ilinrvmnrh We, of the 1964 Tahoma staff, believe that our nation was founded upon a great Truth-that of the basic dignity of Man. This ennobling concept constitutes the theme of your annual. Man cannot flourish when enchained, either mentally or physically. He must possess certain freedoms, fundamental to Man, in order to be able to justify his existence, not only in the eyes of others, but in his own eyes as Well. Unfortunately, many of us who have grown up with these concepts, have accepted them without reflection. This is ultimately disastrous, for freedom may never be taken for granted, to do so is a contradiction of terms. In order to fully appreciate the importance of these basic freedoms, we must undergo the individual process of re-evaluating them, which may only be accomplished through questioning the authenticity of their very substance. We wish to produce a spark in those where none existed, and a desire to seek further in those inspired. As Americans, We are well-acquainted with the symbols used to desig- nate these individual freedoms, yet how many of us have taken the time to look deeper into their meanings? We have chosen to utilize these symbols in the dividers and in the end sheets which illustrate the words For purple mountain majestiesf' Each of these symbols has at least two meanings, the literal interpretation is significant in its own right, yet each contains a deeper, more profound concept which transcends the here and now. In our system of formal education, we are presented with the imple- ments to discover these truths for ourselves, which we may use. Whether or not we choose to utilize them depends upon the student and the stu- dent alone. A true democracy cannot exist when composed of an un- educated populace. This great experiment in which we are living, is by no means as yet conclusively proven as successful. Indeed, many of our most brilliant minds feel it to be in its most precarious position. An over- whelming portion of this responsibility for our nation will soon be passed directly into the hands of our generation. Indirectly the responsibility for its future is already in our hands. In keeping with this theme, the 1964 Tahoma staff has dedicated the book to our late President, John Fitzgerald Kennedy. Foreword iv
