior goalie Bruce Scutti kept Stamford in many games by doing an outstanding job in the nets. Sitting: Mr. Pociadlo and Miss Kenna - Class Advisors. To The Class of 1981: Looking back atthe four years we've shared, the many things we've done and the places we've been, l realize how the variety of all your moods, interests, ideas, abilities, backgrounds and feelings have contributed to the character of Stamford High School. From stacking many cases ofchips four claim to famel to cutting dozens of bagels -there wasn't a day we didn't work together. Working together, each of you, in your own unique way, contributed to what has become the Class of 1981 . Let us hope that our example of what hard work can achieve will rekindle a desire in future classes to work together as we have done. This work was our love for each other made visible. You made it easy for me to know you and appreciate what you are, and your honesty made me feel closer to you. Our interaction reminded me of the importance of my profession, and I am very proud to have been your class advisor. As we go our separate ways at graduation, we should not feel sad, because the togetherness we shared will become more meaningful in its absence. The depth of love is not experienced until the hour of separation.
