They made signs, sold T-shirts, pennants and stickers. C - Each knot in the 'bear scare' counted as one more step to state. D - Nothing like advertising PRIDE . . . 'MOHAWK PRIDE' stands out front. Each rally held something special - an amusing skit, an inspiring pep talk, or even special guests, like Mayor Peeler, who dressed to the teeth for our most memorable assembly ' 3 -5 4, ., if -the spirited rally that preceded our playoff game in November. M'tl'i1l WK5 4 YOU'RE GOING IN A NOBUDY BUT YOU'RE CGMING BACK A S ASSEMBLIES Whenever a group of Saint Wendelin students get together it is always an occasion of merriment and entertainment, but the laughs were really in high gear for a number of assemblies this year at which we discovered that some of our school-mates actually had talent! B. At their first crack at building a float, Freshman stomp their way to first place. C. A PERFECT HOMECOMING '57 1 To start the Homecoming Festivities Mr. Herman greets Larry Strahm and the other paratroopers, after successfully dropping in with the game ball. Attendants are shown in their classical cars during the parade. Homecoming queen was then announced and crowned during halftime. There are the obvious differ- ences, there are the religious and the laity, the men and the women, but when in school they do not appear as teachers, with a million peculiarities, but as the faculty, a united group of educators whose assignment, and voca- tion, too, we hope, is teaching .... This is their section. We don't have half the spcae to begin to tell you about them. We have their pictures, or as we in journalism so crudely say, their mug shots, and we have a wealth of facts, likes, dislikes, statistics as well. This is only a feeble attempt, a sketchy summary. We will all carry our particu- lar memories of these people as we go on, and if our sec- tion can re-spark those times in years to come, we've been successful. Mr. Babione, pictured on the left, is pointing out who knows what, but we find him a good introduction to the faculty of Saint Wendelin High School, circa. 1976-1977. FACULTY W I MR. KENNETH HERMAN is also a member of our faculty staff. He is a very busy man around the school because he serves as the athletic director and sells tickets for the football and basketball games. Mr. Herman has a B.S. in Education. He likes butter pecan ice cream and his favorite time of day is evening. He handles most of the discipline around school. Our Pastor, FATHER EMERY I. IGNACZ, was born on October 2O,1933. His favorite color is burgundy and he's a football fan. Father lgnacz has attended Our Lady of the Lake Seminary, Mt. St. Mary's Seminary and St. Thomas University. He graduated from high school in 1951. Father enjoys Columbo, and All in the Family. FATHER STEPHEN P. CAIRNS is chaplain for the high school. This is his third year of teaching religion to the students. He graduated from St. Peter's in Mansfield, went on to receive a B.A. from St. Meinrad's, St. Meinrad, Indiana and an M.Ed. from Zavier University. FATHER DAVID M. ROSS is Moderator for our CYO activities and teaches religion to some of the high school students. He graduated from Lima Central Catholic High School and then continued his education at the University of St. Thomas Aquinas in -A? Rome. His personal pet peeve is umpolished shoes and his favorite beverage is scotch. He has brown eyes and some of his special interests are swimming and golf. SISTER MARY ELISBETH, S.N.D., was born on june 15. She enjoys all kinds of music. If Sister could change her name, she would change it to Sister Mary Elizabeth so people would spell it right! Her favorite color is orange and her favorite time of day is evening. She also enjoys lime sherbert. SISTER MARY DELPHINE, S.N.D., is one of our new creative staff members. She enjoys music, flower arrangements, and reading. She attended the Notre Dame Academy in Toledo. Sister' s favorite colors are blue and blue-green and she enjoys drinking ginger ale. She also enjoys butter pecan ice cream. SISTER MARY DOLORE, S.N.D., graduated from Notre Dame Academy and went to DeSales College to get her B.S., then to Columbia Teachers College to get her M.A. Her hobbies are reading and gardening. CHARLES EDWARD SCHANK was born on january 4, 1953. He is a fan of football, basketball, and hockey. His favorite actor is Robert Redford. He likes casual dress and his favorite candy bar is Hershey's. Mr. Schank is our drivers' ed instructor this year. MR. THOMAS E. SCHETTER is the band director of our school. He helps incite the school spirit at our pep rallies and games with his spirited music direction. He was born on February 20, 1946 and is a graduate of SWHS and the University of Notre Dame. MS. SHARON TRAINOR, another rookie to our staff, has a B.A. in Spanish and Physical Education from Brockport State University. Some of her special interests are: sports ther favorite is badmintonl, the guitar, and singing. Her favorite joke is: What constitutes a seven course dinner for an Irishman? A potato and a six-pack of beer. She is also humorous in the classroom, teaching health, Spanish I, and PE. MS. ROSEANNE VITALE graduated from Start High School in Toledo, then advanced to BGSU to get her B.S. in Education. She teaches Art l,ll,IIl, Crafts, Interior Decorating, and Consumer Math. Her favorite sport is football, movie, Doctor Zhivago, and her favorite singing group is the Average White Band. Her hobbies are travelling and art. MRS. KATHRYN WOLLAM is one ofthe younger teachers in our school- 16 to be exact lor so she saysll She is pretty intelligent for her age, because she has a B.S. in education from Ohio State. She has attended St. joseph High School, Fremont, DeSaIes College, Toledo, and the University of Detroit. Besides her classroom work, Sister also takes care of the high school chapel and she does a marvelous job. SISTER MARY MATTHIAS, S.N.D., has a B.A. in English from DeSales College. Sister's favorite actor and actress is any St. Wendelin- lad or lass, and her idea of a good joke is when a St. Wendelinite shows up at school on a free day! Sister Matthias' favorite sport is baseball and her favorite movie is The Sound of Music. SISTER MARY LLAURA, S.N.D., is also new to our school this year. She's the one with blonde hair and blue eyes. She drinks pepsi and her favorite colors are red and blue. Sister is also interested in music. She has a B.A. in English and German and an M.A. in Theology. SISTER MARY ROSALEE, S.N.D., is also a new member of our faculty this year. She is known as the creative choir teacher around school. He has a B.S. in English and an M.A. in Education. He attended Fremont St. loe High School. Some of his special interests are reading, fishing, and travelling. His pet peeve is intolerance of any kind. MR. ROBERT LOUIS BLUHM helps with our band. He graduated from Cleveland Heights High and attended B.G.S.U. He has blue eyes and is interested in model airplanes. He likes jerry Lewis, Frank Sinatra, and baseball. MR. THOMAS MICHAEL BABIONE is new to SWHS this year. He was born on November 12, 1950. He enjoys fishing and camping, and his pet peeve is the lack ofdistribution of national wealth. Mr. Babione looks up to his stepfather as an honest and straight-forward person. He is assistant football coach and he enjoys music, waterskiing, and photography. He graduated from Pleasant High School. His favorite song is We've Only just Begun, and his favorite TV show is M A S 'H . He likes strawberry ice cream and shrimp. MR. DINO IOSEPH CAPORINI, IR. is interested in basketball ofcourse. Running as a tough fourth man was Tim Seibert, the only underclassman among the Top Five. Running fifth was Mark Geyman. WENDELIN 7 - GIBSONBURG 6 In the first game of the '76 season the Saints faced off against the Gibsonburg Golden Bears, and in the first half it was a typical knock-down, drag-out fight. The Saints broke the ice with one minute remaining in the half, Mike Cramer took a handoff from jeff Lee on an end around pass and unloaded to Dave Affholder downfield. When the smoke cleared it was Affholder in the end zone with six points. Cramer kicked the EP for a 7-0 lead. ln the second half Gibsonburg came back with a score but the all-important extra point hit the goal post and bounced short. It was a real break for the Saints as they chalked up win No. 1 ST. WENDELIN 20 - LAKOTA 6 The Mohawk offense started to move as they scored 20 points on Lakota's huge defense. The first score came of a nine yard pass from Lee to Cramer. Later, Greg Hendricks scored his first TD of '76 from three yards out. Lee then closed out the scoring in the fourth quarter with a two yard TD sneak. ST. WENDELIN 27 - HOPEWELL-LOUDON 0 The Mohawk defense turned in a super night while recording their first shutout of the year, while on the other hand, the offense turned in an equally impres- sive slate. Lee riddled the Chieftain defense with two TD passes, one to Cramer for 42, and one to Affholder for 23 yards, respectively. Hendricks rambled for 80 yards on 13 carries and one 21 yard touchdown run. ST. WENDELIN 28 - OTTAWA HlLLS 7 I ST. Wendelin's fourth victory turned into a laugher as Dave Affholder ran wild through the Green Bear de- fense. Blackie carried the ball 27 times for 211 yards, all in three quarters. He ran for touchdowns of 39, 67, and 13 yards as the offensive line created un- believable holes in the OH defense. Lee scored the last TD on a three-yard run. Mike Cramer had a per- fect night with four EP conversions. ST. WENDELIN 38 - NORTH BALTIMORE O Win No. 5 came on Homecoming night as the Mohawks romped over the Tigers. Affholder gained 130 yards and three TD's, Pat Faeth scored on a five yard pass from Lee, and Hendricks bulled his way in from one yard out to cap the scoring. 62 ST. VVENDELIN 19 - LAKESIDE O The SW defense turned in their third straight shutout and even added a safety as the Mohawks won their sixth game in six attempts. Cramer converted his first field goal of the year from 34 yards and gathered in a 63 yard bomb from Lee. Affholder scored the final TD from 21 yards on an option play. ST. WEN DELIN 12 - SANDUSKY ST. MARYS' 6 This night was history as the Mohawks recorded their first win over the Panthers since 1951. A 21 yard sweep from Affholder provided the first score. An 11 yard run by St. Marys' tied the score and Affholder's extra effort blocked the extra point. lt was tied till late in the fourth quarter when Lee pitched out to Affhol- der who ripped off 33 yards. Three plays later Lee hit Faeth in the end zone for the winning touchdown. FREMONT ST. IDE 22 - ST. WENDELIN 14 St. joe proved to be a little better than anyone thought as they dealt the Saints their first loss of 1976. The only SW scores came from pass plays from Lee to Cramer covering 19 and 22 yards respectively. ST. WENDELIN 14 - NORWALK ST. PAUL 14 The Mohawks needed at least a tie to capture a bid in the state playoffs and they did just that. The Mohawks began great as Affholder scored on a 42 yard run and a TD pass from Lee. But the Flyers did not give up as they capitalized on three Mohawk fumbles and one interception to tie the game. IN THE STATE SEMI-FINALS ASHTABULA ST. IOHN 29 - ST. WENDELIN 7 The Mohawks were the Region 10 Champs, and be- cause of that they won a bid to play in the state playoffs in Lorain. In running into a very big St. john team the Saints found the going tough, scoring only seven points. The Herald offense made their own holes and powered their way past the Mohawks. But even in losing the Saints brought state-wide recogni- tion to the school and city, we cannot doubt It was a very good year. He also led the team in assists and was second in steals to fellow captain Harry. Harry averaged 11.1 points a game and was second in assists. jeff will be sorely missed due to graduation while Harry will return for another year of 'prep basketball. Their fine example of leadership sparked the Mohawks to an outstanding 17-4 season. lll i ' To the astonishment of almost everybody, friend and foe alike, the 1976-77 Mohawk cagers bounced their way to their best year since 1973. ' 1 ri A LITTLE BIT OF EVERYTHING 2 Plagued by inexperience, the frosh football team and Coach Babione lost their first four games of the season. But the inspired Babionians would not roll over and die. They won their last game by beating Hopewell-Loudon in a hard-fought contest, which put a smile on Coach Babione's face. The freshman basketball season was one of frustration for Coach Babione but it wasn't without its high points. Their record was 2-11, but they matured as the season wore on. They entered a tournament and won their first game over Cory-Rawson. They then lost to a superb McComb team who were undefeated to end their season. Nevertheless, the team played with determination and never gave up until the final buzzer sounded. The CYO Basketball team finished a fine season with a sparkling 9-3 record. Teamwork and hustle helped the CYO glide to eight easy victories before falling twice straight, one was a controversial game, the other featured a double overtime. They won their first game in the tournies before being edged in their next. The CYO Mohawks still managed to close their season with a league crown under their belts.
