Throughout the years, I confess I have tahen l and moral and mat ' l your ove eria support for granted. I review the important events of my life There ' jo a d ' . were those filled with y n those tinged with sorrow: my first report card, the first time Sister made me stay after school, my First ig oly Communion, eighth-grade graduation, my first for- mal and high heels, as well as all the other times you were on hand to praise or to scold, to help and encourage me. The time is fast approaching for the big day, fune I, when you will again be on hand to lend your support. Despite all these gifts, when was the last time I thanhed you or told you that I love you. I try but I begin to feel embarrassed and decide fm too grown-up for that. So as a small tohen for the thanhs and the love fm much too old to voice I dedicat , e to you the story of my career at St. Wendelin, the 1958 FOSLIN. The Saints went into the game as heavy underdogs. Somebody forgot to tell Gene Peluso, however, because the diminutive quarterback quickly scored. After a bitter fight the Mohawks yielded a touchdown. The Saints soon went ahead again as Jon Howbert dashed across the line. Once more North Baltimore tied the score. The game then became a struggle between the lines, as Stu Niebeck and Stef Well- stein excelled for the Saints. North Baltimore scored in the last 12 seconds, but our boys did not give up. Jon Howbert took the kickoff for a re- markable run of 80 yards for the score that tied up the game l9-19. Because of this run, Jon earned for himself the title Player of the Week. Gene Peluso Ready! Aim! Fire, Jon! Joe Wemgates Dave Devine .lack Baker Bill Hemsman Stu Nibeck Dead end! St. Paul, Norwalk, 'I3-'I3 With the 26 game losing streak technically broken, the Saints were out to break it tor sure. The defensive play of the Saints was superb, with Ray Huether and Jim Faber being the bulwarks. Even with this effort, the Saints were behind, 13-O, at the start of the 'fourth period. Then the Mohawks' attack started to roll with Jon Howbert scoring two touchdowns - one on a perfect pass thrown by Gene Peluso. This typical, late rally by the Hawks, tied the score, 13-13. The score remained unchanged for the rest of the game, making it the Mohawks' second tie in a row. Player of the Week was awarded to Jon Howbert for the second time for his excellent work. Head Football Coach Kenny Herman and his assistant, Marty Vieth, talk over football strategy. Jim Faber Lakeside, 28-0 The Mohawks, after their first win, were eager to follow it up with a second but the weather, and the Lakeside Stonecrushers had other ideas. Playing in a dense fog, the Mohawks were forced to give ground steadily to a larger Lakeside team. At the end of the half the score read i4-0. Although the Saints gave a good account of themselves, the final score read 28-O in Lake- side's favor. Coach Kenny Herman did not se- lect a Player of the Week, because of the impossible playing conditions, but he indicated that he was pleased with the showing of several underclassmen. Jim Stewart ii Tom Barto .lim Lynch Russ Koby Bloomdale, 20-34 After two straight ties, the Saints were really up for this one. The Hawks kicked off, and after four downs took possession of the ball. Mike Huth scored the first touchdown for the Saints. A few minutes later, Jon Howbert scored the Mohawks' second T. D., after Tom Wolph and Dick Reinhart cleared the way. Joe Weingates plowed into Bloomdale's end ione for the Saints' third tally and the half-time score read 20-7. During the second half, Jon Howbert scored twice, Coach Kenny Herman was able to substi- tute freely. Bloomdale scored two more times, and the final tabulation found the St..Wendelin Mohawks on top, 34-20, for the Saints' first in four years. Mike Huth was chosen Player of the Week, because of his timely blocking. 53 L , . . Steve Huth Ed Bixler Gibsonburg, 41-12 ln the season's finale, the Mohawks traveled to Gibsonburg to meet the highly regarded Golden Bears. The weather was extremely cold, and the Bears were hot as they scored 28 points in the first quarter. At the half the Saints had shown nothing and the Bears had amassed a 41-0 score. In the third period neither team scored. The fourth period found the Hawks fight- ing to make a game out of it. They were spearheaded by Mike Huth as he went over for the Saints first touchdown of the game. A few minutes later Jon Howbert went over for St. Wendelin's second T. D. Both drives saw Joe Weingates getting good yardage. The final score however was 41-12 in favor of the Golden Bears. Mike Huth was chosen Player of the Week for the second time. Those playing their last game were guards Dick Reinhart and Ray Huether, left halfback Jon Howbert and right halfback Mike Huth. Paul Brickner Chuck Wolph as ml - Paiifl-2.1 P-4-.ii . .
