K M 1 -1 -F -HPI: 'recia tion We, the senior class, on behalf of the students of St. Wendelin High, wish to express our sincere appreciation and grat- itude to our Pastor, Father Kirsch. Through his tireless efforts he has helped to make St. Wendelin schools the best in the diocese. Father Kirsch reading this will probably say, They shouldn't have done this, or This wasn't necessary, but we are only too happy to take this opportunity to say a few of the many nice things which all of us feel and think concerning our good Pastor. So Thank you, Father Kirsch, and thanks again and again. to THE REVEREND RAYMOND G. KIRSCH PASTOR St. Wendelin Parish THE REVEREND SEPH I. SCHILL PRINCIPAL Sociology, Religion Instructor yeafica tion The Class of I952 wishes to dedicate this, their yearbook, the Twenty-fourth Volume of the FOSLIN, to their Principal, Rev- erend Father Schill, thus to give evidence, in some little way at least, of their deep appreciation of his loving care for them, and guidance in both their spiritual and temporal concerns. His kindly counsel for the students during the years when such counsel is most needed, will always be, not only cherished memories, but guiding stars to help them make and keep their lives exemplary ones both for time and lfor eternity. MOHAWKS 1951 Risingsun-Here The Mohawks opened the Booster's Grid Pre- view, September 7, in the local stadium with a victory of I2 to 0 over Risingsun. The S.W.H. team made a good showing and gave promise of a thrilling season. Elmore-There Elmore met their Waterloo when the Mo- hciwks invaded them in their home town, in the first scheduled game of the season, September l4, The credit of the win does not go to any individual but to every player that did his part towards this 37 to 0 win. Fremont, St. Joseph-Here Lady Luck was not with the Mohawks the night of September Zl, when Fremont St. Joe edged a win of 7 to 6 in the closing minutes of play. ' Sandusky, St. Mary-Here On September 29 the Panthers of Sandusky, St. Mary's engaged the Mohawks in the Fostoria stadium. Sparked by brilliant backfield maneu- vering and good down-field blocking, the Saints chalked up their third victory by a decisive I8 to 0 score. Anthony Wayne-There On October 5 at Whitehouse, the Anthony Wayne Tornadoes set the Mohawks back for their second loss of the season. However, it was a pretty tight struggle with the game ending, 7 to 0. Messrs. Hubbard, Walter, Conine, Holman, Weber, Smith, Foos FOOTBALL GAMES North Baltimore-Here October l2 showed the undefeated North Baltimore Tigers literally trampled by the Mo- hawks. Two successive touchdowns in the second quarter, and two in the third, gave Coach Her- man a chance to substitute freely before the Locals walked off with a 27 to 7 win. Norwalk, St. Paul-Here Dad's Night, October l9, gave all the Dad's a front line cheering spot in Memorial Stadium, and their sons in turn gave them something to cheer about. The Mohawks took command from the kickoff and finally gave the St. Paul Flyers a 46 to I3 trouncing. Genoa-There Genoa versus St. Wendelin, October 26, found the latter up against a lightning football team at Genoa. The Mohawks had to stage a last quarter rally to tie the Genoa Comets 7 to 7. Lakewood, Sf. Edward-There The Lakewood, St. Edwards game, scheduled for November 4, had to be cancelled because of weather conditions. Toledo Macom ber-Here In their final game of the Grid Season, the Mohawks bowed out to the Macomber eleven of Toledo by a score of 26 to 6. Though the last game ended in defeat the season's chart had chalked up a total of 5 wins, 3 losses ond I tie, -not too bad a record. 3 A, in -:aff .45 :R 1 'EM g?'.:wM, X 9-f'PlA'l. With only a few days rest between, St. Wen- delin's quintet met the Risingsun Tigers on the local floor with a walk-away victory of 62-42. The Mohawks notched Tiffin Calvert 58-52 in a well deserved victory, Dec. 7. The superla- tive defensive and rebound work was given credit for the excellent performance shown by the Saints. On the night of December ll the boys were out for their fourth straight victory when they faced the battling Ottawa Parochial five. How- ever, luck was against them when Ottawa wrap- ped up the game with a score of 71-62. St. Wendelin played host to Genoa Comets on December 14. After a close start the Mo- hawks pulled away and stayed in front until the finish of the game when the scoreboard read 81-67 in favor of the Mohawks. On December 18, on their home court St. Wendelin's team met the Bettsville Bobcats. The Saints as usual had no trouble in finding the basket. At the final quarter the score was 77-39. This made the Saints' fifth victory. After the game with St. Mary's Marion was cancelled, the Mohawks racked up six wins in 1952 BASKETBALL GAMES seven starts. Against St. Joe's Fremont the Mo- hawks as usual remained ahead throughout the game and finally whipped the Crimson Streaks by eighteen points. Score: 72-54. St. Wendelin Mohawk's were held in check by Webster High School's man-to-man defense for three quarters in our local gym, but were off in running as the last frame opened and romped to a 59-36 win. The Mohawks rang up their eighth victory when they rallied in the last half to beat Cygnet 49-39. This game was not a cinch as most of their other games were as they seemed off their game with inaccuracy in shooting. But the main thing was that they did win. After an even first quarter with Lima St. John, the Mohawks steadily increased their margin tc ten points at the half, sixteen at the end of the third quarter, and pushed over the Titans with a final score of 56-41. St. Wendelin soared to their tenth victory on the wings of a record breaking performance by their ace forward, Jim Krupp, against North Baltimore. Final Score: S.W.H. 83-43. St. Wendelin suffered their second loss of the season to their rivals, the Gibsonburg Golden Bears in an overtime tilt. The game was ex- tremely exciting as the lead kept exchanging hands until the final score found Gibsonburg ahead with a 60-55 win. The night of January 22 saw the Mohawks defeat a newcomer to their schedule in the form of Whitmer, Toledo when they chalked up vic- tory number eleven. ln the fourth quarter the Mohawks surged forward and finished with a 59-43 victory. Q The game against Sandusky St. Mary was, in- deed, an unusual one. St. Marys stalling tactics for three quarters left them trailing l8-l 5 as the final period opened. With two and one-half minutes left the Mohawks turned the tables on their visitors by freezing the ball and ending the game with the astounding low score of 34-22 in favor of St. Wendelin. ln the game against Lake, the Mohawks set a new scoring mark in their 86-49 victory. Need- less to say, this game was a pushover. Facing their sternest test of the season the Mohawks went down to defeat at the hands of Lima St. Rose. But Lima had to fight for their victory of 56-5l. Nearing the close of the season St. Joe Fre- mont lost to the triumphant Mohawks. The first half of the game was very close but the Mohawks were able to put a big gap between themselves and the Streaks with score of 68-46 at the end of the game. St. Wendelin basketball machine won another ball game at Bascomq A last period fade out by l952 BASKETBALL GAMES the Chieftains took off the pressure and the Mo- hawks raced in with a 73-53 triumph. On February 8, Tiffin Calvert came to town and handed the Mohawks their fourth defeat. Even though the Mohawks lost they played a very good game. lt seemed as if luck was against them. Tiffin: 55 S.W.H. 49. The St. Wendelin Mohawks ended their regu- lar season when Mansfield, St. Peter's came to the home court. The Mohawks actually trampled over them as they beat St. Peter's 7l-26. St. Wendelin had an exceptionally good record this year with sixteen wins and four losses. Flash! Mohawks win Protest Tournament! Coming from behind with a thrilling last quarter rally, Coach Kenny Herman's quintet beat Gib- sonburg 53-46 to cop the title. St. Wendelin worked its way to the finals by first squeezing by Norwalk St. Paul 47-46 on a last minute goal and free throw by Jim Krupp. Then they encountered some difficulty but managed to overcome Rossford 53-43 in the semi-finals. Gibsonburg had put down Carey and Clyde in reaching the finals against the Mohawks. ln the Championship game the Black and Gold trailed until the last quarter but turned on the steam in the final stanza to win going away.
