'lE'N ,N- Honor Society The Honor Society as usual performed many important duties around school. Moderated by Brother Edward Driscoll and Mr. William Ballard, the Society's most important function was the tutoring program that offered help to students having difficulties with their studies. Throughout the year its members served as teacher's aids, ushers at the open-houses, helpers on orientation days, and as helpers during the entrance test. The Society also found time to take several interesting side trips. The debaters were led throughout the year by Dreux Dwyer and Guy Campisano. This duo compiled a very successful record last season. Included in their outstanding record was a second place finish in the Kentucky District Tournament and advancement to the quarter-final round of the Kentucky State Tournament. Also turning in exceptional performances were Keefe Montgomery and David Klimchak who won at Richmond. Mark Bryan and Jim Wolfe added to the year by finishing second in T.V. debating. It was the same story for the speakers. The speakers were led by Charlie Whalen and Hal Haering. Also turning in fine efforts throughout the season were Dreux Dwyer, Bob Hess, Steve Fairfax, and Wally Cybriwsky. Rewards for this great season were 29 first- place trophies, 26 second-place trophies, and 22 third-place trophies. In the Louisville Regional and Kentucky State Tournaments the team won 29 Superior Ratings. Moderators for the team were Br. George, Miss Rapier, Mr. Hardt and Br. Kenney. The season began with tive straight victories and the offense was almost scoring at will. The league championship was well within reach. But a plague of iniuries to key players resulted in a loss to Trinity and ties against both Atherton and New Albany. Health returned though, as did the Tiger's explosive scoring punch, in time for the State Tournament. The Tigers quickly disposed of Moore, Thomas Jefferson, and Henry Clay to reach the finals with Trinity. Overwhelming underdogs, the Tigers trailed 2-0 at the end of three quarters. But spirit and determination lifted the offense as they crossed the muddy goal line three times in the final minutes to capture the Title. Led by sophomore Dave Buechler Mthl and seniors Chuck Magera lbthl and Mark Markwell l7thl, the team outran all opponents to take the Regional Title for the second year in a row. St. X. sent seven runners on to the State Meet with high hopes of repeating as State Champions. Fine individual efforts were turned in by Chuck Magera who finished fifth and Dave Buechler who finished fifteenth but the team effort fell short for one of the few times this year as St. X. took third place in the overall standings. Perhaps graduating seniors feel bad that they failed to capture the State Title but the fine records of both the Junior Varsity and Freshman teams assure St. X. of fine representation in cross country in the future. Despite all their strengths, the team finished second to Trinity in the Regional competition. Highpoints included Regional championships for Denny Passafiume and Mike Chandler, plus runner-up finishes by Marty Clark, Denny Ogburn and Steve Huber. St. X. sent seven grapplers to State competition this year. These included Denny Passafiume, Steve Hess, David Sauer, Marty Clark, Denny Ogburn, Steve Huber, and Mike Chandler. Wrestling is basically an individualistic sport but the team effort is what wins ar loses matches. l ABOVE: Mark Wahle sets himself for a match and concentration reigns supreme. LEFT: John Clements, a standout for St. X, in the lightweight division strains against an opponent. 111 In the capable hands of Brother Giles and his coaching staff, the strength, agility, and overall ability of the team greatly increased. The number of representatives from this year's team in the State Tournament is testimony to this fact. The fine records of both the Junior Varsity and Freshman teams assure St. X. of champions in the future as wrestling continues to grow in popularity. But these were followed by a victory at Atherton and the final regular season record was l-3-I . This perhaps dismal record should not cloud the efforts of the team in the State Meet. There, the swimmers racked up a total of 81 points and a fine sixth place finish. Mike Powell took third place in the 100 yard Butterfly and other good performances were turned in by Andy Moore, Mark Mobley, John Dougherty, John Duckwell, Leo Miller, Dave Hall, and Mark Buese. Nevertheless, this year's Golf Team brought home several team awards as well as fine performances by individuals. A blazing round in the Regional competition gave senior Doug Miller the Individual Regional Title and helped St. X. to take the second-place team award. The fine showing in the Regional gave the team high hopes for a State Title. Excellent scores were turned in by both Doug Miller and Bill Ogden but the team had to settle for a third-place finish in the overall standings. Senior Prom Prom night 1973 was yet another monumental moment in the lives of the men of St. X. 220 X-men and their dates occupied the shimmering Crystal Ballroom ofthe Brown Educational Center, between nine and one A.M. The seniors danced their brief hours away to the music of Jerry Kirk and the Heavyweights. As the students filed out at l o'cIock each smiled secretly at the knowledge that they had been part ofa unique experience. For the Senior prom is the milestone signifying both the end of high school and the beginning of adult life. I , 'V , ' v xx ..,,: . w , . QT, W .F . Y? 313 if Q ? Q 'fi ,f -' WL 52: fee, U w f .
