THE I9 MAE MCGREGOR Secretary to the Superintendent RY 1- 11 America is God's crucible, the great Melting-Pot where all the races of Europe are melting and reforming! Here you stand, good folk, think I, when I see them at Ellis Island, here you stand in your fifty groups, with your fifty languages and histories and your blood hatreds and rivalries. But you won't be long like that, brothers, for these are the fires of God you've come to-these are the fires of God. A fig for your feuds and vendettas! Germans and Frenchmen, Irishmen and English- men, Jews and Russians-into the cru- cible with you alll God is making the American. The real American has not yet arrived. He is only in the Crucible, I tell you-he will be the fusion of all races, the common superman. --Israel Zangwill, The Melting-Pot. 000000000000 AFFORDONIAN 0 0 OO Senior Class THE I9 He1e we are, at the end of the process. Membership is for life and is based upon excellence in character, scholar- ship, leadership and service. The following people are members of the society: Elbert Fly, Cecil Hornbaker, Richard Donnelly, Helen Beard, Helen Elliott, Pauline Maupin, Harvey Fritzemeier, Helen Smart, Clare Porter. Jllpha Club The Alpha Club is composed of those whose grades include two A's and nothing less than B's. Membership is for six weeks or as long as one's grades remain above B. For the second consecutive year it has won the Twelfth District championship as well as the Wheat Belt League. Our forensic group furnished winners in Oratory and Extemporaneous Speech contests as well as in Debate. Donnelly and Lee represented the school in oratory and each won his contest. This is ably taken care of by the joint effort of the G. R. and Hi-Y Clubs. These organizations carry out a rigid religious program which tends to create and maintain high standards of Christian I living in the school and community. Some of the other projects are the Mother-Daughter, Father-Son banquets, a stand at the Fair, Camp Wood, and district conferences. ik -is Officers Q. R. Hi'-U Christine Fee ....... ....... THE lnsirumenial music Band The Band is in truth ia community organization, being composed of Grade, Junior High, and Senior High School students. It has become the best known of all our music enterprises. About sixty boys have met each morning before school and worked hard to attain the success and reputation which has carried it through many contests. Director Hazen L. Richardson has for the last few years been in charge of all our music activities. He has developed many good musicians and built up a successful depart- ment. His groups have -been outstanding in their competitive achievements. Orchestra The orchestra, like the band, is largely a community group. It has grown steadily until it now has about fifty-five members. The orchestra has been able to uphold the honors of Stafford in contests and is a worthy running mate of the band. It also furnishes us with instrumental soloists who have done honor to Stafford. 090090099999 I9 AFFORDONIAN 0 0 0 v Uocal Music CQirl's Glee Club The Girl's Glee Club .proved their superiority by winning the State Contest at Emporia and the Dodge City Cofntest. Tennis and baseball teams have been able to add several points to the total collected toward the athletic award of the league. The gym classes add opportunity for athletic expression, to the curriculum, for those otherwise left out. Stafford's recor-d was six games won and four games lost, tying for sec- ond fplace in the league. Our gym is a small cracker box affair but the team was able to win on the larger foreign courts. CECIL HORNBAKER, Guard Senior GILBERT SIMS, Forward Sophomore EARL LEE, Forward Senior SAM GRAHAM, Center Junior BARNETT TAYLOR, Guard Junior THE I9 PFYPFSS Baseball and Tennis Baseball and tennis are minor sports in Stafford High School. Practically all of the season's play is confined to a tournament of the six league teams. This is easily played but is an unsatisfactory method of determining the champion. The ex- pense -of carrying out a larger schedule makes such a procedure prohibitive. Kinsley is host to the two tournaments. Last year both were held the same day. It was found that some took part in both tennis and baseball, so this year the tournaments were held separately. oooooooooooo TAFFORDONIAN 0 OO THE I9 0000000000 V H W I K i .
