Watching you grow from the timid, immature Fresh- man to the polished, man-of-affairs Senior has given us all sorts of pleasure., We gloried in the success that was yours, sympathized with you when failure greeted your efforts. We saw your love for the Green and Gold increase and expand with the passing years. We re- joiced at the realization that you were adding to your stature - spiritually, mentally, physi- cally. . Yes, knowing you meant a great deal to us. Class discussions, informal arguments, idle chatter about this and that-theyill be cherished memories to which we'll cling. For we shan't forget you, you know. The interest we had in you as a St. X. student will continue long after your graduation. We shall always take a tremendous pride in your achieve- ments and we sincerely hope that the friendship we formed with you will endure. May God watch over you on your journey through life. You are leaving the safe and al- 12 most cloistered world of the classroom for a bitter and disillusioned world of sorrow and strife. Love has been rejected in favor of Hate. God has been cast aside. Religion has been made a mockery. HOLD FAST TO YOUR IDEALS! Live a Catholic life in the Catholic way. Let the spirit of Mother Church direct and animate you. Make Catholicism a dynamic force to vital- ize each and all of your actions. LOVE GOD! Only in God will you find the answer to the questions that will perplex and trouble you. All our best wishes go with you. You will be remembered daily in our prayers. May the good God bless you and keep you-always! -THE ST. Augustine - St. Xavier 57 SEPTEMBER 23rd-Before a cheering capacity crowd at Maxwell Field, the St. Xavier Tigers blew the lid off the 1944 football campaign with a resounding 57-0 explosion over a courage- ous but out-manned St. Augustine eleven-an eighteen man squad from Lebanon .... The season got off to a good start as quarter back Jeep Quire, on the first signal play of the year, skirted right end for 50 yards and a touchdown-beautifully dodging would-be tacklers. . . . A moment later, on the second signal play, Bill Hunckler plunged over guard from the two for another score after the X. linemen had smothered a St. Augustine punt on that mark .... From there on it was a romp .... The other touchdowns were scored by Weis, Clark, Hunckler, Donovan, Yunt, and Kamenish C29 . . . The Green offense possessing a glittering Gold polish tabbed 7 first downs, besides her touchdowns, to 3 for St. Augustine . . . She carried the ball 23 times for 277 yards averag- ing 121A . . . She amazed all in completing 5 of 7 passes Cfour for touchdowns, one for a first downl for 110 yards and an average of 22 yards .... C. R. Bauer Frank Breslin Gene Detenber 1 88 SWAMP ST. AUGUSTINE, RUSSELLVILLE 14 New Albany - Si. Xavier 12 OCTOBER 6th-The Green of St. Xavier re- tained its lustrous Gold polish as another fighting Tiger fell to New Albany 14-12 . . . The victory was as narrow as the score indi- cates for a courageous Tiger was making a brilliant comeback down to the gun .... New Albany received 2 breaks in the first half as it early scored twice, when 35 yards of penalties carried to X's one and on an in- tercepted pass .... On these occasions St. X. showed great defensive strength, as the Bull- dogs were forced to use 4 downs in pushing across the scores .... The 2nd half was all St. X., as with a sparkling running attack-re- juvenated by injured Quire's return to the game-she punched across 2 tallies .... Ham- ilton scored on a 2 yard buck and Hunckler on a beautiful delayed reverse around end for 23 yards near the end .... Both extras missed. Statistics show both team evenly matched: 7 first downs counted for eachg New Albany gained 110 yards on 33 tries for a 3 yard average and St. X. rushed 128 yards on 35 for an average of 316 yards .... Lose to New Albany 0 Russellville - Si. Xavier 51 SEPTEMBER 30th-The Bengals continued to romp, over Russellville 51-0, as Kiwanis Sportsman Award Trophy winner halfback Bob Hamilton passed and ran St. X. to all but one of her eight touchdowns . . . The Green and Gold again counted a marker on the initial play of the game, but this time she also finished the same way, by scoring on the last play. Hamilton raced around right end for 66 yards for the first touchdown, and passed to end Bill Hatzell from the foe's ten for the last . . . The other touchdowns were taken across by Hamilton, once more, and Jim Karibo on running plays of 7 and 24 yards respectively, while the remaining five came from the passing arm of Hamilton . . . Receiv- ing the scoring tosses were: Donovan-All State End-17 yardsg Captain Gene Detenber 625, 28 and 10 yards, Kamenish, 24 yards, and Hatzell . . . The Tigers made 10 first downs to the Panthers' lg ran the ball 29 times for 221 yards-7113 yards per try, completed 10 of 15 passes for 156 yards for 15176 per toss . . . The game was tense and exciting all the Way With both Catholic schools battling hard .... Corning from behind 7-6, Jeep tucked in the kickoff after the Elder score and galloped 80 yards behind beautiful blocking, using the interference as only Quire can, to score . . . This made it 12-7, but X iced the game 19-7 in the third on a pretty 40 yard snag by Donovan on Bob I-lamilton's flip .... St. X. tallied first in the initial frame rushing the ball to the.8, .whence C. R. Bauer bucked over . . . A pass from Ranz to Hirth produced Elder's score in the secondg the last Elder threat coming in the middle of the fourth on a 33 yard touchdown interception .... A The game was thrillingg especially due to iirst Elder's and then St. Xavier's successive quick come-backs when behind and Elder's last quarter threat . . . However, the Green and Gold held as usual and they came out on top .... Curl Geiser Sylvester Grant Bob Hamilton 90 jeep Quire seeks the great, en spacer in the Male 1 LOSE T0 MALE, MANUAL . . . Win At Expense of Elder 25 Male - Si. Xavier 6 OCTOBER 14th-Under a hot, beating sun at Manual Stadium Male defeated the Tigers 25-6 for the 17th time in the 21 game-old series . . . Two blocked punts were the deter- mining factors .... With the count 6-6 at the first stop, in the middle of the second, Yancy and Vonnahme slapped down successive attempted boots by Augie Kauifmann on the 25 and 31g and Smith pounced on them in the end zone . . . Both were on the fourth down and Augie was too close to the big Male line . . . The halftime count was 19-6. Male scored first on McDermott's 73 yard scamp, but X came back when Breslin block- ed a Purple kick on the 7 yard line and Og- burn caressed it . . . Hamilton passed to Jeep to the 1 and then crashed over for the tally . . . Male was offside on the first endeavor, but both Kauffmann's conversions failed. 13 Manual - St. Xavier 6 OCTOBER 28th-Again it was a blocked punt which caused the Tigers difficulty, as Manual tallied by a one touchdown margin 13 6 The Crimsons, tooted to swamp the Green and Gold by 3 or 4 touchdowns, met stiff re- sistance all the way at the hands of a smart and confident defense by the Bengals . . . And everyone of the 6,000 present was electrified by a dashing 45 yard run by Bob Hamilton near the end .... After X had twice turned back Red threats on the 23 and 9 in the second semester, Man- ual counted . . . Kauffmann went back to kick on that 9, but a bad center pass and too much time, enabled Manual to intercept on the 1 . . . Taylor bucked two plays later and Myers scored in the third on a 12 yard slash . . . Hamilton's dash through the middle of the Red line was the surprise of the game. Statistics - St. X. The Catholic Evansville School, having lost but 2 of her last 20 contests and being one of the highest ranking teams in Indiana, was big, rough, and aggressive, but a more alert Tiger, after a fierce struggle, reigned victorious. The Schuhmannites encountered stiff resist- ance from the heavy Cadet line and were un- able to push across a score until late in the second period, when Bob Hamilton hit the line from the 1, after going through on a 28 yard reverse from Jeep Quire to that marker. The Cadets came back in the third on a 69 yard touchdown pass, and appeared to be on their way to another when the ubiquitous Mr. Quire intercepted a pass and galloped 90 yards to a touchdown on one of the season's sterling runs behind beautiful blocking and superb use of his interference .... The Record Shop, the Madrid Bowling Alleys, the corner of Fourth and Chestnut-some of the gang could always be found in one of those spots. And then, of course, there were the Academy girls who came along and who made afternoons-in-town doubly pleasant. Life after two-thirty was always enjoyable and sometimes wonderful . . . 114 T LEISURE TIME Recess time . . . Talk about Friday night's game, the test that was coming up the next period, the date We had for the next dance . . . And in between our conversation We munched on sandwiches and made a valiant eiort to absorb our necessary vitamins . . . A half hour of good- natured fun . . . A Welcome break in the day's scholastic grind . . . Our most popular period! . . . 115 I F? GL NCE BACK i-. 5 I l3 - OMEHOW We never ill V, . thought it would come- ll the time to say Goodbye to Green and Gold, the moment to bid Farewell to the scenes and memories of four happy years. How swiftly those years lied by! The seconds, the minutes, the hours, the days, the Weeks, the months, the years . . . They were gone before We fully appre- ciated their sweetness, before We had thoroughly absorbed their happiness and their laughter. Looking back We find it difficult to select outstanding scenes, impressions that were deeper than others. Life at St. X. was a complicated, confused, de- vastatinglyvhappy mixture of a hundred and one different things. Teachers, classmates, noisy lunch periods, pep ral- lies, football and basketball games, the visit to the chapel before school, com- positions, the poems We had to memorize, experiments in the Chem and Physics Laboratories, dates and dances, Maxwell Field, du Pont Stadium, the Male Gym. . . . They all merge and mingle into one another and lose individual significance and shape. . When we were Freshmen-docile lit- tle fellows still amazed and bewildered at the mysteries of life in high school- we used to wonder what it was that caused the older boys to be so very much in love with St. X., so devoted to the Green and Gold colors. But the truth dawned on us gradually as the time went byg the St. X. spirit was born in us some- how and someway and was nurtured by our teachers and by our classmates until we, too, came to have an all-embracing love for 118 West Broadway. The passing years brought us many things: a knowledge of the real signifi- cance of life--that it is but a period of probation, a preparation for a much hap- pier and eternal lifeg the enduring beau- ties of Catholicism-the tremendous truths and principles entrusted to and guarded by Holy Mother Church, loyalty to school--a belief in what St. X. repre- sents and a pride in her accomplish- ments, friendships-the deep and abid- ing comradeship we shared with our fellow students and with our teachers. We can never adequately express in words what St. X. has meant to us, what it will continue to mean to us as the years go by. All of our youth's precious remembrances are linked inseparably to 118 West Broadway, are colored, beauti- fully and enchantingly, with Green and with Gold. To our teachers, the Xaverian Broth- ers, we owe a debt of gratitude We will never be able to repay. Their kindness, helpfulness, friendly advice . . . Such things will never be forgotten. We will GLANCE BACK often as life goes by. We will remember the scenes and faces this 1945 Tiger endeavors to make photographically unforgettable. For the Spirit of X. will be ours for- ever and forever-the guiding force of our ideas and ideals and of our very lives. AUTC RAPI-IS chan mn..
