1542863 Zloofdaf Stambaugh-32, Negaunee-7....The Stambaugh Hilltoppers, 1949 U. P. champions, opened the 1950 season with a stunning 32-7 victory over the Negaunee Miners. A powerful ground attack led by Don Sartorelli, Pat Pennoni, and Pierre Delago was too much for the Miners. The lone Negaunee tally was registered late in the final period against the Stambaugh reserve squad. Line play by Lee Lindstrom and Carl Erickson was outstanding. -.i. ---n-11-1:1 Stambaugh-19, Norway-0......Stopped cold by a determined Norway team in the first half, the Hilltoppers shifted into low gear and ground out an impressive 19-O gridiron victory in the second half of play. The Hilltoppers hammered the Norway line on 70 and 85 yard marches for the first two touchdowns. In the final seconds of play Ronnie Sherwood intercepted a Norway pass and scampered 20 yards to the end zone. -ul Stambaugh-19, Iron Mountain-6..Although Coach Willard Anderson's Hilltoppers uncorked a powerful ground attack led by Pierre Delago, victory was shaped in the forward wall. Stambaugh's battering and hard-hitting lineman turned in a sterling performance. with Don Sartorelli on the injured list, Don Hal- verson filled his shoes and definitely earned his spurs. u11-11 Stambaugh-57, Niagara-0.....The Hilltoppers looked sharp as they trampled Niagara 57-O. Delago and Pennoni ran wild behind the vicious blocking of the line. Most of the scoring was done by the reserves who played the entire second half. u -1 Iron River-14, Stambaugh-l3..With a scant 44 seconds remaining in the game and Iron River now trailing 13-7, Mickey McMahon, Iron River All-State Half-back, passed to Lloyd Bewsher for a fatal touchdown and then kicked the extra point to beat a fighting Stambaugh eleven. Iron River drew first blood when Dati tossed an eight-yard pass to McMahon. Stambaugh evened up the score with Pennoni tossing a pass and Sherwood on the receiving end of it. with one minute to play, Dave Serbinski, star Hilltop tackle, shot out of nowhere, scooped up an Iron River fumble and raced 50 yards to score. After the following kick-off return, Iron River scored on two successive passes, one, a completed pass into the end zone. igi.-uiL-n-ui-1: Stambaugh-45, Kingsford-l4..P1aying the brand of football which has been a tradition for Stambaugh teams, the Hilltoppers rolled over the fighting Flivvers of Kingsford A4 to 14. with Delago battering the line as he did all season and Pennoni and Sartorelli skirting the flanks for tremendous yardage, the Flivvers couldn't get their attack started. Sherwood, Serbinski, and Lindstrom again turned in superb line play. i1 Stambaughf4Q, Ishpeming-0...Stambaugh proved to be too much for the Ishpeming Hematites as they were defeated 40-0. Pat Pennoni scored four touchdowns in the lopsided victory. Delago, Sartorelli, John Erickson, and Pennoni galloped for tremendous yardage. Line play by Serbinski, Sherwood, Meyers and Lindstrom was a big factor in the Hilltop victory. -gg-ii-uiuuniilll
