Their first per- formance this year was at the annual Back-to-School night for the parents of students, Over the years the band has consistently scored superior ratings in com- petition, here and abroad. This ycar's group was a bit smaller, but in their performance it proved not to be a handicap. Mr. jack Lloyd remained as director and Drew Pilant was elected Band President. The band is looking forward to a year full of good music and strong competition. all 13. 'GRM sm' 4 , 1 -- viii: 1593 E121 ..... . k x Y 2 3 ,g wus. dw. 'mtv . 'ri t . --agar.. Back I0 Bayicf Stadium's English Department strived to pre- pare students for college and jobs through its varied program of literature and composition. The dedicated teachers encouraged their stu- dents to improve and increase their basic and advanced skills. Novels, short stories, plays, and poetry made up a great portion of the reading material. Through these works, knowledge of authors and various kinds of literature were ob- tained. By writing themes, poetry, and stories the students gained experience in creating a style of their own. Through class discussions, the students gained confidence in speaking and self-expression. Their ultimate goal- communi- cation. The Prevocational Department at Stadium en- ables students to explore the world of work. They are provided with jobs in the community such as hospitals, stores, and shops. This depart- ment provides individual attention for each stu- dent to be placed in a field on which she or he can best use their talents. 21 Pew and Present Studied Understanding different cultures, life styles, and governments was the center around which the Social Studies Department worked. However, classes in Psychology, Careers, Young Lawyers and Buyer Beware were offered to complete a well-rounded curriculum. These classes not only taught the students a background in his- tory and in social development of the world, but also a knowledge of the past which pro- vided a guide for the future. To accomplish this, students were given a chance to express their opinions and hear the opinions of other students on issues which are pertinent to our society today. 22 LOWER RIGHT: Mr. Dravid L. johnson-Civics, Ancient Rome, U,S. In order to meet this need, the Math- ematics Department has been testing new stu- dents in order to find those with a deficiency. Mr. jarmon, Department Head, stated that the sophomore test scores were considerably higher than those of previous years. Forty-nine percent ofthe new students passed compared to thirty- three percent last year, He added that the test' ing conditions had also improved. The math teachers hoped to maintain the continued rise in test scores by emphasizing basic skills in mathematics. Learning to cook from scratch and sewing clothes for oneself was valuable for those who wanted to express their individuality and save money, A course in Handcrafts taught students how to embroider on all sorts of fabrics. Advisor Robert Daniel summed up the vear's staff by saving that it had a lot of spirit and was willing to try anything to pick up reader interest. Ther added an Arts and Entertainment section to the paper, giving reviews of movies and concerts. This years staff also wrote an Editorial Policy which helped them determine what was publi- shable and what was not. Eric Londgren edited the Wforld first quarter. He commented. I think the paper was high quality all rear long. Even though the staff was small. everybody worked hard and made the Stadium Wtvrld a fine production. But Sta- dium is also fortunate to have three hard-work- ing men making sure things run smoothly. They are Mr. Al Hayes, Mr. John Buffaloe, and Mr, Vern Wheeler, our principals. Their job is not an easy one. They spend much time speak- ing with parents, evaluating teachers and classes, and solving the many problems that face them daily. But despite these time-consuming activities, their doors are always open should any student need their help. We think joy Kawasaki spoke for the majority of Stadium's students when she said, They're great! Mr. Buffaloe and Mr. Wheeler have a new job this year. They use high power Walkie-talkies to keep in touch with each other as they patrol the school and its grounds. This enables them to have constant communication and keeps them from having to search each other out. 43 I , YQ IXIW 2 f , K 'f I HQ, , Q Q f Q I W -mv: If 'K L Crowley, Troy Wcrdalk photographerg Managergi i i Kari I-Iedum, Copy Hansen, Sc- niors editorg Clarita Academics editorg .-'M-f5 Eric Londgren, photographer. . Sldff Recalls FRIENDS Throughout the Year This happy-go-lucky group known as the Ta- homa staff, became organized QHAFJ early in the Spring of their junior year. Choosing Friends as their theme, they looked forward to a very creative and bright future. In fact, ev- eryone was extremely optimistic-singing and dancing the days away-until someone told them about deadlines. That's when the crisis hap- pened. Sleepless nights and screams in the dark cast an overall gloom on operations. Their first dead- line, Oct. 15, came very soon, and was met eventually on Nov. 11, Well the second date came, and was missed only by days! It was in these trying times-these dark ages that they managed to recall their theme, and somehow it alone seemed to get them through Cdoughnuts and coffee were very encouraging, howeverj. So before completely giving up all hope, the staff decided to give it one more try. This time they put their hearts into it, and, on December 16g Triumph!! They promptly dropped dead of exhaustion. However, this victory was not re- peated and they were back to normal nowg missing deadlines and all. Vernon High School. Their winning record was not as good when the Tigers played City League teams. but the games were played statistically better and the defense was much improved over the years past. The season ended with a 3 win 5 loss record. The third win was against West Bremerton and one of their better played games was against Mt. Tahoma in spite of a loss, Coach Bob Hunt stated, The team was primar- ily made up of juniors and to have really good leadership you need mainly a senior team. That might explain some ofthe leadership problems we had. Mental errors are a problem too, but they are eliminated with experience. The 1977 squad was a very close-knit group and next year's team looks toward a very bright fu- ture. BOTTOM: Donny Spruill burns through, TOP PHOTO: ROW l: R. Urquhart. M. Woodard, A, Whaley, R. Room 125 held some 50 student-elect ofHcers which made up the student council during fourth period each day. Activities were the key, and the ex- citement was rampant. Everything from forums and assemblies to contests and dances were al- ways on the agenda. Along with making their year more active and satisfying, the council members probably learned some of the most valuable lessons of their lives. The importance of unity and leadership was practiced by these students in class, and then revealed to others through their lives and actions. A four member council of seniors made up the ASB council. These officers were elected late in their junior year by their class. These combined with the seven senators from each class, the Girls' Club president, and WORLD staff edi- tors, formed agroup of council members high in leadership potential. The Year In Pictures 1 i s ' Y s i 'fi it ' sftgvf iz, Witnessing the events of the passing 1977-78 school year, Tahoma '78 is the result of the dedicated efforts of a number of individuals in addition to the staff In this book we tried as best we could to portray the year and it's events in as many pictures as possible. Thus we attempted for an accu- rate rendition of the old saying, one picture is worth a thousand words. Many donlt realize the work a yearbook involves, all the extra hours and headaches and indecisions. Many don't appreciate our efforts, however, 208 r . - 3, 1 x I. , f 1 X . l f .f fx - 'H lf' ,V A K ,MT ',g,-,Q-f.-,122 jj ff' , ' r l rs-Y , W, K l i we did do the best we could, and that's all anyone can expect. It is our sincere hope that the students and faculty of Stadium High School will value this book at the present, but also continue to look back with fond memories on these days as they leaf through it's pages in the future. So. here it is-we've enjoyed building it, and we hope you feel the same about it. By the time you've read this book. it's contents along with our days at the Old Brown Castle will have become history.
