BROTHER WILLIAM, C. F. X. WE SALUTE THE MAN WHO HAS BEEN AT THE HEAD OF OUR SCHOOL FOR THREE OF OUR FOUR YEARS IHERE. SUCCEEDING BROTHER BEN- JAMIN IN I937, BROTHER .WILLIAM HAS GUIDED ST. X. TO NEW HEIGHTS SPIRITUALLY, SCHOLASTICALLY, AND ATHLETICALLY. our principal BROTHER ADALBERT, C. F. X director of studies---' message be My Dear Graduates: K Congratulations and best wishes on the occasion of your graduation from St. Xavier High School. After your graduation, you will turn your thoughts toward new and broader fields of endeavor. Many of you will further your studies at colleges or universi- ties to prepare for the priesthood or brotherhood, others will prepare for the various professions or fields of business administration, while others will strive to perfect themselves in the industrial arts. Whatever be your vocation, let your Catholic Faith animate your life. Strive to be an intellectual Catholic-one who really knows his Faith, who loves it, who lives it daily, one who loves to tell others what a glorious thing it is to be a Catholic. In these days of turmoil and strife among nations and peoples, we have also the astounding evils of wrong thinking and false teaching in our institutions of higher learning with the result that men and women, and particularly the youth of the nation, are being misdirected about the very essentials of life and religion. The outlook of such upon life is vague and oftentimes morose, because they have been misguided by leaders and teachers, who should have inspired them with better, more beautiful, and with more noble things of life. The graduates from a Catholic high school should have no fears of present day evils, and they will not so long as Catholic principles are their guides in all that pertains to faith and morals. My dear graduates, go into the world determined to be an intellectual and militant Catholic-the kind of Catholic that your Church, country, parents, school and teachers will be proud of and refer to us as an ideal American Catholic Citizen. On The Job Sfepping Ou+ class history 4-7am Qleeiwq QGCIJM The First Year 1936-1937-We were Freshmen! Brother Be- nignus was Director of Studies and Brother Benjamin was Principal. On November l, Brother Dionysius died suddenly and, on a snowy day, the entire student body heard Mass at St. Boniface's for the repose of his soul. In February, 1937, the unforgettable Ohio Valley flood disrupted school for a period of weeks and damaged many homes of boys in this class. Mid-year exams were dispensed with when school finally resumed and returning students found that the water had damaged basement typing and lab rooms. In May, the Freshman Field Day was held at Shawnee Park. Paulie Miller won the 100-yard dash and baseball throwing contest, while lack Mc- Sweeney won the 220. The Freshman Relay was won by lA, but IH amassed the greatest number of points. World events to be associated with this period include: The maritime workers' strike on the Pacific Coast, the inauguration of Presi- dent Roosevelt tor a second term, the New London, Texas, school explosion, which killed 293, the destruction of the dirigible Hinden- burg , and the Coronation of King George Vl and Queen Elizabeth of England. The academy award motion picture for 1936-1937 was The Life of Emile Zola and Spencer Tracy was acclaimed for work in Captains Courageous. In the world of sports, the New York Yankees defeated the New York Giants four games to two to win the 1936 World Series, Pittsburgh defeated Washington 21-0 in the 1937 Rose Bowl, and War Admiral romped home with the 1937 Kentucky Derby. ,. The Second Year 1937-1938-Sophomores now! A new principal, Brother William, and a new building, Fresh- man Hall, greeted the eleven hundred and fify boys who entered St. X this year. Bernie Crimmins led the Tiger footballers, and several new clubs, including the Camera Club and the Stamp Club, were formed. The year was cli- maxed in March, 1938, when the St. Xavier basketball team, coached by Bob Schuhman, won the National Catholic Basketball Tourna-- rnent at Chicago, for the third time. On the team were three members of the class of '40- lirn Ewing, Tommy Geisler and Paulie Miller. The team, feted by state, city and religious dignitaries, was received by the public at the Armory, and a special edition of The Xavier News was issued in its honor. Earl Gerhard, won top honors in the State test in Geometry. Sophomore class of '40, Achievement Field Day results listed lack McSweeney as winner of the 100-yard dash, Charles Wathen as winner of the 220, Class 2A as carrying away honors in the tug-of-war and softball contests, and 2E as the winning class. Thus ended our second year at St. Xavier's. lt was during this period that Italy gave notice of her withdrawal from the League of Nations, Germany took over Austria, and the Richard Vlfhitney Wall Street scandal came to light. Spencer Tracy again won the Academy Award, this time for his part in Boy's Town. Bette Davis was lauded for Iezebel, and a special award was given Walt Disney for Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, the first feature length cartoon. The New York Yankees took the 1937 World Series from the New York Giants, four games to one, Lawrin won the 1938 Kentucky Derby, and California defeated Alabama 13-0 in the 1938 Rose Bowl game. i' 'k 'k The Third Year 1938-1939-As Iuniors, we began the second half of our schooling at St. Xavier's. When classes resumed on September 5, 1938, Brother Adalbert was the new Director of Studies, Brother Rudolph was athletic director, and Brother Sylvanus was athletic business man- ager. Ioe Celetti captained the 1938 Tiger foot- ball team, whose greatest feat was the con- quest of the Male High Bulldogs. The Booster Club was organized and promoted many class history activities, finally donating a new loud speaker unit to the school. The Marconi Science Club also came into existence this year. The jubilee spirit prevailed throughout the second semester as l939 was the centennial year of the Xaverian Brothers, the seventy-fifth year of the Xaverian Brothers in Louisville, and Brother Columba celebated his Silver Iubilee in April. Following' the Iunior Field Day in May, our third year at St. Xavier's came to an end. Memorable events of this time include: The New England hurricane, Gerrnany's annexa- tion of Czechoslovakia, the death of Pope Pius Xl and the election of Eugenio Cardinal Pacelli, who took the name Pius Xll, as his successor, Italy's seizure of Albania and the United States Government's official recognition of the Franco nationalist regime in Spain. Mickey Rooney was the star of the year and the out- standing picture was Good-bye Mr. Chips. The Three Little Fishes was the novelty song hit that everyone was singing towards the close of the year. The 1938 World Series found the Chicago Cubs going down before the New York Yankees in four straight games, Duke succumbed before the Trojans of California, 7 to 3, in the 1939 Rose Bowl, and Iohnstown was the winner of the 1939 Kentucky Derby. i' 'k i' The Fourth Year l939-1940-At long last-Seniors! Eleven hun- dred and forty-six boys enrolled at St. Xavier High School in September, l939. This entire student body heard a special Mass of the Holy Ghost at the Cathedral of the Assumption soon after the beginning of the semester. Class elec- tions followed soon and Pat Lenahan, captain of the Tiger football team, was elected general- issimo president of the student body. Knobby Walsh and Tommy Geisler were elected gen- eralissimo vice president and secretary-treas- urer, respectively. At the head of the St. Xavier Student Council was Phil Muldoon. Two Senior C.S.M.C. study clubs were organized and met throughout the year. The St. Iohn Bosco Club was organized with Brother Iohn Ioseph at its head to assist boys in selecting their vocations. The Marconi Science Club this year elected Earl Gerhard as its president and later in the year gave a special science exhibit in the school auditorium. The P.E.P. Club replaced last year's Booster organization and had as its president, Charles Clark. The club sponsored several dances, one a special dance for the Seniors held in the St. Xavier gym. The P.E.P. Club also sponsored the first girls' pep rally ever held in the St. Xavier' gym. The Music Appreciation Club was organized. The Rev. Cyril Georges, a former student at St. Xavier, was retreat master at the annual retreat for the Seniors and Iuniors. Brother Adalbert was stricken with an attack of appendicitis and was forced to undergo an operation. Thomas Geis- ler captained the St. X cagers who Won the seventh regional tournament, bowed out in the State to the eventual winner of the State Cham- pionship, and then travelled to Newport, R. I., for the Eastern States Catholic Invitational Basketball Tournament, where it lost to one of the best teams in the East. Then came the round of activities, exams, ceremonies and formalities terminating with graduation. The New York Yankees won the 1939 World Series four games to none against the Cincin- nati Reds. The Louisville Colonels surprised the world when they defeated Rochester four games to three to cop the Little World Series. Southern California defeated Tennessee in the l939 Rose Bowl by the score of 14-U, and Gala- hadion was the winner of the 1940 Kentucky Derby. This final year was a war year. War swept across Europe like a scourge, involving Eng- land, Poland, France, Germany, Russia, Den- mark, Norway, Belgium, Netherlands, Fin- land, and other countries. President Roose- velt provoked a nation-wide controversy when he proclaimed the third Sunday in November fNovember 233 Thanksgiving Day instead of the traditional last Thursday in November date. Gone With the Wind was the motion picture that everyone was talking about and the wee voice of Wee Bonnie Baker made Oh, Johnny Oh the national anthem. Special credit should be given to these members ol the class ol '40, who were on the honor roll throughout their lour years here. 4A Thomas John Carroll John Roberl' Clancy Charles Alexander Clark William Morisser Cormier Rudolph Fulfon Klarer Philip Joseph Muldoon Karl Michael Schmirf William Francis Talbol 4B John Edwin Benlreri' Bernard Francis Bowling Earl Roberf Gerhard Thomas William Geisler James Joseph Kessinger Edward Dominic Krebs John Louis Schuhmann Warren George Von Roenn 4D Bernard James Blalre Marius Joseph Gadlage Leo Andrew Gies Raymond James Haragan Leo Aloysius Link John Lawrence Schweinharf -11 messages from the presidents by PaT Lenahan presidenT oT 4-D Several Things have impressed me during my Tour years here aT ST. SEPTEMBER. 1939 DEAR DIARY: I'm sorry if I bruised you this morning, but you were the closest thing to me and that darn alarm clock wouldn't shut itself off. School as usual, missed in English and Math Cas usuall. The afternoon was uninteresting . . . got my homework. l saw the Central City-St. X game tonight I saw something at the game tonight, and, boy, she had everything-but oomphatically! I haven't met her yet, but-well, l'll keep you posted. THURSDAY. NOVEMBER, 1939 DEAR DIARY: As each day grows colder, our studies seem to grow harder. Today, along with several other seniors, I got jugged for selling pep rally tickets to underclassmen fthe suckersl. I strolled down- town after school with a couple of boys and played cowboy at Taylor's. She floated by with a group of girls. I'm sure she's just dying to meet me, she always has that certain gleam in her eyes. I got my homework before going to the study club meeting tonight. Afterwards, a gang of us went to Kelly's, where we played that 7-ll machine, I lost tomorrow's lunch money. DECEMBER. 1939 DEAR DIARY: Christmas holidays! Several of us St. X fellows went in town to do our Christmas shopping this morning. Christmas was on every corner and in every store. I saw her in one of the depart- ment stores, but she quickly vanished in the milling crowd. This afternoon we went ice skating and sledding in Cherokee Park with some academy girls. They couldn't skate, but-well, neither could we. Confidentially, we didn't go there to skate or sled anyway. Tonight we went down to -the club and played cards. I think I got a cold coming home-that barrel didn't have any lining. FRIDAY. IANUARY 26. 1940 DEAR DIARY: During school today, l was so excited by the prospect of tonight's P. E. P. Club Dance that I could hardly keep my mind on my studies, which, at that, is nothing unusual. I didn't get a date for the dance because I heard she would be there. And she was! And I met her! And . . .! The dance was a great success, at least until her date caught on to my wolfing her. P. S.-I've changed my philosophy of life, women aren't so bad, after all. FRIDAY. MARCH. 1940 DEAR DIARY: Oh, happy day! Her name and mine appeared together in the Xavier News today. And me a member of the Vocation Club. After school some of us St. X. fellows attended the Legion of Decency meeting in the school hall. The fact that several hundred academy girls were there had nothing to do with our going, of course. After the meeting, the gang went down to the bowling alleys and passed the remainder of the afternoon. Tonight I had a date with her, we tripled with two other couples. I scratched the right fender parking the car, that means no car for a month! But I enjoyed the evening-with her. It must be the weather. TUESDAY. MAY 28. 1940 DEAR DIARY: This was a review day at school preparatory to the final exams which start tomorrow. lt's hard to believe, but I'm actually graduating. School got little of our attention today. We all seem to be trying to get as much pleasure as possible out of these last days. Some of my fellow grad- uates l'll never see again after Iune 7 Cthat's the night we graduatel. Which reminds me-the Parent-Teachers Association is giving us seniors an exclusive and free Prom at the school follow- ing the Graduation Exercises. Gosh, that makes you feel kind of homesick-like already. Its very evident we seniors don't want to leave. But we'll never really leave. We'll still be here through our associations with the Alumni, the Tiger Boosters Inc., and the Parent-Teachers Association. We couldn't really leave, we couldn't. Not the class of 1940! The association cooperated with the student body and school in general to make many affairs a success and sponsored the Fall Festival last November. Officers of the P.T.A. were: I. Lawrence Willenbrink, President. Wallace W. Spalding, Vice President Mrs. Iohn I. Lippy, Secretary Szfifwmf TI'IE RELIGIOUS BULLETIN The St. Xavier Religious Bulletin, published weekly and edited by the Rev. Brother Iohn Ioseph, C.F.X., consists of four pages mimeographed, modeled after the religious bulletin of the University of Notre Dame. This year was the second year for the bulletin here at St. X. The Bulletin featured suggestions and advice, both spiritual and practical. Space was given to promoting greater school spirit among the boys. Messages by members of the Senior Class were published, contests were sponsored, and each boy looked forward to receiving the paper each Friday morning. Although small-sized, the St. Xavier Religious Bulletin was large enough to reach into every boy's heart and instill there those practical ideals essential to Catholic manhood. 'k 1' THE XAVIER NEWS ' Five issues of the News, St. Xavier student publication, were issued during the year. Each issue consisted of eight pages tabloid size, and contained articles on school events and literary offerings from various students. l Editor of the News this year was Charlie Iohnson. Paul Willenbrink and Bob Mclntyre served as sports editors and the Rev. Brother Rudolph, C.F.X., was faculty adviser. Members of the staff were: Earl Evans, Iames Kessinger, Bill Talbot, Fred McGill, Gerald Stratman, Bernie Schoo, Richard Curran, Charles Clark, lohnny Narz, Billy Schell, Wallace Spalding, Lawrence Wil- lenbrink, Richard Spalding, Iirn Finnegan and Bill Cormier. 'k i' ul' i' THE TIGER This issue of the Tiger marks the first publication of the book since 1929, although a special Senior issue of the Xavier News published last year took the form of a yearbook. Plans for the book were laid early in the year and a subscription drive was begun soon after Easter. - Many details of the book were decided by a council of representatives from the various Senior classes. Editor of the Tiger' is Charlie Iohnson. Bill Talbot is assistant editor. ii? By BOB MclNTYRE '40 Every year, as Iune rolls around, a delega- tion of high-class athletes are separated from their Alma Mater by the graduation route, and a new bunch of talent is to succeed the fellows of the preceding year. This year, the Bengals, successful in some sports and not so in others, lose an honorable lot of athletes, who roamed the gridiron, cage and diamond for old X. Not accounting for this, however, the grid season was somewhat mediocre, with the Green and Gold gridders winning their first game of the season over Central City by a lopsided score of 26-0, and then proceeding to bow in 7 out of 8 of their remaining encounters, including setbacks at the hands of Manual, 32-7 and Male, 13-O. With Coaches Grone and Schuh- mann as pilots, the Tigers looked exceptionally well last fall, but injury riddled the Tiger's hopes. They did accomplish several things however. They scored on the Beds of Manual for the first time in several years when they scored the first marker in the Manual game only to have the Reds rally and Win 32-7. After holding their other arch-rival scoreless for three quarters and a large part of he final period, the Tigers were hard pressed and bowed 13-O. lack Fallot and l'leinie Kauffman, co-cap- tains of the '40 grid team will succeed Pat Lenahan at the Tiger captaincy. Along with veterans of the previous campaign and new material coming up, these fellows should de- feat both Male and Manual in the coming sea- son which promises to be a thrill. e Captain Pat Lenahan and Shieky Klarer represented St. X in the East-West game in Lexington and received honorable recognition on the All-State team. So much for football, and what about the basketball season of '39-40? As a custom, in these troubled times, the Cagesters of X rolled to another successful basketball year and again for the fourth consecutive season repre- senting the Seventh Region in the State Finals at Lexington. The Tigers of Bob Schuhmann won 18 of their 26 games, including all games played. Norb Walsh led the city scorers and Captain Geisler was second. The entire team performed remarkably throughout the whole season. Skeeter Keiffner and Captain elect Owen Weis also showed up well in most of the games, off-setting many of the taller teams which the gallant Tigers opposed. Although they lost out in both the State and National Catholic meets, the Tigers played brilliant ball in both contests. Lack of height and injuries were the main causes of the downfall. How- ever another year faces Coach Schuhmann, and in order to cope with the pot-shotter of the Bluegrass and the near-by states he must build that height which he seems to have from the looks of rookies coming up the ladder from the minor teams. Along with these, and such able veterans as Captain Weis, Greene, Nolan, Thompson, Warren, Bell, Gelthaus and Schroer Bob should have a great and successful year. lust wait. Spring sports are becoming more and more popular and wide-spread at St. X. The Base- ballers started the season off quietly, but soon found the pace ancl began to tear down the opposition. St. X had a quite successful net season, aclancing to the city play-off with the Purples of Male and losing, 4-3. The track team was more or less mediocre, but good talent is in view for the succeeding season. L HIGHLIGHTS OF '39-'40 SEASON Tigers start grid season with rollicking vic- tory over Central City by 26-0, featuring some brilliant plays by Pat Lenahan . . . Graven and Weis' long runs against Hazard . . . Iackie Thompson pushed the pigskin over the Manual goal-line, scoring for the first time in several years in bowing to the Reds by 32-7 . . . Some great defensive play in the Male-X game staves off Male rallies, with Lady Luck giving the Purples a 13-0 victory . . . In the cage picture, Knobby Walsh rallies to score 18 points against Valley, a game in which the Tigers won, 47-37. . . . Alumni held to 39-41 victory by scrappy Tigers . . . Tigers defeat Male in the 7th Re- gional final and earn trip to Lexington . . . Tommy Geisler goes on a scoring rampage and counts 14 points against Hazel Green . . . And many more thrills have the Tiger fans wit- nessed, only to mention a few, in the 1939-40 season, in every department of athletics, and can expect many more in the years to come.
