Class History Gosh! But the September of ‘48 came before we knew it and we found ourselves in our first year of High School. Twenty-one of us proudly answered the Freshman Roll Call, but only eighteen of us were left at the end of the year. We are sorry that the urge to roam took Ola Westmoreland to Liberty High School and that Nell June Brinkley left us to join the ranks of the married. Hayworth Kivett became discouraged and simply “quit.” Then our freshman year had flown by, leaving us with many pleasant memories. We began our second year in High School with Mr. and Mrs. R. W. Isley, the same faculty members who had welcomed us into High School the previous year. This second year we lost three other members of our Class. The persuading darts of Cupid called Doris Golden and Janice Hicks away to marry, and later in the year Nadine Lane followed in their path, but we welcomed a new classmate, Treva Maie Poe. At the beginning of our Junior year, we were greeted by a new group of faculty members, with Mr. E. B. Clayton, Mrs. Bob Daughtridge and a variety of coaches and physics teachers. Mr. Tommy Foust was our coach and physics teacher at the beginning of the year, but at the beginning of the second semester he resigned, and was replaced by Mr. Ed Bost. Mr. Marshall Cox was our coach during the County Basketball Tournament, in which the girls’ team was named runner-up for the championship. Our girls’ team also won the Sportsmanship Trophy, and one member of our Class was named All-County Forward. We wi ll never forget the Junior-Senior Banquet nor waiting excitedly for the arrival of our Class Rings. We lost two more classmates during our Junior year, Bobby Lackey and Carolyn Ferguson, and because of illness, Treva Maie Poe was unable to attend. When we began our Senior year, there were only thirteen members in our Class, but Paul McMasters joined us to make fourteen excited Seniors. We had the pleasure of meeting four new members of the faculty. Mr. Clifford Wagstaff taught us World Geography as well as coaching the boys’ basketball team; Mrs. Kathleen Richardson was our new English teacher; Mr. Paul T. Richardson taught us History, while Miss Margorie Ingram was the new coach of the girls’ basketball team. We enjoyed an educational tour of Asheboro, and a trip to the planetarium at Chapel Hill, which taught us something about astronomy. We chose our graduation cards and invitations and, at long last, we ordered our diplomas. Our Senior Class banquet proved to be just as enjoyable as our previous one. But this last year has slipped quickly by, and no more will we enter the portals of dear old Staley High School as students, but we will leave our memories and will remember part of what we learned there; and, as we venture into the unknown we will feel more secure because of that knowledge. As we leave, we feel that because we have attended Staley High School, we are better fitted and will be more capable to build for ourselves a fuller and better life.
