Text from Pages 1 - 88 of the 1960 volume:

foreword School is like a cadet ship, training us for voyages on the sea of life. It is also run like a ship, each person doing his share to insure smooth sailing. With these things in mind, the staff of the Voice '60 has chosen a nautical theme. __ Dedication We, the staff of the 1960 VOICE, are proud to dedicate this yearbook to Mrs. Florence Kaufmann, teacher, counselor, friend. In her years at SCS, Mrs. Kaufmann has given willingly of her time and talents to the whole of the school. She has been a major force in guiding many lives to their purposes. Students from elementary grades, Junior High School and remedial reading will remember Mrs. Kaufmann as a fine teacher. Mrs. Kaufmann is a prominent member of our community, too. She is a member and ruling elder of the First Presbyterian Church of Stamford. A member of the D. A. R., she is an area Regent. Mrs. Kaufmann was Presi- dent of the Stamford Teacher's Association and a member of various student committees. And so, to you Mrs. Kaufmann, on the eve of your retirement, we extend our greatest gratitude for all you have done for the students and faculty of Stam- ford Central School. We hope that in this way we can pay a portion of the debt we owe you. ADMINISTRATION Supervising Principal ZUe Captain ami His Crew For landlubbers, the idea of ships and sailing is a theme to stir the imagination. One can think of the Voice as an untried craft and its production as a voyage to be guided by its crew, the Staff. One gets ink- lings that the sailing has not always been smooth; occasionally heavy seas have pound - ed the decks, but so far no crewmen have washed overboard. We hope some useful seamanship has been developed on the part of the crew members which they can take on a future cruise. At last information, it appeared that the ship was on course and would make port. FRONT ROW, left to right: Dr. William A. Greene, Erich Theile. President; Melvin Carpenter. District Superintendent. At the time of this writ- ing Stamford has played 11 games of its 16 game schedule. So far we have won 7 while dropping 4. This years Varsity is one with experience, as each of the first five has had at least one previous year of Varsity experi- ence. This year's starter? are Roger Sheehy, Dick Bassani, Pete Banta, Rod Mulford and Ted Eighmie. They are ably backed up by Gordie Faulkner, Harry Simonson. Dave Taylor, Howdy Watson, Larry Soule, and Joe Peck. This is the final for five Seniors: Roger Sheehy, Pete Banta, Ted Eighmie, Hotfdy Watson and Harry Simonson. This year Stamford has won once over Davenport, Treadwell, Andes, Grand Gorge, Roxbury, and twice over Margaretville. Our losses have come once each at the hands of Downsville and Gilboa and twice to South Kortright. In closing we want to wish next year's team the best of luck. This year's J. V.'s have had a rough te matching the record passed by the Varsity. This year the team lack :ight and experience. The team has lost once to Downsville, Marg ville, Davenport. Treadwell, Andes, Gilboa and Roxbury. and twice to a strong South Kortright J. V. team. Stamford has defeated Margaretville and Grand Gorge once. We want to wish next year's J. V.'s a much more successful season which we feel they will have with more experience on the basketball court. Zo Our Qoals FRONT ROW, left to right: J. Hall, K. Davies, G. Churchill. R. Sheehy, G. Sitts, H. Simonson, G. Faulkner, T. Beers, G. Roe. SECOND ROW: A. Mauboussin, G. Wilson, P. Banta, P. Churchill, B. Gaeta, R. Mulford. THIRD ROW: Coach Sanders, L. Soules, T. Eighmie, L. Hillis, D. Bassani, P. Petrishen, L. Johns, P. Banta, D. Taylor, K. Smith, H. Watson. In 1959 Stamford's soccer team was forced to take second place behind a strong South Kortright team. Stamford's defensive and offensive units were both strong and defeated all but one opponent. Many newcomers to the team entered the Indian line-up and look promising for the future. Next year's team will feel the loss of Bill Gaeta, Roger Sheehy, Pete Banta, Leon Johns, Howard Watson, Ted Eighmie, Paul Petrishen. and Harry Simonson. We hope that next year S.C. S. again will have a fine soccer squad. Our congratulations to Coach Sanders for his work in again producing a soccer team of which Stam- ford can be proud. SECOND ROW: Coach Sanders, G. Haas, B. Gaeta, T. Laux, R. Mulford, J. Harwood. P. Banta. Stamford's baseball team of 1959 proved to be very successful. The boys won the League Champion- ship for the fourth year in a row. The team won all but one of its League games and dropped only one non-league game to Delhi. The big game of the season was the final one with South Kortright. This game decided the cham- pionship. Stamford won a very exciting and hard-fought game by a score of 2-1. This year's team lost seniors, Stan Beers. Tom Laux, and Jim Harwood. At this time we are sure that in 1960 Stamford will also have another fine team. Congratulations to Coach Sanders for his fine work in again leading the team to the championship.
