RELIGION The measure of a Catholic high school Which is trying to foster deep faith and re- ligious piety in its student body is the quality of its religion department. At St. Xavier we have an unusually successful group of priests Who use their talents to present Catholic beliefs and principles clearly and interestingly to their pupils. Fathers Brown, Hanna, Lilly, Linz, Mc- Carthy, McKenna, Majerowski, Rater- man, and Wieber are all experts in their fields and are to be congratulated for the fine way they have taught and counseled St Xavier students-past and present. At Christmas time many Sodalists can be seen placing Christ-ine Christmas posters in downtown stores, and distrib- uting heaping food baskets to the poor of Cincinnati. All four years of Sodality members have their own apostolates; these include: Little Sisters of the Poor, St. Aloysius Orphanage, Santa Maria Institute, and many school apostolates. The director of Sodality, Father Midden- dorf, carries on a vigorous freshman in: struction program with the help of the seniors. This is the culmination of the staffs efforts, a yearbook which we hope will continue the long, award-winning reign of the X-Ray. Photographers Henry Meek, Bob Strunk, Dave OTOOIe, and Mike Mathers put their stamp of approval on this yeafs photographs. 37 PREP During the past year, the Prep has performed the almost impos- sible task of bettering its excel- lent reputation. This is due not only to the welI-trained staff of writers, but also to its fine editor Leonard Brinkmoeller and Mr. King, moderator. The most not- able change in the Prep this year is its form. It now employs the regular magazine form, as op- posed to the tabloid form of pre- vious years. Further pursuing diversihca- tion, the Prep now contains every- thing from sports news and an article on the favorite teacher, to the honor roll. CAMPION DEBATERS Under the expert guidance of its new moderator, Mr. Shurr, the St. Xavier de- bate society completed one of its most successful seasons. The varsity debate team, Tom Hoobler, Dave Nordloh, Dave Schmid, and Jerry Simmons, compiled a 22-9 record and traveled to tournments in De- troit, Michigan; Columbus, Urbana, and Dayton, Ohio. The underclassmen debaters and speakers also had numer- ous opportunities to improve themselves for future years by debating in and speaking at many local tournaments. Various members have also done well at the student de- bate congresses held in south- ern Ohio by being elected oHi- cers and helping pass many bills. Front Row: V. Beckman, F. Palmisano, C. This tightly-knit band of electronic wizards, held in check by Mr. ,Bre- zine, is fast increasing in size and field of endeavor. To do this an operator must know his Morse Joe Kappes, radio-man extraordinary, tunes in West Code and radio theory thoroughly Baden College on the iirig, and obtain his license. Third and fourth year students in the Clas- sical languages at Xavier recognize the many values contained in them. The interest of these students in the Classics is shown outside the CLASSICAL classroom by their participation in the meet- ings of the Classical Club. Moderated by Father Walsh, the members hold discussions designed C LU B to develop the intellect and reliect on the pur- pose of man's existence. In these discussions Father Walsh also touches on the values of a J esuit education and thereby gives to these boys a better understanding of its importance. From these meetings, St. Xavier students become clear thinking men and better Catholics. Firsi Row: F, Cloppert, J. Wolf, B. Eastlake, B. Strauss. Second Row: R. Peake, R. Rooney, C. Voegele, R. However, the har- mony they produce does not just come natur- ally. Behind it goes many hours of practice under the direction of Mr. Disselhorst. This year, for the hrst time, our ambitious choir and glee club toured the hospitals at Christ- mas time, helping cheer some of the patients with their carols. To round out their schedule, they contributed their annual part to this year's Musicade. Left to Right; Mr. Disselhorst, Moderator, P. Schneider, T. Singer, D. Wiethe, B. DISSelkamp, M. Kramer, C. Their marching does much to enliven the half-time at footd ball games With its sparkling music and clever movements. After the foot- ball season, work doesn,t stop. Mr. O,Halloran and Mr. Schneider take the marching band in hand, and con- vert it into a concert band. They then join with the Glee Club to present the annual Musicade. FOR THE SACRED HEART Standing foremost in the purposes of the J esuit education- al system is the spiritual development of every student in it. Here at St. Xavier, this primary purpose is strengthened by an organization which is devoted to the greater honor and glory of God-The Apostleship of Prayer. This group encompasses a large number of the students at Xavier Who promise to pro- mote the salvation of all men by living exemplary Catholic lives and encouraging others to do likewise. This organization brings to the student a fuller realization of his religious obli- gation and, thereby, fulfills their purpose of developing the students spiritually. 55 I . t f -:u w Freshmen Retreatants meditate between talks in their home rooms. JV David Bertke has a conference with Fr. Erpenbeck dur- ing the Freshman Retreat. Each year every student at St. Xavi- er High School makes a retreat, either at school itself or at the Milford retreat house. The freshmen and sophomores par- ticipate in school retreats the week fol- lowing semester examinations. The stu- dents receive instruction in the chapel, and have spiritual reading in their class- rooms. The juniors and seniors have the added advantage of a closed retreat at the Loyola Retreat House for Youth at Milford. Here they live for two and a half days in the silence of the Jesuit grounds. They spend their time praying the rosary and stations outdoors, listen- ing to the talks of the retreat master, and personal meditation. Father McAuley, one of the many fine retreat- masters heard at Milford, looks over the sched- ule in his room. Fr. Mulhern returned another year to conduct the Junior Sodality Retreat. Fr. STUDENT MASS The focal point of a school day at St. Xavier is the Holy Sacriflce of the Mass. The Student Mass is an impor- tant part of the daily schedule at St. Xavier because the religious aspect is emphasized very much in J esuit edu- cation. The students participate at Mass in various ways. They assist by singing a High Mass, answering the responses, or meditating on the theme of the Mass. The freshmen and sopho- mores have their Mass at 8:10, while the juniors and the seniors have their Mass at 11:30. There has been fine at- tendance at Communion, especially at the 11:30 Mass because of the new rule concerning fasting before receiv- ing Holy Communion. Almost all St. Xavier seniors receive Holy Communion each day at 11:30 Mass. MASS OF THE HOLY SPIRIT As the students slowly filed out of St. Xavier Church, an end came to a long tradition e a tra- dition 119 years old. For this was the last year students of St. Xavier would attend the Mass of the Holy Spirit in old St. Xavier Church. In 1840 the iirst such Mass was held there, now in 1959 the last. For those 119 years the Mass of the Holy Spirit was the formal opening of the school year, the day on which they prayed for all the benefits a good school year could offer. Fr. McCummisky, in his sermon, encouraged the students to pray the Mass with their whole hearts in order to obtain all the benefits they desired and needed. This is one of the most important events of the school year; and for as long as St Xavier exists, it will go on. However, no longer Will it be said in the lofty Church of St Xavier. Fr. lVIcCummisky asks the students to pray With their whole hearts for the benefits of a good school year. As the chimes sound, the celebrant, deacon, and sub- deacon bow to recite the Sanctus. The entire student body receives Holy Communion 1 l WQ '1 W 'f , for the intention of a successful academic year. NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY Front Row: R Bueter, D. Weber, T. McCoy, D Schmid, T. Harmon. Its purpose is to foster in its members an appreciation of fine art, classical music, and other cultural activities. RED CROSS Why are there more people playing checkers at Good Samari- tan Hospital than ever before? The obvious answer is that the St Xavier chapter of the Junior Red Cross has invaded. Mr. Disselhorstis boys help out at the hospital every afternoon, including Saturday and Sunday. Each student on the crew makes a two hour visit every other week playing cards, checkers, 0r chess with the patient to whom he is assigned that day. Later in the af- ternoon, the students feed one of the patients who is unable to take care of himself. There are seven directors in charge of a crew of four men each These directors generally take care of the program which started February 8, and continues until the end of the school year. . 54 i ds a Marionite Rite Mass at St. Anth r . SENIORS IN MEMORIAM Dennis Boyle was not the kind of flashy, extroverted person who gets his name and picture in print He worked after school and e0u1drft join as many school activities as he wanted to. Quiet and unassuming he was, yet he always had a ready smile for a joke, a helping hand for an unpleasant task and a high spirited enthusiasm for sports, whether he was watching or playing, He loved fun, yet he was always willing to accept the re- sponsibilities that go with fun. On the day of the tragic acccident which snuffed out his life, he was helping to prepare the food and drinks for the picnic, while othersAsome of whom he had gone out of his way to drive to the picnieewere playing baseball. It seems that even in death Denny Boyle is still he1ping others. For his death w the manner, the suddenness of itebrought home to all of us, and especially his own class, the truth of how close death really is: that at any time any or all of us may be called to give an accounting of our lives, and we must be ready. It is a mathematical impossibility for all football teams to have a winning rec- ord because in every football game there must be a loser. This is not going to be an excuse for a two won, six lost record, but in three of those losses a touchdown and the extra points would have given the Bombers a victory or a tie One of the main reasons for the unim- pressive record was the caliber of the teams that opposed our teaml Half of the teams op- posed by St. Xavier were at one time or an- other rated among the first ten schools in the state. St. Xavier also opposed the champions of the cityts two leagues, the GCL and PHSL; and the team defeated the PHSL champion, Woodward. One of the brighter spots of the recent football campaign was the team defense. This defense held the opposition to two or fewer touchdowns in five of the eight games, St. Xavier was only able to eke out wins from two of these five teamsethe main reason the oifense. The offense was obviously the chief reason for St. X75 losing campaign. This of- fense was able to muster only four touch- downs during the eight games. After the first three games of the season, of which the Bombers won two, it appeared as if the team was finally rolling; the game was lost to Canton Central Catholic which won all but its last game. Unfortunately the team lost the next two, and was forced to en- ter into GCL competition with only the quar- terback of its starting backfield able to play. Even with these three backfield starters the going in the conference would have been tough, but without these it was almost an unobtainable goal, The Bombers never gave up, but they didntt have the tthorsef to cope with their GCL rivals. We can only hope the team will take up Stl Xavierls winning tradition next year. The new faculty gradually became acquainted with the layout, the frosh learned the meaning of Hjug, and the student body settled down for the nine- month grind. On the sport's scene, two tough teams were scheduled to clash with the new Bomber football squad. After falling to the up-state Canton Central Catholic 22-0, the Bomber gridmen rallied to defeat the favored Withrow Tigers 14-6. The dust was swept from Xavier's ttclosetsti to make way for the extra-curricular activities as each undertook its annual task of recruiting new members. The world-renowned Prep astonished the whole student body with its sudden switch from newspaper to magazine. A11 dedicated their yearis work during the Mass of the Holy Spirit, and the new term was officially begun. OCTOBER October began on a happy note. Fourteen Merit Schol- arship semi-finalists, a record number from St. Xavier, pre- pared for the final step in their ordealethe College Board tests. Father and Son Night at Central Stadium saw the defeat of the favored Woodward Bulldogs, 6-0. Phenom- enal defense and a last-minute rally pulled the game from a scoreless deadlock. It was at this time that the young Booster Club was beginning to prove itself as a real ttroot- er. Although the new 53 piece band faithfully pitched in with the uBomber Song and itAlexander's Rag Time Band, the Fates seemed to abandon the Xavier gridmen as they fumbled the last two games of the month-the first to Holmes, 7-0; and the second to McNicholas, 6-0. But why dwell on sad memories? Those dreaded quarterly exams crept up without warning, but the Halloween dance provided a pleasant farewell to a month of mixed emotions. NOVEMBER The first half of November saw the fateful climax of a losing season for the Xavier eleven. The ominous grin of three top-iiight GCL teams was too much for the team to face in the span of fifteen days. Lest the walls of Jerico tumble, only a minimum number of pep rallies were per- mitted during the course of the season. One such tigather- ingli preceded the GCL double-header with Purcell, but the high-ranking Cavaliers were not to be swayed. Next was the heart breaker with Elder, 14-6, and the final Bacon romp 38-0. But the Final banquet at the Netherlandh Pa- vilion Caprice was the perfect tranquilizer for a team that fought hard despite all odds. With football gone, basket- ball was the Hthingu on Sycamore Street. Intramural com- petition became the spectacle of spectacles during the lunch hour as contestants vied for supremacy and glory. The yearly retreats started once again out at Milford, the debaters journeyed to Detroit, the new Student Council swung into action, and many seniors pitted themselves against Xavier psychology tests. As the month drew to an end, the Thanksgiving holidays, with all their dances and gourmet meals, temporarily closed the school doors. DECEMBER December began. with the Jesuit Inter-Scholastic Latin contest, which drew creditable results from the classical whizzes. The basketball season followed with a sneak pre- view at the Cincinnati Gardens. The following weekend, the Bombers dropped their first two contests to Central and Louisville, but recovered after a five day rest to de- feat Taft and Taylor. Vocation talks for coliegiate-minded seniors began as the realization of graduation drew near. The Alumni Dance was held this year at the Topper Club in Music Hall. The French theme, the Dauphine, and the enjoyable music provided an evening of pure pleasure. The pranksters of Cincinnati chose December this year to be the month of their yearly bomb scare at Xavier. But their explosives have not yet become a reality. The long- awaited Christmas holidays finally arrived and made the necessary break in academic exertion. All activities did not cease however, for the Sodality held its annual ice- skating party and Xavier went to the N.I.T. across the river. It was a WhiteleSS Christmas. JANUARY Classes resumed on January 4th. The famed fortune- teller, Nostradamus, met his fateful downfall when the earth, contrary to expectations, refused to be destroyed. But everything proceeded on schedule at Xavier. Practice for the school play, The Caine Mutiny,u began in the senior lounge, and the unsung'i stage crew set to work building the sets in the gym. Mr. OiHalloran originated a tiFine Arts Club to further an appreciation of the higher aspects of human culture. The new club, with its almost unlimited activities, has met with great success. The Mid-west Jesuit Province exams arrived in the middle of the month. but they stayed in town only three days before being sent back The tests were followed by a mid-semester breakethe seniors took a week off and the underclass- men made their yearly retreat, January was a fair month for sports. The basketball team defeated Covington Cath- olic, Elder, Bacon, and Newport; but lost two heart- break- erswPurcell and McNicholas. And the swimming team capped the month with a first in the Princeton Invitational Tournament. FEBRUARY February began the second semester, which very often saw the seniors in the gymnasium listening to a speaker from one of the various Mid-west colleges. It was a time of decisions and applications as each pondered the problems and possibilities of higher education. The debaters, our Hgolden-tongued ambassadors of good will,u took a trip to Urbana, while back at school a new chess tournament got underway. The Sodality held its annual dance this year at the Xavier Armory. The Paradise Lostn turned out to be a Paradise regained. On the 28th, Xaviefs musical Mu- sicians journeyed to Taft High School auditorium for the yearis rendition of the Musicade. February saw the im- pressive climax of scheduled basketball. The quintet, after losing to Elder, rebounded to defeat Hughes, Purcell, Wil- liam Grant, and Bacon, a victory which earned them a co- championship in the GCL. The final game with Chaminade was an anticlimactic loss, 57,55. MARCH March 2nd was Ash Wednesday, the beginning of the Lenten season. It was a month of basketball tournaments. Xavier lost the opener to McNicholas in high school com- petition, which eventually led to the supremacy of West- ern Hills. U. C. lost to California and allowed Ohio State to win the NCAA; and Bradley came out on top in the N.I,Ti The banquet at the Pavilion Caprice put the finish- ing touch on a fair season. Most valuable player was Jim OlKeefe. Brains and brawn were once again united when the aqua-bombers and the debaters traveled to Columbus to argue and swim. The juniors took the Merit Scholarship tests with visions of scholarships dancing in their heads. The Elocution-Oratorical contest was won this year by Tom Eagen and Dave Schmid; and the school play, the itCaine Mutiny Court Martial,n was executed with professional precision. Toward the end of March, the third quarter exams arrived; but it didn't seem to make much diEerence, because Elvis had. just been released from the Army, APRIL This April, like all Aprils, began with nonsense and uFOOL'tishness. One student even came to school with a fake broken arm. But there was no foolishness for the baseball, tennis, and golf teams as they began practice for a rough spring season. It was a strange month for the weather man with snow and freezing temperatures one day and convertible weather the next, but nothing could dissuade the students from selling May Fete books. The preliminary tests for the State finals in Oxford were ad- ministered to enthusastic hopefuls Midhmonth provided a short Easter vacation, which was followed by the Junior Promea prelude of senior life for the third year men. Opening day, April 12th, launched another hopeful season for a team which needed a great deal of hope. But most hopes at this time were directed toward that summer vacation which was lurking just around the corner. MAY Outside the air was warm and the sun was shining, distractions were many, and the merciless books seemed to demand endless attention. It was a difi'icult month for brainwork, but those who persisted were usually rewarded with exemptions. There was the May Fete, the free day, activity banquets, and perhaps the most important social event of the yeara-the Senior From. To the seniors, May meant graduation, diplomas, and farewells. But this year, May took on significances for the underclassmen also. It was something more than the last month of school a it was the good-by to itfriend which had served the youth of Cincinnati for over one hundred years. The friend had done his job well, but could no longer keep abreast of the times. Bring on the new. f 9s . 1 9:33! E FOUR YEARS AT ST. Ficks, omcial portrait pho- tographer for the X-Ray; Mr. William Shurr, moderator of the St. Xavier Camera Club; and Camera Club members Mike Mathers, Henry Meek, Dave OtToole, and especially Bob Strunk. 159 160 THE 1960 X-RAY The 1960 X-Ray is a result, not of the work of a few individuals, but rather the con- certed effort of the entire staff who all did their best to produce an accurate, interesting, and informative annual. Co-editors Jack McDonough and J erry Simmons carried the heaviest loads, since upon them rested the responsibility of putting out a top-Hight book. Sports editor Jack Overbeck and his assistant Fred Cloppert undertook the mammoth assignment of presenting a clear picture of the sports scene at St. Xavier. Torn Vitullo, Rich Peake and Bob Schwetschenau bore the brunt of the need for articles, while photographic editors Henry Meek and Bob Strunk, along with Mike Mathers and Dave O,Toole kept the X-Ray supplied With action and formal shots. A11 financial problems were ably handled by managing editor Rudy Hasl, J oe Creevy, and John Thesing. Moderator Mr. Vernon J. Ruland, Jack McDonough and Jerry Simmons would like to join the students and faculty in thanking the staff for whatever success this last tt7th and Sycamorett X-Ray merits.
