HIGHLIGHTS DEDICATION Bishop Stresses Private School Role The solemn blessing by Bishop F. W. Freking of the new St. Xavier's High School in Junction City, on Sunday, August 27, was a proud moment for the pastor, Msgr. Thomas Keogan and for his parishioners. The role of private education in American society was the theme of the main address at dedication ceremonies. Bishop F. W. Freking said, The freedom of education which is assured through private schools is a most important consideration in the present contro- versy over federal aid to education. Quoting from Pope Pius XII, the Bishop pointed out, that the legislation which a country reserves for private schools reflects the level of the spiritual and cultural life of that country. Ground-breaking ceremonies, with Bishop F. W. Freking officiating. Inspection and formal acceptance of the school took place on August 16. M Sgt. Ambrose Forkenbrock, Kenneth Christian, Lawrence Hoover, church committee; Monsignor Keogan, Robert Marr, architect; Leroy Frank, contractor. XAYERIAN DEDICATION To you, Rt. Rev. Msgr. Thomas Keogan, whose interests have been the improvement and enrichment of our lives, whose encouragement has been our inspiration, whose optimism and determination have made it possible for us to spend our last year in a beautiful new school--to you, Monsignor we respectfully dedicate the 1962 Xaverian. A prayer of gratitude accompa- nies this tribute which you so rightly deserve. INSIDE THE NEW The assembly room and cafeteria become one when the student Classes in business education find ample body meets. space in this room. FOREWORD From the pens of poets we have an almost universal depredation of time. Wasteful time , devouring time , time's scythe , subtle thief of youth are a few among many labels. Viewing time, however, as the medium in which his- tory unfolds itself, time becomes a treasurehouse of memory. Far better than the minting of a gold- crowned king is the memory of a lovely thing , Sara Teasdale so fittingly wrote. The pages in this volume chronicle the events of busy days, fruitful hours and joyful moments so that the passage of years may not dim our recollection of them. ST. XAVIER’S HIGH Over sixty freshmen in their homeroom prepare to take Differential Aptitude Tests. Several students seem lost in the 219 feet long corridor. These pioneers have not only marked time but have set a covetable pace. They are bidding farewell to some of the 600 books they have studied or have gone thru ; they tell of the 6, 000 pencils they used or lost; they admit of greying eighteen parental heads, and of wearying soul and body of not a few teachers. Nevertheless their achievements are highly commendable. They became presidents, editors, scholarship and contest winners, basketball stars and football heroes. Fortified with a deep religious train- ing they confidently go forward until Time meets Eternity. CONGRATULATIONS FROM KAW THEATER J. Cynova, W. Caspar, J. Montgomery, F. Corcoran, D. Kamphaus, J. Its aim is three fold: to encourage superior students to read outstanding books; to freely discuss the ideas found in these books; and to have their ideas challenged by this discussion. Meetings are held outside of school time and no school credit is given for membership. The Great Books Foundation of Chicago University is promoting the program on a national scale. To date, the project flourishes in forty states and five foreign coun- tries. Four clubs have been formed at St. Xavier's. Neither have students been so carefully screened for membership, nor has the reading material reached the level of difficulty required in the Louisville program but St. Xavier's has made a humble beginning. 37 The Women's Relief Corps present a new silk flag for use in the new assembly hall.
