K' llg eniord Most of what we would like to tell you about our four years here cannot be described by ordinary prose-or, for that matter, poetry. We have lived in an atmosphere where we have grown from boyhood to manhood, where our minds have been besieged by an orderly progression of mental disciplines, where our bodies achieved a resiliency, in intra-mural as well as varsity sports, which the participant can feel but not point out. This, as we say, is hard to describe. Could we accurately point out what a help it was to begin our day with Mass and Communion ? What a comfort the confessional has been to us these years ? But here is our section of the annual -where we, the seniors, tell our story. High school days have ended, but not their memory. What recollections and reminiscences this X-RAY will recall years from now as we squint, through eyes no longer keen, at the old gang and the familiar haunts. However, the future is afar. Let us look now at the past and the present. THROUGH THESE DOORS . IN 1947 CARROLL H. AHLERS DAVID A. ALLEN RICHARD J. ALLEN THOMAS W. APKING PAUL E. ARMBRUSTER MORAND J. BACH THOMAS J. BALL GEORGE A. BAUER 5. .,. Four years ago, in Russia, Stalin assured us peace in Europe by compromise. In China, the Nationalists captured Yenan, the red capital. In Europe, peace treaties were con- cluded with five Axis satellites. In America, Marshall inaugurated the American contribution toward peace-The Marshall Plan. Meanwhile, at a secret meeting in Poland, nine European countries revived the Com- munist lnternational. The newly formed Cominform pledged to fight American Imperialism. In downtown Cincinnati, a hundred and fifty of us filled out registration applications, slowly battling with last name first bIanks. Our arms loaded with new books, we thought only of the new life we were entering. World affairs didn't concern us os they: now do. We were anxiously awaiting our first day of high school - the day we came, for the first time, through the doors of St. Xavier's. Il8 W' e Came, WILLIAM R. BECKER JOHN J. BETSCHER Wondering ROBERT G. At first the infant . . Then the whining school-boy, with his satchel And shining morning face, creeping like snail Unwilling to school. William Shakespeare, As You Like It So spoke Shakespeare, undoubtedly referring to the lad's first contact with school. For the underclassman, the story has changed. He is still somewhere between the second and third stage. 'Above the age of whining, no longer does he creep to school, but comes by bus or car from all parts of Cincinnati His enthusiasm and vigor is contagious, whether he be on the volleyball court during noon hour or in the library after school. His confidence begins to get boundless. Small problems are gigantic, but he can always manage an answer. Still there is one heavy cloud under which he lives - he is not yet a senior! el 5:5 M. .5 fel A 3 71 --E 79 ,,T, W! The League of the Sacred Heart has a twofold purpose: one, of reparation for the outrages committed against the Savior of the world, the other, that of spiritualizing all the thoughts, words, and actions of the day by offering them to the Sacred Heart. ln 1951, the league at Xavier, in cooperation with the sodality, obtained large pictures of the Sacred Heart for each classroom. After the official consecration of each room to the Sacred Heart, the whole school was consecrated by Very Rev. William J. Schmidt, S.J. League promoters attend league benediction of the Blessed Sacrament on alternate Thursdays, pass out Sacred Heart leaflets, and endeavor to learn and promote devotion to Christ in the League of the Sacred Heart. 62 anc t1 et jus tl In answer to Our l.ady's request at Fatima, on each First Satur- day, Xavier students attend the Fatima devotions, after which hrcakfost is served. The l95l X-RAY staff provided good ex- amples of these characteristics. After the book had been publicized and sold by the staff salesmen, with the assistance of freshman Clayton Schnetzer, sophs Don Calahan, Charlie Shoenberger, and Bob Manley, actual work was begun. Most of the layout and design was done by Ed Moran and Tony Damico with the guidance of Mr. Cahill, S. J., Moderator. Busi- ness details throughout the year were handled by John Moorman. Tony Damico provided a variety of cartoons, while Jack Glaser could be seen at all the school events, Camera in hand and flash bulbs popping out of all pockets. Here the Moderator and staff of the l95l X-RAY wish to express their gratitude to all who have cooperated in the production of the annual, Mr. Norman M, Bush and Mr. Daniel McTamney of Shillito's Photo-Reflex Studio were generous with their assistance. Mr, Paul E. Gosiger of the Schultz-Gosiger Engraving Company and Mr. William Brinker of the Brinker Printing Company have our thanks for the personal, careful way in which they handled the engraving and printing. Working with these men was always a pleasure. Our thanks, also, to the Principal St. Xavier faculty, especially Gedeon, SJ., for his aid in the many patrons, sponsors, and members af Mr. Thomas W, photography, to and advertisers, and to the entire student body which partici- pated in an unparalleled way in making this a genuine student production. Xavier's line looked good against a powerful and favored Western Hills as it repeatedly held West Hi on the goal line. Be- tween the twenty-yard stripes Xavier's offense was good enough, but not sufficiently powerful to score. The game ended in a O - O deadlock. In five of the next games, Xavier tied Hughes and Flaget, lost by one point to Withrow and Hamilton Catholic, and by seven to Purcell. A victory over Walnut Hills, 25-0, broke the tie and one-point-loss string. Against Withrow, Xavier sparkled in the second half after a lethargic first half. Led by the running and passing of Charlie O'Leary, the Bombers pushed over two rapid touchdowns and were threatening another in the last minutes. The first victory of the year was over Walnut Hills. The following week the Bombers lost to Hamilton Catholic in a rainy battle. O'Leary's runs brought Xavier within a point of Hamilton. But the pass for extra points was incomplete. In Louisville, it looked as if the Bombers' fortunes were changing. Jack Morse had sprinted across for a touchdown to grab a 7 -O lead as time began to run out. But favored Flaget came back with a quick touchdown to tie the game. Then came the annual doubleheader at Xavier Uni- versity. Purcell, though it had lost some of the previous season's power, pushed across a touchdown which was to be the margin of victory. The Bombers fought hard - operating from both the single-wing and if-formation - but could not cross the muddy goal ine. Elder had too much power for the Bombers as the men from Price Hill fought to a 25 - O victory. The season closed with a seven point defeat, I3 - 6, inflicted by Newport Catholic. Paul Wurzelbacher, sophomore mite, scored the touchdown. Tackle Art Broering re- ceived a trophy for the outstanding individual per- formance of the game. The Bacon game, to be played the next week, was cancelled because of rain. The l950-5l season was unusual - one victory, three ties, two one-point losses, two one-touchdown losses, and one notable 25-O loss. Only a few points separated the Bombers from a very creditable season. In l95l - 52 ? Not too much can be said as yet. Many regulars will be gone. They will be hard to replace. But lineman like Pat Conners and Mike Rohs, and backfield men like Cliff Coloumbe, Howie Poweleit and George Corridan, with the experience of this year, can brighten the football horizon. Coach Von Holle deserves plaudits for a good season. But most of all he deserves praise for his wholesome, manly influence on his players. lf the Bomber's l95l- 52 record matches the character of Coach Von Holle, Xavier will be unbeaten. BASKETBALL Minus the entire starting lineup of l95O, the varsity basketball squad needed testing to clarify its potenti- alities. After a normal start - with high and low points throughout the regular season - the Bombers got into the district tournament. Here the squad shone. Beating West Hi in the first game, the Bombers eased past Central Vocational and into the semi-finals against Bacon. The boys from Xavier played a good game, but powerful Bacon was still unbeaten at game's end. The past season forebodes well for next year. With Captain .lim O'Connell, high-scorer this year, Dan Wenstrup, Howie Poweleit, and Jack Morse returning, the varsity should show an experienced quintet. Big Al Sicking, Mike Guenther, Ray Mazza, Roy Herbort, and Jack Holmes - with seasoning and hard work - should add depth to the varsity team. The i952 Reserve team should definitely be strong, judging from last year's frosh squad. Hard-working Tom Budde, frosh high-scorer, Larry Dillon and Cap- tain Bill Kenney are among the frosh standouts. iill iilii l BASEBALL Top Row: Jim Tully, Bob Boehner, Don Wenstrup, Vince Russo, Norm Harland. In the United States today, 173 million conversations daily speed over 152 million miles of wire con- necting 43 million telephones. First regarded as a mere toy, the telephone in the U.S. today is a 'l'l billion dollar business, owned by almost a million stockholders and provides jobs for three-quarters of a million persons. The industry is big because America is big and requires a huge communi- cations system to keep the wheels of commerce, and society generally, running smoothly and swiftly - yet its cost is low, within the reach of most families. This is just a typical American success story, possible only under our system of free enterprise which permits free men and women to exercise individual initiative.
