This is the high point of spiritual training for Xavier Seniors, their three-day retreat at the Jesuit Retreat House at Milford. Reception of Candidates Early in the school year, the Sodality of Mary prepared to add another year to its traditions. Every morning at the altar Calvary is ttlntroibo ad altare Dei.' renewed in the Divine Sacrifice. This hour is the heart of Xavier's school day, and no one shares more intimately in its treasures than our servers. At the altar, they not only represent the laity, in making the responses, but substitute for the clerics who bear the name itAcolyteh by title of Minor Orders. They of all students, in virtue of their office and. of their presence at the altar, are closest to Christ and to His priest. In the Middle Ages, when sculptors, archi- tects, painters, tradesmen, statesmen, and students of universities, all formed one great choir, lay participation in the Mass and other functions of the Liturgy was at its highest. It has been the heart's desire of the last three Popes who took the name Pius, that this cor- porate praise of God in song, be everywhere revived. The members of the Choir have been answering that desire. Left to Right. First Row: John White, Lawrence Janszen, Charles Weber, Donald Glaser. Lawrence Lampe. Emphasis on prayer brought many to Mass and Communion for the Jesuit Missionaries laboring in India. Toward the end of the year, a. discussion group on the Mass was begun with a view of under- standing the greatest of prayers and to widen the prayer horizon of each member. This yeafs spirit of Sacrifice carried on the beautiful tradition that has always been a great part of a school with the name of Xavier. Page 66 Page 67 3mm Glad Limited to ten Seniors and one Junior who desire to further their knowledge of the fine arts, the Chesterton Club opened its discussions this year with the life and works of Dr. Samuel Johnson and con- tinued with authors and novels of each period of English Literature up to the present. Poetry and poets were the main topics during the second semester. The ntakeup and art of poetry, music, sculpture, painting and architecture were of prime importance. From this the members learned how to appreciate and judge these branches of art. The Catholic influence on the writers was stressed and shown through their works. Another feature that drew attention of the students was the smash- ing editorial on reading and writing. Changed also this year was the format of the paper. The old two- column style was replaced by avthree-column form thatiemployed full-page headlines. The general improvement and modernization of the ttKampus Kapers', was due almost entirely to the timely suggestions, untiring efforts, and excellent advice of Father John L. The effective setting was the result chiefly of the work of stage manager Robert Ellis. The St. Xavier Bands continue to live up to the high standards set by the bands of previous years. They contributed their share of color to the football games and to various other special occasions. As before, its chief aim was the fostering of interest in model building la useful interest at all times but especially so in war timesl. The club was not very active during the first part of the year, chiefly because the group was largely made up of Freshmen unacquainted with the clubls procedure. Of late, it has become more active, and is now conducting a contest, which will continue late into the school year and, according to all indications, will prove a great success. 3w OFFICERS Dr. J. The Father's Club again sponsored: a Skating Party, the annual never-to-be-forgotten AII-Xavier Moonlight Boat Ride on the Ohio, at Boxing Night for the benefit of the under-grads, and assisted the Mothers' Club in the May Fete, at which Mr. J . Harry Moore very capably fulfilled the arduous tasks of May Fete chairman. Page 78 Malheu In its customary role, the Motherst Club continues to cooperate at all times with the faculty in its earnest endeavor to instill in the boys that feeling of understanding, loyalty and Catholic action, which have become so necessary at this trying period. During the past year. the Mothers, Club has given a Student Dance, Card Parties, and in conjunction with the Fathers, Club sponsors the May Pete, the pro- ceeds of these undertakings making possible various improvements. During the season of 1941-42 there has been organized a Red Cross Unit for the purpose of sewing, knitting, making of surgical dressings and also a class for First-Aid instructions. When the first game of the season with Hamilton Catholic came around, Coach McCann had fashioned a formidable team; and the Conquerors, led by Co-Captains Yee and Heringer swept on to a 32-0 victory. Invading Covington Holmes. St. Xavier won the second game of the season, 13-6, in a very hard fought battle on a rainsoaked field. The next opponent was Norwood, and the Conquerors hard charging line and fast backfield won handily 36-0. Riding on the crest of four victories, St. Xavier finally met defeat at the hands of a heavy Dayton Fairview team 12-0. Although they lost this game, the Conquerors rolled up 12 first downs to none for Dayton Rebounding from this defeat, St. Xavier hit the peak form of the season and. crushed a supposedly strong Roger Bacon team 34-0. Playing in the annual Catholic League Double Header, St. X defeated an inspired Purcell u em II team 13-0. On Thanksgiving morning St. X crossed the river and and skinnecl the Bellevue Tigers 7-0. Then came the heartbreaking 0-6 defeat at the hands of our Catholic League rivals, Elder. This game was bitterly contested, and the tide turned against Xavier when an Elder back, in punt formation, missed a bad pass from center, picked up the ball and ran 75 yards for a touchdown. The season was very successful from a percentage standpoint, 7 out of 9 games won. But we feel sure that with a few breaks Coach McCann would have led his team to an undefeated season and a Cham- pionship. usingle fawnwhae' Charles Shiels. Combin- ing the returning lettermen with the best of last year,s reserve material, he fashioned a cool, scrappy team, that barely missed the championship when it lost the two most important games with the Champions, Purcell, by the slim margins of one point and two points. Co-Captains Bob Mullee and Charley Rieckel- man led the team with unfailing spirit. Mullee, high scorer in the league, and nRed Gilligan, a dependable guard always and a flashy ball handler, won All-City honors. These sentences contain all the fundamental sounds in the English language that have anything to do with the intensity of sound in speech. By listening to them, by measuring the accuracy with which each sound is carried over the wire, engineers test the quality of the transmitter, This is only a small example of the work at Bell Labora- toriesl There, research is carried on constantly in the interest of the telephone user . . . experimenting, test- ing, figuring out ways to create new equipment or to improve present methods. .
