It consisted of four rooms and had three teachers. By the third year, 500 pupils were enrolled and ten teachers were employed. The rapid growth of the school brought about the need for a larger build- ing. In 1908, a new brick building, consisting of ten rooms and a large auditorium, was completed. Soon, however, the city was again in need of a larger school system. ,A sq. ,529 7' 'U jf' it '334', - ,WY R n ,g gwp 4 . f1,n, f .-.M x' if' I 3 ' - ' My it In 1913 two brick buildings were constructed, one located at Bomar Heights, the other opposite the old high school. The primary and intermediate grades were then transferred to these buildings. After the fire which destroyed the administration build- ing of the Stamford College, the college ground was used for the erect- ion of a high school building. In May of 1922, construction was started. The building, built at a cost of S86,000, was occupied on February 5,l923. On July 7, l9Z8, 565,000 in bonds were voted for the construction of a Manual Trainin 8 Shop, a Home Economics Cottage, land the Reynolds Elementary School. Overcrowded conditions necessitated expansion again in 1939. The Oliver Elementary School, the wing ' 5' A 3 additions to the main building, one for Junior High, the other for high school use, were built at an expense of s9o,ooo, During the past three years, numerous additions have been niade. The Vernon School District was consolidated with the Stamford District during this same year and the Vernon Building was moved to Stam- ford, lt was brick sided and used for the f' t ' ' irs grade. Besides being our counselor and friend, you have guided and trained us in algebra, geometry, and speech. Almost every year you have beena class sponsor. In spite of these many duties you have found time to sponsor the annuals for the past four years. lt has been due largely to your careful guidance that each year the annual has expanded. But your service to young people does not end at school. You are an energetic leader in the young peop1e's department of the Baptist Church. As head of the young people's department you have endeavored to show by word and by example the true Christian spirit. Because of your service to us, the students of Stamford High School, because of your efforts to guide us mentally, morally, and culturally, be- cause we love you, Mrs. Austin, we happily and thankfully dedicate to you this volume of THE BULLDOG - 1950. Remember the days gone byg Yes, we-'ll remember, both you and I. The Class of '50 Will always cherish The memory of each High school activity. Navy and white Carnation Success comes in CANSQ Failure in CAN'TS. To you we're loyal. Tho' we may wander, Our treasured memories Will all grow fonder. Remember the days gone by Yes, we'll remember, both you and I. Senior Class of 1950 The history of the Senior Class of 1950 begins with the eighth grade. Due to the conversion of the publi school system to twelve grades, instead of the former eleven, the class was necessarily small. The eight grade class was composed largely of students who failed the previous year and students who moved toStam ford to attend school. Members of this original clas s include cl Jan Raney, Nan Raney, Norma Coleman Jackie Berry, Joann Bohannon, Geneva Portwood, Bill Gregory, Bert Goodyear. The first addition to th: class came in the fall of 1945. D o l o r e s Kendrick moved to Stamford from Sweetwater and enrolled in th' class. When enrollment time arrived the following fall, two new s tudents were present, James Hall am Wanda Dalrymple. No permanent additions were made until the 1949 term. This year has brought four nev class members to us. Carolyn Nunnallee and Beulah Markhart enrolled on the opening day: BarbaraTurne: joined the class at the end of the second six weeksg and Barbara Bryant joined the class just in time to orde: invitations. So the Class of '50 has withstood time and storm, and still it has fifteen surviving members. On the class day p r og r am the class of '50 called upon Moe-the Swami to foretell the position tha each person in the class would occupy in life in the year 1980. This is his prophecy. Jackie Berry has been shipped to England to earn her living by trying to make the King laugh. She is an eminent success. Jo Am Bohannon is enjoying her ranch home but admits that a man might make jobs easier around the old home- stead. Barbara Bryant was hard to locate but afte r tuning into the ever-famous hit parade we hear her a: auctioneer for Lucky Strike Company. Norma Coleman is kept busy housekeeping in the forty-eight roon penthouse that she and her millionaire husband occupy. We see Wanda Dalrymple in a dr e s s shop buying 4 wedding gown. After thirty years she finally talked Melvin into it. Bert Goodyear is now conductor of thi Philadelphia Symphony. He doesn't have to work but two hour s a week with an income of forty thousanf dollars. Bill Gregory is now assistant superintendent of the Rule-Jayton Cotton Oil Mill. James Hall is nox Jones County Agricultural Agent. Dolores Kendrick is the ope r ato r of the Bell Telephone Company tha always gives you the wrong number. Beulah Markhart is the cause of the over c r owde d conditions of th' hospitals. With a nurse like that who wouldn't like to be sick. Carolyn Nunnallee reports that she got her ful aim out of college. After four years of hard struggling she finally talked a rich man into marrying her, bu even his money couldn't make her lose weight. G ene va Portwood now owns an Ice Cream Parlor in Rule Jan and Nan Raney were the Toni-twins of the month. Barbara Turner, after thirty years, is still trying ti learn to play third base. 5 v, Q4 wise-'Z-n 1' Q J- ' SiEN'KQ3fR To . The members of the Class of '50 feel that the four years they have spent in Stamford High School have been made more pleasant and interesting by the students who attended this school with them. To show this appreciation each member has left s ome remembrance to one of his fellow students. Jackie Berry leaves her small figure and cute laugh to Edith Foster. Joann Bohannon leaves her ability to leave school at three o'clock to Carolyn Sitton. Barbara Bryant leaves her quiet ways to Anna Ruth Smith. Norma Coleman leaves her ability to go with a Kelley to Pat Vaden. Wanda Dalrymple leaves her ability to go with a college boy to anyone that lucky. Bill Gregory leaves hi s ability to be friendly to Herman Hatfield. Bert Goodyear leaves his ability to get out of class to Jerry Lindsey. Beulah Markhart leaves her ability to make A's in American History to Don Prewit. James Hall leaves his short legs to Royce Fuqua. Dolores Kendr ick leaves her ability to make speeches to Joan Walton. Carolyn Nunnallee leaves her loud mouth and cute figure to Clara Beth Ivy. Geneva Portwood leaves her ability to go with a Rule boy to Wanda Johnson. Jan Raney isn't going to leave anything. She's taking Bill with her. Nan Raney leaves her ability to be called sister to Sis Lemons. Barbara Turner leaves her ability to sit on the c ampus with her number one boyfriend to Diana Chandler. 1'27flifiE+32ZCZ 63515111 jfmjvtff 451-1-J7,e.evV 95253 AU 3H09iTND smmzawmsm Hwclalx 7?ZvM?f4Mf Wi imszmnwsm i dig W due-f I' u .MUD t fs JL gm ibm TTP K X in mmf: N 1- 1 tba V .
