S., the magnificent Stamford Bulldogs lived up to pre-season hopes as they out-fought a mighty Brady eleven 26-13 for their second State crown - truly a great achieve- ment! Best of all, harmony and teamwork reigned as the Blue and White obtained the prized crown again. The 1956 State Champions opened the season against the Quanah Indians and notched their 18th consecutive win 46- 12, Next to fall was a scrappy Ballinger Bearcat crew, 53-6. In a return bout from last year, the Bulldogs out-fought a never-say-die Andrews for a 26-13 victory. In the closest game of the year, the Bulldogs tenaciously maintained their winning skein with a 7-6 win over a powerful AAA foe, Sweetwater. Coleman became victim number 22 by grace of a 40-6 shellacking by the Blue and White. A terrific game with the Brownwood Lions T RI-CAFTA INS Without the fine leadership of three of the most out- standing tri-captains in Texas, the Stamford Bulldogs might never have realized such a victorious season. Dallas Chris- tian got honorable mention 'on the All-State team, while Mike McClellan and Dale Robinson landed a place on the first team. gave Stamford fans a thrill as the mighty Bulldogs smashed their way to a 19-7 decision. An old rival, Anson, fell before the steam-rolling Stamford lads 40-0 for district victory number one. I.n a non- district conference tilt with Nocona, Coach Wood's reserves saw much action as they romped over and through the lightweight Indians for a 60- 12 win. The Hamlin Pied Pipers toppled before a hungry Stamford crew 26-6, as reserves again saw mud action. In the district showdown ,newcomer Seymour was bombed 47-0 for the Blue and White's 27th con- secutive victory and their fourth district crown in the past six years. First to fall in the Bulldogs' playoff path to glory were the Perryton Rangers 27-0 on a cold day in Childress. Pitted against a tremendous line, Coach Wood's stalwart charges not only met the challenge, but also came out as one of the finest lines in the state. Returning to Childress the following week, TRAINER Sterling Carmon, the outstanding trainer for the Stamford Bulldogs, was everywhere at once doing his part in making a State Championship team ! Pictured above is the coaching staff of the Stamford Bulldogs - one of the finest staffs in the U. S They are, left to right: jr. High Coach, Bill Anderson, Head Coach, Gordon Wood, Assistant Coaches, Larry Wartes and O. M. Isbell. the awesome Bulldogs humbled the Pride of the Plains, the Canyon Eagles, 48- 12 for their second consecutive regional cromm and their 29th consecu- tive win. Gaining momentum, the Stamford brigade lowered the boom on a fine Crane eleven, 39-6 in San Angelo. On a great day for Stamford, mighty Terrell, conqueror of the Bulldogs in 1953, was com- pletely routed by the dynamic defense and irresisti- ble offense of the Blue and White to the pretty tune of 39-7. In a fitting climax to a great year, Stamford fought its hardest battle inAbi1ene against the aerial- minded Brady Bulldogs. It was nip and tuck all the way, with the Stamford boys coming hom behind a seven point deficit and notching their 32nd consecu- tive win and second consecutive State AA Crovxm. Not only did they set a new class AA record in wins, but they also obtained the honor of becoming the first AA team to win the title twice. Playing to- gether like a true team all the way and conducting themselves like Christian gentlemen, the Stamford Bulldogs proved to be worthy of Stamford's praises and confidence. This is the never-to-be-forgotten '56 season of the Stamford Bulldogs. Long will it live in the hearts of many! B TEAM Playing ex citin g West Texas type football all the way, Coach Larry Wartes' B team had a good season record of five Wins and three losses. Heavily outweighed and outmanned, but not outplayed, by every opponent, the Stamford lads showed promise of becoming a traditionally fine Bulldog A team next year. ln the season opener, the Blue and White dropped a close one to a very fine Bronte team, 6 to O. Facing one of the toughest class A teams in the area, the Bulldogs lost another close one, 12 to O, to Lockett 's A team. Bouncing back like a true Bulldog crew, they way-laid district foe Seymour's B team 26 to 13, Once again, outweighed and outmanned, the never-say-die Stamford Brigade lost to Class 4A semi-finalists, Wichita Falls B team, 26 to 6. Two quick victories followed next, one over the Hamlin B team 12 to O, and a 1 to O forfeit from injury-riddled Woodson. In one of their finest games, the Bulldogs, by sheer desire and determina- tion, trounced class 4A champion Abilene 's B team 13 to 7. Winding up the season with a bang, Coach Wartes' boys once again smashed Seymour 33 to 20. Some of these game B teamers later in the season had a big hand in winning the state crown. Annual Serving as editor of the annual is both a distinct honor and a responsi- bility. Working, planning, and helping others is extensively rewarding. Since some of the annual staff members adhere to the rule, Never do today what can be put off until tomorrow, much hurrying, scurrying, and worrying is done by staffers as the deadline approaches. Staff It has been only through the per- sistent efforts o f our sp onsor , Mrs. Austin, that we have been able to pro- duce this ye arbook. The staff owes its heartfelt thanks to several who are not listed on the staff, nevertheless, it is through their patience and cooperation that we have been able to put out this yearbook. Mrs. Stokes has helped immensely in the identification of the junior High students, while Mrs. Giles and Mr. Simpson have been very patient with us when we referred to the office files. Mrs. Huffaker has helped with the Write-ups, and Mrs. Warte s has very graciously put up with the noise which emanates from the annual room every day. Because of the many lists and revised write-ups that must be typed, the typists for the annual staff must have ability and patience. Our typists, Judy Campbell, Anita Taylor, and Sue Hardin, have acquired this admirable trait to a high degree. Business Manager,Ierry Williams, and Circulation Mana- ger, jan Olson, were very efficient and businesslike in their handling of the annual's finances. Wanda Childress and Lynnora Rat- liff, Freshman and Sophomore Repre- sentative respectively, have p r o v e d invaluable in doing much of the check- ing and layout work this year, Representatives to the Dog House Council are: First row, left to right: Lynette johnson, Linda Merriot, Nancy Qickenson, Anne Hudson, Elsie Medlin. Mrs. Johnson, charming, intelligent, poised, is always anxious to help dents in any way that she can. the years she has become en- to all at S. H. S. by her warm and her understanding of boys girls. Library We at S. H. S. are indeed proud of our High School Library. During the past year, three sets of encyclopedias and 400 new books have been added. The vertical file, a new feature, has been a great help to the librarians and Mrs. Johnson. The color- ful bulletin boards are designed to attract the attention of the student entering the li- brary. BAND Reorganized in 1948 under its present director, William E. Mayes, the Stamford Bulldog band has become one of the best known hig h school bands in the West Central Texas. Witnessing the inauguration of the State Champion Bulldogs for the second consecutive year was like a dream come true for the members of the band. The band entertained with several adult and student con- c e rts . The annual magazine sale being moderately success- ful, the band made plans to take the traditional spring trip. They visited in Fort Worth last year and attended the Ice Ca- pades. The concert band, composed of sixty members, made plans to enter the warm- up contests at Jacksboro, Sny- der, and Winters and to enter the Interscholastic Contests at Abilene. Membership is based on musical ability and rigid stand- ards of character. ,awp ss 3 f5 '-'-'Q-WSE K K gfggggrt-Lv:-owe -4,4-,.',I6.,g5HtS'4f'Q:if-ji., defray 'fEz:33gyf'-- -- -ff '-' 53 rf: r. gf, : . Pep Squad No season could possibly be compared with the foot- ball session of this year, as far as the Pep Squad is con- cerned. What could be better than to have the football team which the Pep Squad supported so avidly win state championship for the second time? The girls enjoyed the many rides on the old yellow school bus, but the change to the chartered bus, when they went to Dallas was welcome. Tears and laughter were in their voices as the Bulldogs succeeded in winning against the mighty Terrell Tigers. There is no doubt in the minds of the girls that all of the games were as im- portant to them as to the boys. if A highlight late in the season was the election of 1957 cheerleaders and co-leaders. Cheerleaders include Darlene Olson, Chrissie Kendrick, Lilly May Skiles5 co- leaders, Margaret Nauert, Sue Davis, Myron Olson. These we presented at one of the pep rallies in the gymnasium. These girls attempted to show some small part of their appreciation for their football heroes by giving them a well-deserved banquet which held up the tradi- tional standards of the Pep Squad. It was gay and ex- citing, and, as usual, the food was very tasty. Honors, tributes, and gifts, together with an outstanding program, highlighted the affair. We have shown you the instructors who have taught us so much and left us with many memo- riesg we have tried to illustrate past games and mo- ments of glory so that this Bulldog Year may be highlighted in your memories5 we have shown you the friends you acquired in the many organizations and have given you a look at the faces of yotu' class- mates and the extra-curricular life around the cam- pus. We have also portrayed the business men and their businesses who have backed the activities and organizations of the school all the way'. Thus we,the staff close this annual with the hope that we have produced a book worthy of the student body, for we know that in future years these memories will mean much to everyone.
