THE X-RAY ST. XAVIER HIGH SCHOOL CINCINNATI, OHIO A jesuit school for boys the 0nd of 1111' bl'gimzing For us, the students of St. Xavier, our high school years mark a beginning, not an end, of our education and training for adult life. Upon our graduation, however, we have reached the end of this beginning. The faculty here has tried to instill in us the fundamentals of our education-0ur spir- itual, intellectual, physical, and social training. Without the basics in these helds, the rest of our education is in vain. The class of :64 is the Ftrst class to complete all four years at the new school and with it, St. Xavier High itself has reached the end of its be ginning. New traditions laid down for four years have now been completed by this yeafs gradu- ates and St. Xavier is now ready to move on into the future to higher things, just as its graduates are ready to move on higher. The rising sun coming completely over the hori- zon just after dawn marks the end of the begin- ning of a new day and symbolizes the completion of our basic education and the closing of an era at St. Xavier High. Yet, it would be the first thing to be noticed were it absent or neglected. The solid foundation of our Catholic Religion stays with us throughout high school, steadily supporting our deepening and strengthening Faith. Here at Xavier we have the privilege of daily Mass and Communion. A few days are set aside each year for a retreat. This year a special Mass and address by Bishop Fetters, M.M., an alumnus, brought us, as a school7 Closer to God. But perhaps the most subtle and lasting influence on our spiritual growth has been the atmosphere of the schoolean atmos- phere conducive to the religious advancement of both teacher and student. At 8:55 a busy clay begins. Five periods, Mass, and lunch, then the school day is over. Look at a single day or even a week: the achievement seems insignificant. But look back at the hrst day in early September of our freshman year when our teachers first introduced us to high school studies. Look at the last day, last class of senior year. Four years of Religion, English, a foreign language, mathematics, and at least two of science and his- tory have given us a broad and wellarounded intellectual beginning, a foundation for our fur- ther studies in college. With our senior year, we have reached the end of this beginning. $1 I ntellectual t .2 V 3! Physical 10 Perhaps never before have the facilities for the physical development of St. Xavier students been as great as they are now. The spacious gym com- plete with weights, parallel bars, and basketball courts; the large campus, and strong intramural programeall were provided for use by St. Xavier students. We have joined together to cheer on the varsity, reserve, and freshman teams; and 1964 has been a banner year. It will be hard to fOrget the swimming team, first place in the district; the freshman and reserve football champions; the defeat of Elder and the 40e20 romp over Purcell; the crox-vcl at the X-LaSalle game, and the 11--1 record in the G.C.L. ll St. Xavier trains men for the world by giving them the complete background necessary to be responsible and upright citizens in todayls world. The purpose of a high school is not only to teach the students the knowledge contained in books but also to teach the students how to live with his fellow man. For this purpose Xavier provides a lounge furnished with tables, Chairs, pop machines, ping-pong, and a jukebox. There is also the large, wcll-llt cafeteria, gaily painted, serving food and drink An intramural schedule is provided which includes all ycars and classes. Throughout the year there are nummtous dances and sock-hops all of which contribute to the ability of the Xavier student to adapt to his sur- roundings. Social FACULTY VERY REV. THOMAS C. Orphans line up to beat Joe. Seiiinger. Strictly speaking, the Sodality is an organization, but to many students at Xavier, it has become a way of life. A socialist is trained to pray, which must be an impor- tant part of life no matter what we do. To help them ac- complish their goals of sanctihcation of self, sanctifica- tion of others, and defense of the Church, they spend part of each day in either mental or oral prayer. Partic- ipation at Mass and receiving Holy Communion is also part of their daily spiritual life. Christ said that good works are necessary to reach Heaven, so the socialists cloxft leave these out either. Some of their larger proj- ects are: the canned food drive, teaching religion on the week-ends, and instructing our own freshmen, All this work the Senior Sociality carries on with the help and inspiration of their moderator, Mr. Parmantie, SJ. The Underclassman Sodalities prepare our students for the Senior Sodality and for the Act of Consecration. Juniors and sophomores through regular conferences with their moderators follow a daily program of spiritual activities. Aiming to sanctify themselves and others, the juniors acted as big brothers for orphans at St. Josephk and St. Aloysiusis Orphanages, worked with the seniors at Millvale and with the sophomores, worked in the Christ in Christmas Campaign, and tried to give six poor families the first real Christmas of their lives. The sophomores, although often workng with the juniors and seniors, concen- trated on volunteer work at Drake Memorial Hospital. This organization is the Apostleship of Prayer. The members, or promoters, instruct their classes on what the Morning Offering means; and they keep the classes informed as to the intention of the Pope each month. In their weekly meetings, students from all four years come together and discuss ways of better instructing their classmates. With the help of their moderator, Fr, Raterman, S.J., the promoters do an excellent job of instilling a spirit of prayerfulness in the student body. This is a fact that all acolytes are aware of. The Acolytes at school have members from all four years, juniors and seniors serving the hrst Mass, freshman and sophomores at the second. Besides giving an opportunity for former acolytes to keep up their devotion, it also gives new boys 3 chance to learn to serve with the help of Brother Schnei- der, SJ. X -Ray Joe Svirbely works late to meet a deadline. With a new moderator this year, Mr. Grosh, 8.1., and new editors Tom Harig and Andy H0- man, there have been many changes in the X- Ray. Although the organization is still much the same-editors, business staE, eteaethis year, the product is much different and much better. The color picture this year is the first one ever to ap- pear in the X-Ray. Another innovation is that the yearbook covers the entire year, not just the first two-thirds. This made the late delivery neces- sary. The entire staff has put in a lot of work to produce a yearbook both new and original. TOP PICTURE. When Mr. Anderson, S.J., left, it was neces- sary to fmd a new moderator. The two new mode erators, Mr. Emmett and Mr. Pennington, S.J., have shown that they are able to help the stue dents on the staff keep up the fine work. This has taken the form of a single, large-page, weekly newspaper, Whose purpose is to keep the students in touch with the many activities taking place each week. Under the guidance of Mr. Thissen, S.J., the X-Press has become popular for its quick, authoritative reporting of the news. Originally limited to a staff of ten seniors, the X-Press began training under- classmen later in the year to assume running of the paper next year. The X-Press, because of its small staff and versatility, has a reputation as a compact, yet complete newspaper. Participation is the soul of an extracurricular activity In 1963-64 debating at St. Xavier felt a double increase in participation: a greater en- rollment and a large increase in the amount of competition. But quality was not lost to quantity. The Bellarmine Debaters, under the direction of Mr. Gier, S.J., began winning in November in Toledo, at numerous tournaments afterwards, and hnished fifth in the State Finals. LLB,, de- baters won trophies at Toledo Whitmer, Dayton Oakwood, and Wyoming, among others. Over forty freshmen signed up for novice debate under Fr. Stccnken, SJ. But behind this simple statement lies the hours of work of Xas artists involved in publicizing school events by means of their posters which all the students are familiar with. These post- ers have two purposes. The most obvious end of the art work is to make the average student aware of school activities and projects. The other purpose of the activities of the Club,s members is to give them a chance to express their creativity and humor in art. Thus the Poster Club benefits directly both the school and its own members. Of course, the Club doesnat confine its activities to book-collecting-discussions of pertinent topics are carried on at the meetings and individual study is encour- aged. Through the meetings and their own study, the ClubFS members have increased their knowledge of the world and its affairs and made themselves better aH-around stun dents and citizens. The Glee Club is a group of students that enjoy singing and having fun. Led by Denny Crane they spent the Christmas holidays visiting children in or- phanages and shut-ins in hospitals with the NIC- Auley Glee Club. The Glee Club climaxed the year at the Musieade in which they added richness to the program in union with the MeAuley Glee Club. The spiritual counterpart of the Glee Club is the Choir. Under Fr. Baseball Behind the strong pitching of Joe Sadelfeld, Ed Kluska, and Jed 01301111611, the Varsity began the season as potential GCL and District champions. The pitching staff posted 4 shut-outs, one a no-hitter against Colerain tin which 05C0nnell, Pellman, and Sadelfeld teamed um and another a two hitter by Sadelfeld against Elder in the District Tournament. The team lost out in the District to Withrow as Ed KIuska pitched a one-hitter. Although the pitching corps was the teams strong point, the team hitting began to come up to par as the season moved along. Tom Breving, Bob Arnzen, Bill Geers, and Walt Sun- derhaus led the way. Breving, Reder, and Arnzen walloped homers over the newly-built fence at Xav- ier,s Held. The team lost the GCL championship 3e2 in extra innings in the last game of the season. The final record was 12-7. The Reserves fought their way to a third-place finish in the GCL and an over-all 11e5 record. The hitting power was strong as the team scored 101 runs. Led by Bill Gallagher, they went unde- feated in dual competition, even beating Elder who hnished first in the district meet. But in the three GCL meets X was only able to place third out of seven teams. Bill Gallagher finished first in the Enal meet with a time of 10:34. In the district St. X was a respectable fifth. Gallagher hnished twelfth in this meet followed by freshman, Art Regan, in thirteenth place. Although the team will lose seniors Gallagher, Tyirin, Ionna, Homan, LePere, and Miller, Coach Hagerty expects the team to be the best ever next year with underelassmen Art Regan and Don Dolan leading the way. The team did manage to fmish second in most of their meets and kept up a good driving spirit in practice. Coach Ballaban hopes to build a track within the next few years and is sure that the teams will improve greatly with the necessary equipment. The Reserve Track Team under the able leadership of Mr. Durso had a spirited team and they also Enished second in most of their meets. Several of these boys will be a big asset to the varsity in the future. Conditioning is essentialethe boys in the best condition win. Despite inexperi- ence the matmen came near to upsetting Prince- ton, a very fine squad, in the hrst meet. In the second Princeton meet, Xavier lost by only one match. The Bombers continued their almost-win- ning streak by almost beating Oak Hills and Moeller. Their perseverance was rewarded with the first and only win of the season over Wood- ward with a rally of five pins. Rocky Ryan and Tom Kremer won trips to the regional meet but their more experienced opponents edged them out. 144 Cheerleaders It takes courage to stand up before a crowd and shout till it hurts. What hurt the most was that sometimes it seems so futileethe crowd just doesnit want to join in. The lot of the cheer- leader is to try to infect the crowd with his own enthusiastic approval of the boys on the field or on the hardwood court. He and his job are overlooked. He is not thanked, but he goes on try- ing to do the job that has to be done. Membership in this select group rose to a score of boys, and it shows well the spirit some students have for their school. Bowling LEFT PICTURE. The turnout of over 56 men throughout the year astonished not only the faculty but also the student body as well. It appeared we had enough to insure bowlingas future at St. X. Due to the gentle way in which Fr. The Halloween Dance ended the month. The X-Prms was born and the first issue came out early in November. Arch-rival Purcell was crushed by the varsity in the G.C.L. doubler header, and the reserves took Xis first G.C.L. title of the year, with the Fresh soon adding the second, The basketball season began near the monthhs end. The Thanksgiving holidays occasioned the traditional Thanksgiving Dance. In the Erst half of December students were treated to the General Motorsi Science Show in the gym. The spring play, No Time for Sergeants, was sandwiched in between these two events. The twentieth through the twenty-second were the final exam dates for seniors, with the unclerclassmen fac- ing theirs the next week. On the last day of May the Baccalaureate Mass for the graduates and their parents was offered.
