Lon Hinitt returned the Aurora kickoff to the 38 yard line and the Rams moved on the ground— Larry Langvardt and Jim Wahle carrying—ot the three, where Wahle plunged over. The conver- sion attempt failed. Minutes later Wahle scored a- gain; this time on a fifty-yard run, after a brief Aurora drive. The conversion again failed. Hinitt intercepted an Aurora pass to break up the drive which followed the touchdown, but three plays later fumbled it back. In the second quarter the Rams held Aurora on downs at their three-yard line, but on their first running play they fumbled it back, Larry Sorrell recovering it in the end zone for an Aurora touch- down. Aurora also missed their conversion. A 40-yard pass play from Jim Lutz to Larry Langvardt gave the Rams a first-and-goal on the vi- sitor’s 1. After a 15-yard penalty set the Rams back. Lutz threw to Dennis Ryan for the score. The same combination worked for the extra point, and the Rams led 19- Auburn Nips St. Xavier’s Rams 26-12 Auburn High School edged St. Xavier's Rams 26 12 Friday night, in the Rams’ first attempt at six- man football. The Rams showed surprising strength in the contest which was played at the high school athletic field. In the second half, when they began to get the feci of the game, they outscored the experi- enced visitors. Lon Hinitt, Jim Wahle, and Jim Lutz were consistent gainers for the Rams. Hinitt threw a 15-yard pass to Wahle in the first quar- ter, before they lost the ball and Auburn’s Mel Koci scored on a 36 yard run. Larry Langvardt returned the ensuing kickoff to the 30, but a brief Ram drive fizzled, and mo- mnets later—at the beginning of the second period— Koci scored again, on a 15-yard plunge. The visitors’ star halfback scored the third Auburn TD just before the end of the half, run- ning 2 yards for the tally. Palmer converted, and Auburn led 19-0 at the half. Lutz opened the second half by returning the Auburn kickoff to his 31. Langvardt threw 26 yards to Dennis Ryan, and Jim Wahle scored from 15 yards out. Passes from Langvardt to Jerry Frakes, and fro mHinitt to Ryan took the ball to the Auburn 25. Frakes, and from Hinitt to Ryan lost possession. Bill Jenkins then threw a 55 yard touchdown pass to Lee Pal- mer for the final Wildcat score. Later, after an exchange of fumbles, Langvardt threw 25 yards to Wahle. and Hinitt pas- sed 15 to Mike Trost. The Rams fumbled to Auburn, but the Wildcats bobbled it right back, center Rich McDonald re- covering, and Lutz carried to the Auburn 1. Hinitt scored on a short pass from Langvardt to end the scoring. The bristling Ram pass attack and the closeness of the score a- gainst their experienced oppo- nents made St. Xavier’s grid pros- pects look surprisingly good in their initial season. Their perfor- mance was a credit to mentor Tom Ridder. Rams Ground Game Good In Victory Defeat Aurora, 48 to 34, In Contest Sunday St. Xavier's Rams, whose limit- ed successes thus far this season have been achieved through the air, got their feet back on the ground Sunday afternoon and rolled to a 48-34 triumph over the Aurora Eagles in Aurora. It was the Rams’ second, and more decisive, win over the Eag- les this season. And to get it they had to overcome a brilliant one- man performance by opposing halfback Bill Valcoure. The 150-pounder, playing vir- tually without support, ran for three Eagles touchdowns and pass- ed for two more, to account for •11 Aurora's tallies. The Rams recovered an Aur- ora fumble early in the first quarter, and following short dash- es by Jim Wahle and Larry Lang- vardt, Jim Lutz passed 21 yards to Dennis Ryan for the game’s first score, then drop kicked a two-point conversion. Short runs by Jim Wahle and Bobby Willcoxon set up the sec- ond Ram score, with Lutz throw- ing 32 yards to Lon Hinitt for the tally and again drop kicking the conversion. Valcoure took the kickoff, start- ed up the middle, broke free of a couple of tacklers, and raced 78 yards to put Aurora back in the game. Dan Fraser drop kick- ed the extra point. St. Xavier's scored once more before the half. Early in the sec- ond quarter Jim Wahle broke through the center of the Eagle line but lost the ball when he ran into a linebacker. Leo Henry caught it in the air and zoomed 28 yards to the goal. The conver- sion attempt was no good. Lutz passed 18 yards to Jim Byrne for another second quarter touchdown, but flubbed the con- version. SI. Xavier Ram Upset Concordia Catholic 45 to 26 The St. Xavier Rams slapped an upset 45-20 decision on pre- viously-unbeaten Concordia Cath- olic High here Friday night, to break into the win column for the second time in six starts. Concordia went into the skir- mish with a four game winning streak. The Rams recovered a Concor- dia fumble on the second scrim- mage play of the game. Two line plays picked up 14 yards and Leo Henry threw 15 yards to Mike Trost for the game’s first touch- down. The extra point attempt was wide. Keene scored Concordia’s first TD moments later, following Langvardt’s fumble of a Catholic punt. Bisnette plunged for the extra point. St. Xavier’s took the kickoff and swept 60 yards in 11 plays for their second score. Jim Wahle tallied from the six on an end run. The conversion attempt fail- ed again. Concordia bounced right back into the lead, when Clay ran 39 yards for a touchdown and Bis- nette again converted running. The visitors added a third touchdown in the opening min- utes of the second quarter, busy Bisnette going over from the 6. The extra ooint attempt failed. The Dwight youngser caught touchdown passes of 47 and 50 yards, scored on runs of 48 and 55 yards from scrimmage, and tallied another on a 68 yard kick- off return. Patterson, another rocketing Rocket, took a pitchout and raced 59 yards to a score the first time Dwight had possesion of the ball. Interceptions and lack of power on the ground hurt the Rams, who completed 16 of 28 passes. The Rams were down three when they finally tallied. Langvardt swept right end for ten; Jim Lutz hit Lon Hinitt with an 18-yard aerial; then threw to Dennis Ryan on the two. Jim Wahle, the only Ram run- ner with any force, bulled over. Langvardt threw to Ryan for the extra point. Following a Rocket punt. Lutz hit Wahle for 22 yards, but Haun intercepted the next pass and raced 55 yards for another Dwight tally. The Rams penetrated to the Dwight three on the next series, but the Rockets bottled them up there, and ran out the time re- maining in the half. Wahle set up the second Ram touchdown with several long runs, and eventually scored from the two. The Ram score was tv) -c°5 ic aV % y A j- v 0 J. % c%.- 'O, G % % Mimi Wood, Lon Hinitt.
