But for a mixer in the gym everybody had to take off his shoes. I went to some of them and sometimes I had fun Other times - weir, the story was different. A few good bands played too . K . 19 Football enlivened fall school life Our team was pure soul! The Victory City Bombers rolled up win after win, and spirit soared. I rode in some of the bus caravans. They helped unite all the sections of the school into a single voice. The whole school, united. was proud . H Dances eased the daily grind of school life The first big date dance was the one at Homecoming. Offensively, the Xavier Bombers were led by senior backs Denny Costello. Bob Ries, and Chuck Fitzpatrick, who recorded a combined total of 122 points, Costello being the leading scorer with 52. Fitzpatrick tallied the most number of yards for any Bomber player, gain- ing 668 yards, averaging 4.9 yards a carry. Marty Mooney led the offense at the number one quarterback spot, passing for 759 yards and nine TD's, with Clint Haslerig. his favorite receiver, snatching 20 passes and scoring 20 points. 29 Powerful offense and defense crush opponents The Bomber defense, spearheaded by line- backers Barry Shultis and Ted Mack, showed itself to be most impressive. They held their opponents to but 32 points, best in the city. and a new school record. The Xavier defensive backfield snatched 26 of the opposing team's passes. with All-State Joe Ratterman grabbing 8. Mike Kramer led the team in tackles with 53. I 0 hL ' ' a $qu Frosh grab second place GCL finish The 1969 Freshman football team turned in one of the finest records of St. Xavier frosh football history. Contributing to the fine mark was the fresh defensive unit. Modelled after the itBig Blue, the fresh were unscored upon in five of their seven contests. The offense, although plagued by backfield injuries, dis- played a consistent ball control game. In seven contests, the Bomber offense ground out 1000 yards behind the dependable biocking of the Strongline. 35 Cross country runs to best year The St. Xavier Cross Country Team ran to a very fine season, They ended up with the finest season that a Cross Country team has yet pro- duced at X. They participated in the Mt. Healthy and Miami Invitationals and finished 5th out of 29 teams, and 11th out of 28 teams respectively. In the GCL meet they placed 3rd and took 2nd in the District tournament. Se- niors Weldon and Wilkens, and Junior Lunne led the team. The district meet came next and they had no trouble in winning it. The Aqua-Bombers' next goal was the State meet, and they finished 8th against the swimming powers of northern Ohio. The team was led by many able swimmers. including Cfear, Crow- ley, Oppert, and the two Schroeder brothers. 41 ABOVE LEFT: Ratterman brings the baH upcourt against Purcell. A potent offense and an unyielding defense were the key to success. The team was led by Mike Geoghegan, an All- GCL pick, who Jed the team in both scoring and rebounding. The Bombers were the 4th seeded team and fig- ured to have a good shot at the title. The Big Blue rolled to an easy win over Goshen. 87-33 in the first game. In the second game Hughes was the opponent and the team scored anoth- er easy victory, 77-56. But the next game with Roger Bacon proved to be their downfall and last game. The Bombers could not overcome the fine shooting of Bacon and lost 68-50. JVis take 3rd straight league title This year's Junior Bombers came from last place in their freshman year to first place in capturing St. X's third Straight reserve title The team's two strong points were determina- tion and spirit. They were tied for the GCL with three games remaining, all with teams who had previously defeated them. They came from behind in the closing seconds of the first two to win them. The team was ied by Bun- ning. Burke, and Klotz at the guard spot, while Accetta, Bondi, and Hooper provided the board strength. LEFT TO RIGHT: Mr. Koncel. ihlendorf. Kiotz. Burke, Bunning. How- ever, they had a far better team than their record indicates. The team was coached by lst year man Mr. Bill Phillips who did a finejob. The frosh finished 4th in the GCL, beating every team except Elder. The team finished 2nd in the first freshman basketball tourna- ment. losing to Elder by 5 points in the cham- pionshipgame. Coach Phillips feels that a number of the frosh will definitely be varsity material. 49 Soccer gains power with year-round play Under the guidance of Br. Horvath and Mr. Morrissey, the soccer team vastly improved on last year's winless season with a record of 4-5- 2. The team played all year round, but only in the winter was it officially sponsored by St. X. In the fall and spring, the Club played as the Blue Independent in the SAY League. The winter had to combat loss of personnel and bad weather. but they had the advantage of a new home field. The reserve team gained fun- damental knowledge and their year end record was 2-62. 50 Varsity Soccer. BACK ROW: Mr Morrissey. Weber, Scheper, Rauen, Weale. Blessing. Pelzer, FRONT ROW: Meade. Chuck OlLeary led all hitters with a i400-plus average. John Slone headed the mound corps. The squad was largely juniors and two of them, Cullinane and Rebsch, made the All-GCL team. Joe Ratter- man was also on the GCL team. The reserves finished 10-6. second in the league, which could indicate a good future for St. X4 baseball. I .m .V. , ..A d..- W7- Baseball. They began the year with a second place finish in the Cavalier Re- lays among local teams. A third place finish in the GCL meet showed the real ability of the team. In the District meet the trackmen came home with an excellent 4th place. Chuck Fitzpatrick took first in the 100 yard dash in both the GCL and District meets. Denis Lunne in the miles run gained lst and 2nd place in the GCL and District meets respectively. Reserve Golf: Schlotman. Lehman, Weatherwax. Kumpf, Ostholth, Varsity Golf: Dearwester. Coddington, Kroger. Roettker. Pick, Golfers putt around Golf occupied its usual position in the lineup of spring sports. A strong team was greeted with scant enthusiasm. The team, which was composed entirely of seniors, did an excellent job in league play suffering at the hands of Moeller and Elder. But despite all the talent. hard luck raised its head keeping from the 1969 Xavier golfers the thrill and laurels of a championship. SLXavier ' ,0 Elder so Stf$aVMr ' O, ' 'MoeHer 30 - S ane . The group was affiliated with the Young Friends of the Arts. Sodality searches for Christian social role Sodality moved this year under its new moderator, Fr, Nastold. S.J. There were more juniors than ever before. The Friday noontime Masses were run by the Sodality. Much time was devoted to seraching for the Christian role in society. One group of seniors made a trip to Appalachia for social work. One junior cell made a weekend retreat at the Jesuit novitiate in Hamersville, Ohio. Under the direction of Mr. Robert Freeman, with the aid of Mr. Delaney. S.J.. the band has shown our school what it has to of- fer. The new uniforms purchased by the Mothers' Club and the great increase in mem- bership have resulted in a spirit and enthusi- asm which hasn't affected the band for years. The Pep Band has also greatly improved under student director Fred Bahr. Some of the more skilled band members have formed a stage band which has entered competition at the Walnut Hills Jazz Contest. The Chemistry Club moved under four stu- dent directors eiected ea rly in the year. These directors picked the experiments to be worked on and were responsible for obtaining guest speakers. In numerous meet- ings throughout the year, administration, fac- ulty. and lay advisers planned for St. X: 1979. By the end of the year a secret, seventeen page report was finished; it was the blueprint for future growth. Toward the end of the year, the seniors drafted their own report - a ten page critique of X. The senior paper mentioned some problems and their apparent solutions. and it calied for an open forum where all inter ested parties could gather to discuss these. 96 97 99 Long hours of school are spent in class So common as to be overlooked, yet so time consuming that it devours a good part of twelve years of life. It is the essence of school: it is the most academic topic in the Academics Section. Sometimes boring, sometimes not, in every school it must be present. Some five to six hours a day are spent in class, and school time and class time are terms that are synony- mous. But for many the only connection they have with St. Xavier is what happens in class. And it is our high school career. ' 2 S M x x v a x m The learning process went on outside the confines of a classroom A sociorogy field day was organized to allow seniors a chance to learn outside the class- room situation. Except for a last minute can- cellation at the Federal Reserve Bank, the day wasjudged successful. The art class is looking to the future when a more comprehensive course will take in sculpe turing as well as painting. Only space is hold- ing this advance up. In the present, the Shilli- to's art exhibit produced a first place winner in addition to two honorable mentions. In the final analysis, Mrs. Rothan called the year a great successf 101 TOP ROW: 5. Nearly 300 men were tiung out like seeds in a gale. But before then, much happened. The Senior Class of 69 started in May of '68 with the 10-0 buttons and Student Council Elections. Then August came, the day for See niors '69 to mass. From Registration Day until June it was our yeari 10-0 was no idie threat and the orange stick ers after each game showed the facts. Re- member the Senior bus in the caravans t0 the games? Always the loudest. The Victory Bars afterwards, the Pep Rallies, and finally the GCL and the undefeated season. X could never be the same without us. This is the year hair was down, and sideburns long. The year of boots and wire glasses. We shook iem atthe foundations. Basketball was an easy season. 2nd place in the GCL. Probably due to the sell out crowds at the games. Remem ber the Blue Pride Squad? Remember the night Moeller vs. X in wrestling? The cheering was unbelievable. We beat them good that night, Remember Gerry Geisel in the plays and Chris Hayes and Dick Schmidt? Do you re member Greg Howard and Barry Schultis in Westside Story? They never acted before. What talent in '69. 136 E. Mark Aieta John J. Almond Kenneth F. Arnold Edward R Aufdenkampe Stanley R Bachmeyer William W. Backus Chris J. Bader Robert P, Baechtold Henry F. Homework often went undone. There were so many details, tiny details. that had to be ac- complished before acceptance, or rejection for that matter, would come. On top of that, there was worry and fret. But finally it hap- pens. You're accepted! It's the end of four long, hard years but it can hardly be called the end. In any case. '69 is gone. The prom, that big moment of our high school careers. was awaited with eager anticia patton by some and with less than enthusiasm by others. Despite all the traditional criticism of the band and of excessive administration interference. the Junior-Senior Prom was the highlight of the upperclasses' social year as usual. 180 . . .at Convention Center The Exiles played, Mike Jones emceed, and Joe Ratterman reigned. We danced at Conven- tion Center with our dates until one, then came the rounds of parties, afl night parties that provided us with an excuse to see that wonder of the morning, the sunrise. Graduation ceremonies usher out PRIDE Caps. gowns, tassels e that's what every graduation has. and ours was no different. There were 294 guys and I was only one. My parents sat among so many others. but they were there because of me. HPomp and Cire cumstance began the ceremonies : it al- ways does e and eventually. after the speech- es, I got my diploma. Charles Wolf spoke We used to coach the Royals; and John Menke- dick spoke in our behalf. That night was the end of four years of work. but it wasn't really an end at all. but a beginning. 182 Senior Directory AIETA.
