'U it Balmy winds, frequent thundershowers, the earlier appearance of the morning sun, tufts of green reappearing on the bare trees, -all these were clear signs of spring. They indicated that the school year was rapidly drawing to a close. The district tourna- ment and Basketball Banquet had been the signal to unpack baseballs and gloves, tennis racquets, golf clubs, and track shoes, as Xavier spring sportsmen prepared for competition. The debaters set out on the spring tournament trail in the hope of add- ing to their growing collection of trophies and awards. Only a few issues of the Xavier Prep remained to roll off the presses, while work on the school yearbook, the X-RAY, was all but completed. And, un- noticed by most students, Xavier's dra- matic and speech groups, orchestra, and glee club were hard at work preparing for the annual spring presentations, the school play and the Oratorical and Elocution Con- test. A hurried glance at the calendar re- vealed only one more month of school. Silence of retreat, spring sports in sight, the prom

The Christmas vacation and fun of the holi- day season were over, so once again, it was back to school. With only a few precious days remaining before the exams, we quickly settled down to the serious business of reviewing everything we had learned during the first semester. We filled our minds with equations, vocabulary words, grammar rules, names and dates until we thought we would fairly burst with all the knowledge. Then, the exams were over, and students and teachers alike breathed a sigh of relief. At this point, we took time out for the most important part of our year at Xavier, the annual student retreat. During these Lhree days we put aside all our activities 1nd, under the guidance of competent spiritual advisers, considered ourselves as ve really are, children of God with an :ternal destiny. We all left the retreat aetter Catholic young men, resolved to live our lives accordingly. prefaces the panic of exam preparation A I ' LAA, M P , ' ,,,. - - , 0 H - Q A .,,.. . -- 9

Our final few weeks at Xavier were, per- haps, the most enjoyable of all. The fresh new life of spring seemed to brighten us up. Most of our school work completed, we could afford to relax a little and enjoy the final activities of the year. The junior and senior proms, the big social events of the season, were nights we will not soon for- get. And who can measure the fun we had at the May Fete, or on our class picnic, when we ran until we dropped, and ate and drank until the sandwiches and pop dis- appeared. Finally the big moment toward which every Xavier student strives-grad- uation! How long we will remember the Mass and breakfast together at school, the commencement exercises at the Heldhouse, the congratulations, words of advice and encouragement! Yes, the newness of fresh- man year, the relative insignificance of the sophomore, the pleasantness of being juniors, and the thrill experienced in senior year when we become Xavier men, these we will long remember.
