Many of our boys felt wounded there at the Virgin,s feet, and poured out their last, as Our Lord had done, under the compassionate eyes of the Btessecl Mother. That bloody war, in which ail these brave men died for their country, was declared on December 8, 1941, on the feast of the Immaculate Conception. For almost four years. it vent its fury upon the world, and men of all nar tions and creeds took up arms and struggtect desperately for supremacy. Surety Mary, the patroness of the United States. watched with especial care the boys fighting be- neath the red. white. and blue. And we can Feet. with equal certainty, that Our Ladv was a powertut hetp-mate in bringing to an end a war which cost the lives of so many of her sons. Therefore, we take this last, yet most appropriate 0C- casion, to otter our sincere thanks to all those alumni of St. Xavier High School. who died in the service or their country. To them we gratefully dedicate this yearbook the X-Ray of 1946. And in so doing. we beseech the Holy Mother of God to look down with kindness and pity on these Xavier boys. now departed, and to raise them up from the scarred and bloody battlefields to a higher place where there is no sorrow. no pain. no death. Therefore, we of the Senior Class have composed this book with an eye upon sincerity and honesty. We hope that it will serve in future years as a reminder of the many fond thoughts. higheminded hopes. and rich ideals that permeate our hearts as we prepare to depart from the guid- ing light of this great Jesuit School. In addition it is our foremost wish that this year's edi- tion of the XeRay will aliequately salute the school that we have come to know so WeUHa school so rich in tradi- tion, so lofty in purpose. Page l3 A Message by the President to the Senior Body . . . Our pilots are no longer tiodging ach-ach as they Hy 0n missions over German soit: our sailors no longer scan the horizon of the South Pacitic for the dread pitt hoxes of hostile Japs. Our country is again at peace and industry is gradually reconverting to peace time needs. he im- mediate future bids tair to he an era of opportunity for young men of intelligence, industry, and vision. Prospects toot: hright anct encouraging to the graduates of this year. The graduates of the 1946 class of St. Xavier High School will either continue their academic training in cot- teges anct universities or they Witt enter the scene of life as workers and wage earners. It the former, let them choose an institution of teaming where the principle 0t right and wrong which they tearnt during their high schoot years will not he contradicted, hut Cherished and fostered. It the latter. let them enter the arena of tite. having on the hreast-ptate of faith. their feet shod in justice, and carry- ing in their hands the weapons of righteousness and char ity. Our country is at peace: yet there is hatred and envy. bitterness and vindictiveness in the heart; sin and vicious principles are attied to frustrate the blessings of peace or turn peace into a mockery. There is. need for men with a highly cultivated sense of what is right and wrong. a sense of right and wrong sutticientty refined anti ctetinite enough to make them effective instruments in the morat and spirit- uat reconstruction 0t society: a sense of right anct wrong that is supported by a faith contirmed in content, refined in motive. buttressed in sanction through the tuifiiting revelation at Christ. There is need for graduates of St. Xavier High School who will remain true to the traditions of their Alma Ntater. Page 14 THE PR .-SIDENT REND AIARSIIALL L. I Pagu l 3 Faculty RM: PATRICK V. 'Short conversations, courteous sharing of party lines, being sure of your number before calling, and similar practices are essential to good telephone service. We in the telephone industry are constantly striving to pro- vide a high quality system to serve the needs of our community, but the degree of satisfaction the service affords depends much on how it is used.
