ACTION NCJW And the Pope hos cost his orms obrood for ogony ond loss, And colled the kings of Christendom for swords obout the Cross. Lepanto, G. K. Chesterton THE 1949 X-RAY ST. XAVIER HIGH SCHOOL CINCINNATI 2, OHIO W f , y , 4 4 f ff af f ,M f' ' 110 Q7 K 3 ff 1 ffmvff f S HOLINESS, THE POPE, URGES US TO ACTION On all sides, indeed, it is a sad spectacle that awaits us. For in every part of the world we can descry great numbers of men greatly disturbed, anxious as to their fate, tormented with tearful misgivings, that seem to hint at still more frightful things to come. The present time demands Catholics without tear. We have thought long enough. The time has come for action now! Pius Xll , HE 675 STUDENTS OF ST. XAVIER HIGH, RESPOND TO THE CALL OF THE PQPE Pius XII is the Vicar of Christ on earth. He can lead us to victory over the enemies of that better world of tomorrow we dream of inhabiting. We shall not rest until each one of us has spent himself in laboring with the Holy Father to make Gocl once again the goal of all human action. ff , A f X f 1 if Wm f I v V 79 Q ' f M., ww if H fr ,ff , f 4 lf A 4' W ,, ff f W mf 7 , .4m,,j,. Budde, Mr, Fred B. Ausdenmoore and Mr. Robert K. Chandler. DADS' CLUB St. Xavier has never considered the prepo- ration of tomorrow's active Catholics its exclusive function. lt has always realized that close cooperation between home and school is essential to the proper, integral training of Catholic apostles. The Dads' Club has met monthly with the faculty to discuss the spiritual and academic progress of St. Xavier students. Meetings regularly featured a faculty or guest speaker who spoke on topics of vital interest to the Dads. The High School leans heavily on the fathers of its students, and they have generously supported it, in ways too numerous to men- tion, throughout the year. Mr. Fred B. Ausdenmoore President of the Dads' Club OFFICERS: First Row: Mrs. YValter T. Hart, Mrs. Edwin C. Van Leunen, Mrs. Lawrence C. Budde, Mrs. Herman H. Wordeman, Mrs. WValter C. Boeckley. Second Row: Mrs. Harry L. Fehr, Mrs. Fred B. Ausdenmoore, Mrs. XValter F. Somerville, Mrs. Louis A. Bunning, and Mrs. Frank H. Klernan. MOTH ERS' CLUB Closely cooperating with the Dads' Club the Mothers of St. Xavier students have also met monthly with the faculty at the High School. Like the Fathers, they have through- out the year given active support, unfailing support, to the school. The Christmas party, card parties, the May Fete, all held for the benefit of St. Xavier, are just a few of their activities. Mothers look forward to their meetings on the first Monday of the month. At each meeting they hear a featured speaker, attend Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament, have conferences with the faculty, and are served refreshments afterwards in the school cafeteria. Only letter winners in varsity sports are eligible for membership. The purpose ot the group is to stimulate greater interest in school activities, es- pecially in those connected with athletics. The group aided Father Berdan, S.J,, Mr. Washer, and Mr. Weiler immensely in promoting an athletic rattle which helped finance the All- Sports Banquet on March l3. INTRAMURALS Another interesting and successful intramural program attracted student attention daring noon periods of the past school year. Class 4C, which also had many ot its members on varsity teams, was the school champion in both volleyball and basketball. On December 9, -4C, boasting a season's record ot 20 wins and 6 losses, overpowered ZA, which previously had won 27 and lost 2, to gain the school volleyball championship. INTRAMURALS lContinuedl During the winter months, the scene of intramural activity shifted indoors to the hardwood. When the regulation basket- ball season closed, 4C and 33, each with 9-and-l records, were tied for first place in the Senior League, while ZE, lC, and 2B were tied in the Junior League with 9-and-2 records. ln a series of play-off games, 4C and 2E earned the championships in their respective leagues. In a two-out-of-three champion- ship series, the fighting, determined sophomores from 2E forced 4C to go the limit before the latter was crowned school champion. Outstanding hoopsters in the individual years were Dave l-lils MCD, Pat Brown C3Bl, Torn Geise QED, and Jim O'Connell UCD. ln the regulation season the high scorers were: O'Connell UCD - 60 points, l-lils C40 - 59, and Bob Sunderman C4El - 57.
