Many changes and additions have been made since it was new and this keeps it in tip-top condition. The year 1956 saw several changes. The new gym and auditorium was built, increasing greatly the facilities of the school. More changes were made during the summer of 1941. The main office was altered and somewhat enlarged, and a new prin- cipal's office was created. This helped a great deal in order to relieve congestion. Nearly every year something about the school is re- placed or repaired. The senior class of each year usually is the contributor of some appropriate gift for the school, with which it can be remembered, and also to show appreciation of having been students in Stafford High School. A lovely lawn and several beautiful trees form an unusually attractive surrounding for the building. A11 these things, along with several others, make students proud to say they attend at Stafford High. The annual staff of 1942 has refrained from dedica- ting its book to any one person, preferring to make it a re- cord of progress shared equally by each person. But if it is possible to recognize an inanimate object, the staff wishes to salute the Stafford High School building, the home of happiest school days. 2 Administration P, B. Ardrey E, E. Boyd F. W. STUDENT COUNCIL Feeling the need of at greater degree of cooperation among the various activities of Stafford High School, the idea of a Student Council was first conceived in 1956. This organization then functioned under the heading of the Pr1nc1pal's Cabinet. The first Pr1ncipal's Cabinet consisted of four student members and two faculty members to work with Mr. Irwin. The school organizations represented in this first governing body were H1-Y, G. R., WS' Club, and the music organizations. By 1958, representatives were being chosen from each of the three classes, in addition to the former representation. This year the organization has increased to twenty members: senior class--Ruth Boehme, Ted Faleng Junior class--Dotty Jean Kiefer, Jim Christie, sophomore class--T. F, Branaman, Rex Paulsen, F. F. A,--Edward Baar, Bud Metz, S.G,A.A.--Mildred Hayes, Norma Jean Titus, 'S' Club--Howard Soice, Byron Sladeg Alpha Club--Betty McConnaughey, Addie Leah Wise, Hi-Y--Harvey Tretbar, Roy Dunn, Music Club--Norma Hartnett, Ralph Woerten- dyke, G. R.--Vada Newell, Byrd Carey. Mr. Toland, principal, and Miss Spencer served as sponsors. Howard Soice was elected president, and Jerry Evans, secretary and treasurer. However, when Jerry left school at mid-year, Ted Falen was elected to take Jerry's former position. During the year the council changed its title from Princi- pa1's Cabinet to Student Council that it might be affiliated with the Student Council movement, appointed a committee to work on the problem of school parties installed a coke mach- ine in the basement of the building fthe profits to be taken for the sponsoring of school benefitsl. This efficient organ- ization also sponsored the annual of the year, appointed a committee to plan a vocational clinic, and originated the plan of exchanging chapels with the St, John High School. 5 STAFF Editor-1n-chief-- Assistant Editor- Businees Manager- Assistant Busines Typist ----------- Cameraman -------- Senior Activities Reporters -------- Lettering -------- Cartoonists--- -- Faculty Advisor-- s Manager ---- ----Vada Newell -----Ruth Boehme -------Ted Falen -----Byron Slade Louise Boyd Mary -----Bennie Ball ---Mildred Hayes Byrd Garey -Maxine Bartlett Harvey Tretbar Nancy McCune Darlene Bartlett ---Russell Jones Jim Huffman ----Mary Spencer 1942 has been a memorable year for everyone. Most of us woke up to what everything was all about when we became freshmen, so perhaps that's the best place to begin. , We have made our marks in high school history and some of our achievements were pretty good as well as pretty bad. But now 1sn't the time 'to mention the bad ones, so I shall tell you of some of our really great achievements. When we became freshmen, we found ourselves on top in the Jr. High School instead of on the downtrodden bottom. We were looked up to as upper-classmen and we became pretty cocky, naturally, when we found that the farm boys and girls had moved in and made us the biggest class, numbering 100 at the highest point in our high school history. When we moved to the Senior High School everyone thought WHere's where we show those cocky sophomores,U but they d1dn't quite realize just how numerous we really were. We had lost a few of our 100 students somewhere along the way but we made up for it by our achievements. Mac Hargett made the first football team that year. We did our bit for everything. Seven girls and seven boys were chosen by the Juniors to wait on the tables at the Jr. and Sr. banquet, which was almost as good as the one we put on the next year. Our coach, Mr. Boswell, was our sponsor and we had another swell picnic at DeSelms Lake as an end to a memorable year. As Juniors we really went to town. We do feel proud of ourselves when we think of our great production, the junior play, uNew Firesu. Our director, Miss Gardner, coached her first play and also sat in the audience during its presenta- tion. We had one of the largest audiences ever to witness a high school play. Needless to say, it was a marvelous success. The real achievement of the year was the Jr.-Sr. banquet, given in May for the seniors. The theme of the banquet was a southern plantation. The decorations were in pastel shades and the garden, surrounded by a low rock wall, contained a fountain with gold drops of water splashing up over ivy covered rocks. The master and mistress of the plantation, Bob Milton and Naomi Richardson were dressed in southern costumes. The Juniors also decorated the large auditorium and ushered at the baccaulaureate and commencement exercises. Our picnic was held at Elm Mills, where everyone went wading, swimming, or boat riding, and had a wonderful time. Miss Gardner was our sponsor. We wound up our high school career by a really perfect senior year. Ralph Woertendyke was chosen as our president. Our first big event of the year was the senior Christmas chapel. Aided by our sponsors, Mr. Patton and Miss Evans, we presented a dramatization of Dicken's WChr1stmas Caroln. Our senior play, 'Ever Since Even, was attended by one of the biggest crowds ever seen in the high school auditorium. The action of the play was centered around the production of a high school paper. A new southern girl became the belle of the whole school and had all the male portion of the editorial staff as well as the football team at her feet. It took a case of the measles to give the other girls a chance and bring things to the desired climax. Miss Gardner, who by now was an old hand at the game, coached the play. 18 First Row: Second Row: Third Row: Fourth Row: Fifth Row! The boys of the school were first orman- ized early in September by a watermelon feed. At that time they bevan to plan the year's work. These plans were started by the publishing of a monthly paper, nThe Hi-Wireu, devoted to Hi-Y news and stor- ies. During the year the club sponsored a ao to church drive which lasted for a month. In connection with this, a census was taken of all students to de- termine religious preference. The organization also worked jointly with the Girl Reserves. Two coopera- tive undertakings were the Thanksgiving chapel pro- gram and Christmas carollinu, both readily partici- pated in by the students. Concerning work outside of Stafford, Hi-Y representatives attended conferences in Klnaman and Great Bend. All in all it was a successful year, one that provided benefits for the Hi-Y members and for the school and community. Alice Hagerman Cora llargarel Lou Barrow 50 CHEER LEADERS Left to right: Barbara Slade, Mary Louise Boyd, Jimmie Earl Walker, Maxine Bartlett, and Colleen Evans September, 1941, found two veteran cheerleaders ready for duty. These were Barbara Slade, representing the Junior class, and Jimmie Earl Walker, representing the seniors. Soon after the opening of school, Colleen Evans was chosen by the sophomores to work with the upper classmen. As the football season got under way it became apparent that Stafford High School rooters were going to need a larger force of leaders. This led to the choice of two additional helpers, Mary Louise Boyd, a senior, and Maxine Bartlett, a sophomore. Thus for the first time the school had five cheerleaders. New uniforms were also in evidence throughout the 1941-42 sports seasons. Red skirts, white shirts and white sweaters were used by Barbara, Mary Louise, Maxine and Colleen. Jimmie Earl wore white trousers, a white shirt and a white sweater. New eighteen inch megaphones were ordered. These were painted white, with the letters S.H.S. on them in red. During the football and basketball seasons, 'pepn chapels were held before every game. With the aid of the pep band and the student body, the cheerleaders were largely responsible for the success of these meetings. Not only did these people get the student body in the proper frame of mind before the game, but they also decorated the goal posts at the football field. It was rather hard to climb those poles to wrap them, but they did it, and did a nice Job, too. Emphasis was placed on a student section at all football and basketball games. Two divisions were roped off, and only Junior and senior high school students were allowed in this section. Better cheering was the result. Every game found the cheerleaders present, whether many others were there or not. They even attended the out-of-town games. To the cheerleaders, the student body, faculty, and sports fans of S.H.S. are saying, 'Great work, and thanks for a good year.n 51 MUSIC Girls' Glee Club Boys' Glee Club A Cappella Choir 52 BAND ..,.,,,,.W ,, 73 I This year, the Stafford High School band has made more progress than one would think possible for one short year. Mr. Hal Dellinger, new music in- structor, put in his appearance last summer and imme- diately started work to promote orvanization within the group. Soon the band began to take shape. New mem- bers, who had taken lessons during the summer, took their places the first of the school year. It became like a team, everyone working toqether to form a more perfect organization. At the first football game crowds saw the showmanship of the organization. Stunt after stunt brought the band to the people's eye. Now the band was almost at its desired lev- el. But there had to be something to insure, in the eyes of the people, the value of it beyond that of showmanship. It came! The annual mid-winter band concert. The band performed to its utmost. It showed the people that it was versatile, entertaining and above par. Music critics of the town were pleased, and so was the school. Commendable showinas were made in the annual district contest. The band was on the map again. Gommensurate with the progress made in in- strumental muslc, was that of the vocal groups. The a cappella choir presented the Easter cantata, Rise, O Glorious Conqueror.n This was the outstanding achievement in vocal music, but many other successes were attained by the groups during the year. 55 Hoof! Eligibility is determined through an individual point system. Popular sports are basketball, bicycle riding, hiking, and archery. Letters are awarded to the girls who make at least 800 points. Miss Gardner, girls' physical education instructor, sponsored the group. S CLUB The USN Club is Stafford Hign's Athletic Association for boys. Each fall outstanding athletes are Chosen by the athletic department and rewarded by receipt of a large letter NSN, and by membership in this club. Sportsmanship and cooperation are two of the qualities on which the choices are based. Mr. Stukey, football coach, is faculty advisor of the groun. 56 'if xi YM, V A ' wvnfii BASKETBALL The football season this year was not quite per- fect, but the merit of the Trojans should he thoneht of in connection with the quality of the teams played. There was no weak team on the schedule. All but one of the towns played were larger than Stafford. But one thins, rather unusual for a Stafford team, did occur. The Trojans were never outweighed by an opposing team. The Trojans averaned 180 lbs. to the man with a backficld that outweighed the forward wall. This year the Stafford boys, coached by Nano Stu- key, won five games, tied three, and lost two. Hoisington and Great Bend succeeded in downing the Trojans. No one has quite figured what gave Great Bend its inspiration on that fateful night after 3tafford's impressive win over the Hutchinson squad the week before in which the opponents net- ted a negative seven in total yards gained. the Cardinals from Hoisington defeated our team with a squad classed by many as the best in the state. Their backfield was one of the fastest met all year. The three ties were perhaos the hardest For the squad and the fans to tako, for HREF all seemei to be UHWPW which would have been won, but for a few hard breaks wnion entered in. All in all, though, the Trojans had a good foot- ball season and deserve much praise. A good coach plus the good boys, equals a good team. Stafford had both! Different and unique miuht be the terms used to apply to the basketball season this year. Probably the Tro- jans are unrivaled in these two phases. In leapue plav the failed to win a game, but they defeated St. John, in non- league games, each time the two played. The games won and lost angle is not a pretty one to see, but there are other facts that make the scoreboard seem unimportant. The Trojans were judved by league officials as the most superior team, in relationship to the never-give- up spirit. That statement should make all alumni and stu- dents very proud indeed. The Trojan quintet founht to the last second in every dame, trying their best to win. They symbolized courave, strength, and sportsmanship at its best Coach Steve Sharp was new at the start of the school year. But by the time of basketball season, everyone rcnarded him as a staunch member of the faculty and a friend. He tried and the boys tried. Every game was not won, but Stafford sportsmanship was proved. Not many boys will accept the hardness of defeat, and keep on tryinv, rinht up to the end. Not many teams will stick together as this team did. 59 5 I s 40 SENICR ACTIVITIES Irene Allen: Band 2,5,43 Orchestra 2,5,43 Girls' Glee Club 2,5,43 hixed chorus 3,43 G.R. 2,5,4 Junior play 5 Joyce Asher: gigls' Glee Club 5,43 Mixed chorus 43 G.R 4 .9 I Enos Ashfordzband 2,5,4: Orchestra 2,5343 Track 2,53 Football 23 Basketball 23 H1-I 2, 5, 4 3 Holland Ausherman: Band 2,5,43 Orchestra 23 Hi-Y 2,5,4 Edward Baar: Boys' Glee Club 2,43 Mixed chorus 43A Ca- ppella choir 43 Basketball 2,5,43 Hi-Y 2, 5,43 Student Council 43 F.F.A. 2,5,4 Edwin Baar: Boys' Glee Club 2,43 Mixed Chorus 43 Bas- ketball 2,5,43 H1-Y 2,5,43 F.F.A. 2,5,4 Mary Ellen Barnes: Girls' Glee Club 2,5,43 Mixed Cho- rus 5,43 A Cappella Choir 43 Debate 53 S.G.A.A. 2,53 G.R. 2,5,43 Office 4 Margaret Lou Barrow: Girls' Glee Club 2,53 Mixed Cho- rus 23 G.R. 2,5 Bonnie Jean Bartlett: Band 2,53 Girls' Glee Club 5: G.
