2. . ,smug f':,'7 ,f ff I f PATRICIA STANKARD This yearbook is dedicated to our class- mates and Within any social group there are al- ways some individuals who contribute the inspiration of their courage to the group's standards. They complement all human striving. Their example serves as a limit- less reservoir for hope. Among us, during the past three years, have been three such fine individualsg Michael Friedman, Thomas Meath and Patricia Stankard. These words from Robert Frost's poem Reluctance seem to us to articulate the accomplishment of these three individ uals Humankind grows better than itself and achieves higher levels of civilization when it controls the drift of things when it makes its own destiny The exer tion of such a control the stubborn and courageous refusal to submit to the af flictions and illchance life brings re quires strong attributes of character There must be the patience to endure and to work for the gradual maturing of one s capabilities There must be a sense of humor to enable the individual to relax from the tensions of his effort that he may return to the effort refreshed And most of all there must be in Albert Schweitzer s phrase a deep and abiding reverence for life that is a heartfelt appreciation of the vast potentialities to be found in life. All these attributes we have wit- nessed and admired in the three persons to whom we have dedicated this year- book. 5

For many of you these plans call for the laying of a firmer foundation through additional years of education training, - for others the world of work is the immediate and challenging goal ahead, - for a few the plans and goals are not well established, but for all of you the public schools of Stamford have provided opportunities to develop your intellectual horizon, your social and physical well-being, and your habits of work and study.
