PRINCIPAES MESSAGE Congratulations to another yearbook staff for having completed its many tasks and having met its various deadlines! There was a time for your labours, and now comes the time to enjoy the fruits of those labours. A major purpose of a yearbook is to provide the record with which associations and exper- iences are lived again in recollection. Hence, as you the students turn the pages of this book, there will be many of you who will have memories of time well spent, but others will be reminded of wasted hours. Time lost can- not be recovered, but we may take the lesson to plan that hours yet to come may be used wisely. For there's a time to get and a time to keep but never enough time to waste. 26 ' fit L Sefrelary GRACE DAVENPORT MR. The Indians defeated every team they played until they encountered their arch rivals, Grand Gorge. In an exciting game, S.C.S. came from six points behind to end the game in a tie. Stamford continued their glorious season by winning every other game they played, Then, with a sectional trophy in sight, they defeated Cobleskill in a game played at Middleburg, and Margaretville in another play-off at Roxbury. The proud Indians journeyed to Cincinnatus to play Truxton for the section four championship. The teams proved to be evenly matched and the regular game ended in a tie. Then, with the score still tied at the end of the usual two overtime periods, the decision was awarded to Stamford on the basis of an edge in the number of corner kicks. This is the first soccer trophy the school has ever won. Members of the championship team included: Forwards: jim Utter, Larry Schwartz and Fritz Felber. Wings: Bill Partridge, and Don Jacobs. Halfbacks: Don Taylor, Richard Gorton, and Zack LeRoy. Fullbacks: Tom Wickham, Guy Truesdell, and goalie, Fred Dunham. Substitutes were as follows: Wallace Champlain, Frank All, Tom Laux. Dennis Moore, jeon johns, Richard VanVliet, Stanley Beers, Peter Banta, Louis Sheehy. jim Harwood. Leon Churchill, james Cahill. Although the team will lose five first-string players next year, Coach Sanders has many willing and able boys who. he hopes. will be able to make a good showing for Stamford in the coming seasons. 4 IOINI XXICRHAM na one of the key defensne uen tle term rn sorter ll10Llj.,ll the seorehooks dont show him to he outstandlne h1 teammates realrre th xt he helped rmmensely rn keepxng, the numher t et 1l it 1 rnxmmum nt when .1 eood tlel ler md eluteh hrtter wx s neeled on the hisehrl drrmone n wus L realy and xyr At the lveernnrrle of the 1957 soeeer sexson the students of Stun ford f entral Sehool wxll undoubted rel ze the etteet ot losing fue bL1llU1'Pl'OS who drd so mueh un all three mrjor sports to help the lndlans mrlee a good showmg of themselxes Blll PAR l RIDCI ude l Qtlmford n sotter and hrse all Hrs yxell p ated p sses nn soeter lel t mmy 1 goal am B also strengthened the Stam or ne on the hrsleet 1 eours YZ? e 1' DOIN IAYIOR played well clurxng hrs stu rt S C 'S In soecer he was a hard kxekme hrlfhuk xx ho played some fme defense lirskethall savu him at the post posrtron for a year of jayvee and three cf Vzrsrtx Baseball found Don at tx st hrse dome hrs share ot the work These 1re the fue athletes who eontrrhuted much effort tov. 1rd helprng to build 1 better team Thus then rs our salute to them for help mg us through the last four years of sports and particularly Wmnlne Stamford s fxrst soccer trophy COACH SANDERS rs undoubtedly proud to be the coach of the fnst trophy wmnmg soccer team the school has ever had In addmon to A champxonshrp gutter team thns year, Stamford ued for frrst place nn baseball Gr- Q - List ot the departlng semors 15 JIM l VIER who alys ays seemed to be rn the rreht tlaee it the rreht tlme Lonscuent ly he sparked the front lme m soeeer and rdded many pomts to the seorehook for the Indrans UBI was a guard rn basketball and :team scored well adenng more tallxes for the elorv of the turtle and vyhxte In hxsehall he hrt well and drd most of the tatehme He urs also fortunnte enoueh to eo to Cooperstown the All btar eane rn 1955 to re sent hrs team IARRX 5CHXXARlZ known tor hrs vull to um exeelled rn all three mayor sports He played front lrne soeeer all four years was 1 Varsrty eurrd rn has all fer three y rs nd 1 seen at shortstop seeond ha e md on the mound durrng hxsehlll season Hrs speet md hxttlng, ahrlnty mrde hmm 1 eat to his ments 1 tu pllte 1 me rn e All Star game at Cooperstown I , fx . ll yy, , ,s N y .. 1, 'W y 4 I v . The Stamford Indians finished the 1956 baseball season by sharing first place with South Kortright. The SCS nine ended with a record of eight wins and two losses, the exact opposite of last year's record of two wins and eight losses. The season opened with a game played between Stamford and Grand Gorge, the Gremlins winning it eight to six. The Indians then stormed through the rest of the season, chalking up eight victories in succession. The last encounter in the schedule saw Stamford playing a strong South Kortright team. The opponent proved to be even more dangerous than expected and took the game nine to three, forcing the Indians to be content with a first-place tie. During the majority of the season, fans saw jim Utter behind the plate, Don Taylor at first, Larry Schwartz at second, Harold Von Brockdorff playing shortstop and Ray Page covering third. In left field was Tom Wickham, in center, Burl Scutt, and in right, Zack LeRoy. The mound was well represented by Larry Schwartz, Zack LeRoy, Don Jacobs, and Lou Sheehy. Stan Beers, Frank All, Richard Van Vliet, jim Harwood, Tom Laux and Richard Gorton were in reserve much of the season but Coach Sanders gave them all chances ho get some game experience to prepare some of them for the responsibility of filling the uniforms of the four seniors who will be graduated this year. Larry Schwartz represented his team at the All-Star Game in Cooperstown. A look at his out- standing record shows why he was chosen. Besides doing a very fine job of pitching this year, he was a dangerous hitter, getting 22 hits in 10 games for an average of over 500. In view of the fine record set by this year's team, we feel sure that the 1957 baseball squad will also strive to do their best. They will undoubtedly produce a record which will be found acceptable by all baseball fans.
