Prevue Game Neither the Redmen nor the Mohawks scored against their opponents during the Ninth Annual Football Prevue sponsored by the Booster's As- sociation in the Fostoria Memorial Stadium, September 5th. Some 4,000 fans enjoyed the balmy fall weather in watching the exhibition games. The Saints made a very poor showing against Van Buren who walked off the field as victors in an 8-0 match. The Mohawks who looked bad defensively did, however, manage to make one drive in the second half. Fullback Joe Weingates, Halfbacks Dave Devine and Bill Heinsman teamed up for 35 yards, but the push halted. Gary Howard uncorked three nice passes -40, 30, and 35 yards -but all were incom- plete. One was dropped. Fostoria High School battled Willard to a 0-0 deadlock, while the Spartans downed Risingsun 16-0, Montgomery Local, 20 - 12 In the first game of the season the Mohawks went all out to surprise Montgomery and the 1500 spectators. The Mohawks, with one win in four years, were the underdogs, while the Spartans were favored with an all- win team. The linemen deserve a special pat on the back. The Mohawks' defense, which was the best in three years, showed a promise of a won- derful season. 4. Mike Jinks sf XS 5. Quick Stop! Mohawks vs. Maumee Valley, 27-20 With only one yard to go for a touchdown and a victory for the Mohawks of St. Wendelin, time elapsed giving the Mohawks of Maumee Valley Country Day School a 27 - 20 victory, and the Saints their second loss. Gary Howard proved himself very capable in sub- stituting in quarterback position for Gene Peluso, who Was injured in pre-season practice. Dave Devine and Russ Kolby also came through for the Saints. Joe Weingates sustained a shoulder separation which put him out of action for the rest of the season. H, , . 3 I: 1' 5 N 6 m 5 , Sv I ' .,. I -5 sf' if 3 Ei ' . 1: 55515: V 1. Joe Weingates 2. Gene Peluso North Baltimore, 26 -18 The first win of the season came when the S.W.H.S. Mohawks downed the North Baltimore Tigers, 26-18. Four touchdowns were made by Bill Heinsman. Dave Devine carried the ball for a total of 75 yards from the line of scrimmage. The Mohawks were already on their way to a very successful season. I Norwalk, St. Paul, 18- 20 victory Number 3. A 62-yard touchdown by Gary Howard and a two-point conversion by Bill Heinsman gave the St. Wendelin Mohawks a 20 - 18 final quarter victory over the Norwalk, St. Paul Flyers at Norwalk. I At the beginning of the game Bill Heinsman took a hand-off from Gary Howard running the ball all the way to the 14-yard line. Gary made three exciting touchdowns, the last only tieing the score. It was up to the boys to outwit the St. Paul Flyers. They did when Bill scooted into the end zone for the winning points. Jim Lynch played an outstanding game on defense for St. Wendelin. 52 is 2. Gary Howard Risingsun, 8 -36 After their first win of the season, the Mo- hawks were eager to follow it up with their first game on the home field. Defensively, Risingsun couldn't hinder St. Wende1in's wide sweeps. St. Wendelin took advantage of this by setting the score, 22 -8, at the half. A first-half touchdown resulted from Gary Howard's 25-yard sprint through tackle. The play was successful because Gary reversed his direction sharply after crossing the line of scrimmage. Perhaps the best indica- tion of St. Wendelin's possibilities grew from the play of its linemen, particularly Stu Nibeck. Stu constantly delivered the block against the Rising- sun half-back who pushed the Mohawk ball-car- rier loose on wide sweeps to the left. 3. The Mohawks' First String alone piled up 298 -yards from the line of scrimmage. Coach Kenny Herman used his entire bench of 36 players in this game. Three Mohawk touchdowns were scored in the first quarter, but in the second period the Bulldogs rallied to score two touchdowns. This is the best record compiled by the Saints since 1952 when they finished with a 6-2-1 record. St. Wendelin went through the 1954-55-56-57 seasons with but one win, a 34-20 victory over Bloomdale on October 25, 1957. The Saints went into the '58 season with but two seniors and 15 juniors: Tom Haubert and Steff Wellstein, seniors, Gary Howard, Bill Heinsman, Jim Lynch, Joe Weingates, Jim Faber, Stu Nibeck, Mike Jinks, Russ Kolby, Tom Norris, Gene Peluso, Jack Baker, Tom Wolph, Francis Marley, Terry Schriener, and Jim Zemla, juniors. Sophomores boasted Dave Devine, Dave Faber, Dick Brickner, Ed Bixler, John Roberts, Ken Krupp, Bill Koepfer, Roger Burns, Steve Huth, Joe Lonsway, Larry Reinhart. Freshmen comprised Dick Algae, Fred Van Arsdale. Rodney Dell, Tom Herman, Jim Gillig, Bob Spieldenner, Bob Furillo, Jim Banks, Hugh Clark, Chuck Nye, Ed Shultz, Alex Robarge, and Steve Haaser. After being defeated in their two opening games with a 20-12 decision to Mighty Montgomery who finished as San-Wood League champions for the third straight year, and a 27-20 decision to Maumee Valley, the Mohawks went on to win five straight before dropping the final game of the season, 36-6, to Gibsonburg, the Sandusky Bay Champions. The five straight wins included a 26 - 19 score over North Balti- moreg a smashing 38-6 decision over the Risingsun Tigersg the St. Paul victory 20-185 a decisive 46-28 win over Bloomdaleg and a 22 - 14 win over Lakeside. The 46 points in the Bloomdale game also marked the most points scored by the Mohawks since 1952 when they defeated Genoa, 51 -29. It was a winning season and the five win-three loss record will long stand - a flashing tribute to the Saints. Black hair, hazel eyes, and 5'5 in height give you the main highlights of this popular senior lass. Mr. and Mrs. G. W. LaFontain provide the closet at 138 Summit Boule- vard for Dwynn to hang her cheerlead- ing outfit. Dwynn tells us that she rates basket- ball highest on the high-school sports list. This is for two reasons: because it is exciting and because one can follow the game more easily. Dwynn, who has .been a cheerleader for three years, states that through cheerleading she has met many new friends. Cheerlead- ing also gives her a means to help strengthen school spirit. JUDY KIEBEL Ever since I was in grade school, I have admired the cheerleaders and have often thought of the enjoyment of being a part of that particular group. I es- pecially like doing the Victory Cheer, declares Judy Kiebel, daughter of Dr. and Mrs. J. N. Kiebel, 326 West Center Street. Judy, a chic and demure little senior, reaches to 5 ft., has brown hair, green eyes, and a flair for style. Although swimming and tennis are Judy's favor- ite sports, this peppy cheerleader enjoys football very much and the excitement of basketball even still more. There's a college in the future for Judy who is as attracted to books as she is to cheering. JANET WALSH Take a pinch of merriment, add a dash of vim and vigor, and it all adds up to Janet Walsh, latest senior addition to S.W.H.S.'s cheerleading staff. This blonde-haired, peppy lass places basket- ball at the very top of her favorite sports list. Janet made her cheerlead- ing debut at the 1958-59 Prevue Game and has helped to keep the crowds yell- ing since then. As a senior this year, Janet is kept rather busy. Ever so often she finds time to cool her heels at 303 North Union Street where she resides with her mom and dad, Mr. and Mrs. Timothy Walsh. After graduation, Janet plans to at- tend Ohio State University where she will study dental hygiene. Karin plays a neat game when the girls' basketball leagues get going on Tuesday and Thursday evenings. The sec- ret of her basketball skill goes back to Steff, her senior brother, who proved a top- notch Mohawk Warrior in both football and basketball. Kathleen Gase Kathy Gase, S.W.H.S.'s cute redheaded cheerleader, hangs her cheerleading outfit in the home of her parents, Mr. Sz Mrs. Virgil Gase, 515 West Fremont. Kathy concludes that it is the job of the cheerleaders to keep the spirit of the boys and the fans on the exciting side. She was positively sure that this would be the best season yet. It's plain to see that basketball is this gal's favorite sport. This is be- cause there is a lot of action and rivalry.
