This was the first preview in which the Mo- hawks had ever participated. Castalia reached pay dirt shortly after the kickoff-, but the try for the extra point was no good. With less than two minutes remaining, the Black and Gold crossed the double line for six points. The con- version was good and the final score was St. Wendelin 7, Castalia 6. ELMORE It was our privilege to play the first game in Elmore's fine new stadium. And it was the first time in many years that St. Wendelin won the opening game. Trailing 7-6 with minutes to go, a beautiful running pass put SWH ahead 12-7. Then with Elmore five inches from the goal and first down, the gun ended the game. FREMONT STL JOE This game made history, as it was the first Mohawk game played in Fostoria's new stad- ium. But St. joe, always a tough opponent, spoiled the show by winning 22-7. LIMA ST. ROSE lt was a humid Sunday afternoon when the Wendies met Lima. The Countyliners were un- able to get underway offensively, thanks to Lima's bottle-neck defensive. St. Rose was not stopped, however, and the halftime ended 24-7. The Mohawks came back in the second half with a display of might by scoring three touchdowns to Lima's two, making the final score Lima 37, St. Wendelin 27. LORAIN ST. MARY After a long bus ride to the lake front the Mohawks were stymied by power and razzle dazzle. Lorain's quarter-back was one of the best T-Men the locals ever encounterd. The opponents were leading by three touchdowns at the midway mark, and when the smoke cleared St. Mary's had added another victim to their. un- beaten string, St. Wendelin falling, 25-7, .,- FOOTBALL CLYDE The Saints tallied two TD'S before halftime and that made up the Mohawk end of the scor- ing. Clyde was awarded two points on a safety in the late stage of the game. St. Wendelin won I2-2 after Clyde had offered stiffer opposition than expected. The Clyde Band did a great job between halves. LAKESIDE A few of the regulars had to watch this one from the grandstand due to injuries, and before the final gun there were more casualties, includ- ing a fracture. The Mohawks really dug in but late in the first quarter and throughout the second there came an explosion and before the Saints knew which end of the field was theirs, Fostoria was trailing, l9-O. The second half saw an inspired St. Wendelin team on the field, but the two TD'S scored were not enough to evade a 26-l 3 defeat. NORWALK ST. PAUL The thriller ofthe season. At the half the score was I4-O. Early in the third quarter, Norwalk pushed their third touchdown over to make the score 20-O, with only a little more than a quarter remaining. Then the Mohawk offensive began to click, reeling off one long run after another, and cashing in with three quick TD'S. The extra points were the difference, and a tough one was lost 20-l9. SANDUSKY ST. MARY According to statistical sheets, the locals and St. Mary's were about even. The score chart proves that each team was having a difficult time penetrating the other's defense, as the game ended O-O. lt was no night for football- cold and rainy-and few fans saw the struggle. GIBSONBURG Eight seniors were playing their last game and they wanted to end the season as they began it, with a victory, but Lady Luck wasn't with the Mohawks. It was rough and tumble all the way. The Golden Bears had about four or five good breaks and they took advantage of every one of them as they went on to win, 24-O. This was the only game of the season that the Saints didn't outscore their opponents in the second half. E 2 6 2 Z E Q 1 ,, 4 NORWALK ST. PAUL: A large crowd went to Nor- walk to watch the Mohawks drop their opening game to the Flyers despite a height advantage. At half time the Mohawks held a l5-l3 lead. After the second half tip off Norwalk pulled away and hung onto the lead and the ball game. Score 38-3l. FREMONT ST. JOE: Playing an entirely different brand of ball than in their first game the Mohawks rolled to a fast start building up a 3O-l8 lead over the Crimson Streaks at half time. The second half was a bit slower as substitutes poured into the game. The final count was 47-39, a sweet victory for the Mohawks, as it marked the first time St. Wendelin had beat- en St. loe since l946. WOESSN ER TIFFIN CALVERT: The fighting Mohawks took Calvert into camp for their third straight victory by the score of 49-43. The Saints were leading l7-lO at the turn of the first quarter, but a determined Calvert quin- tet drew within a point of the County- liners at half time 22-2l. At the end of the third quarter the Mohawks had built upi a 35-3l advantage, and were inclined lto play the rest of the game cautiously. CAPTAIN KRAMB RISINGSUN: After trailing Risingsun 22-l 6 at half time St. Wendelin unleased a devastat ing 45 Point deluge in the second half to rock the Tigers to the tune of 6l 4l It was not until midway in the third period that the locals caught up with their visitors, and after that it was all Black and Gold in one of their best of fensive games of the year. 44 NYE GENOA: W The Mohawks turned in a fighting win over the rangy Genoa Comets 51-47. The boys grab- bed an early lead of five points only to see Genoa tie the game at 8 all at the end oft the first quarter. Then the Fostorian five opened up on the Genoa tall boys to lead 24-I8 at half time. The Saints never relinguished the lead, despite whittling by the desperate Genoans while Coach Kenny Herman had his second stringers in. HOPEWELL LOUDON: The Bascomites put up a stiff fight the first quarter, but the Saints were able to grab a 23-l2 lead at half time. After the intermission the Saints came back strong to bulge their lead to 34-l8 at the third quarter. Coach Kenny Herman was able to substitute freely throughout the contest. Thehfinal score was 50-24. SCHALK FREMONT STL IOE: The Crimson Streaks were seeking revenge for the setback of De- cember 2. lt was a battle from start to finish. The score was tied at the end of each quarter except the last. St. joe forged to a nine point bulge early in the third quarter, only to see the Mohawks come back and tie it up 34-34 going into the fourth quarter. ln the last minute of play the locals grabbed a 43-4l lead and hung onto it for the win. VAN BUREN: The Saints got off to their usual slow start, allowing the Hancock County five to build up a 7-2 lead in the first few minutes, then came back and pushed ahead l2-9 at the quarter. The Mohawks piled up a 30-22 half time lead. Again Coach Kenny Herman was able to substitute freely throughout the game which ended 62-53. HOLMAN WEBER HOAPEWELL LOUDON: Hopewell Loudon was hopeful of avenging their 50-24 defeat at Bascom while St. Wendelin was concentrating on its winning streak. The Mohawks again got off to a slow start but once they found the range, there was no stopping them. They led comfortably at half time, and continued to pour it on in the third and fourth quarter to win the game easily 59-36. This was the Mohawks 8th straight victory. SANDUSKY ST. MARY S: Came Friday the l3th, came Sandusky, and gone was the Mohawks winning streak. Sandusky, who had also won eight without defeat, jumped into a l5-5 lead at the quar- ter, and the Mohawks never came any closer during the entire game. The ball just didn't want to stay in the basket that night. Sandusky with their tall boys. had com- plete control of the backboards. The game ended 49-37 in their favor. 'Twas a dark night for the locals. NORTH BALTIMORE The Mohawks treked to this nearby community expecting a breather, but instead found them- selves in a real battle with the tall tigers. The score was close from the opening tip-off till the final gun. The Wendies opened up with l4 points while the opponents were g scoreless. Then the tide reversed and the quarter ended l4-l4. The J ,gg g Mohawks were two points down at the half 25-23, and froze the ball E lii the last minute of play to insure the M 1 -5 Victory 4l -40. sn? FM GIBSONBURG: When the Black and Gold invaded the lair of the 'Gib- sonburg Golden Bears, it looked for awhile as though they were about to post their largest score of the season. The Mohawks cooled fast, however, and the Bears narrowed the gap to seven points 26-l9. After a dismal third quar- ter, in which the Golden Bears knotted the count at 35, the Mohawks outscored their opponents l6-3 in the final stanza to win going away 5l -38. CLYDE: The Mohawks picked up where they left off the pre- vious week by racking up 24 points in the first eight minutes of the contest at Clyde. Coach Kenny Herman then started to substitute, as he did most of the year whenever chance permitted. The Mohawks still had a fif- teen point bulge at half-time 31-16. The Flyers were com- pletely out classed in the second half, and became Mo- hawks llth scalp 65-40. Ffvhmaawf. GILLIG TIFFIN CALVERT: By this time the Hermanites were starting to cause a ittle eyebrow lifting in Northwestern Ohio. So the confi- lent Mohawks were determined to dispose of Tiffin Calvert, he only Class A school on the schedule. The boys in Black ind Gold were hampered by a slow start and didn't get going until the fourth quarter. Their spirited rally was tifled in the last seconds as a long desperation Calvert hot split the nets and the Mohawks succumber 43-44. LAKE: Fired by the one point heart-breaker it Calvert the Hermanities were deter- nined to get back into the win column igainst the Lake Flyers, who like the pcals, had lost but three games so far. he visitors though not a rangy outfit, were deadly on the long shots and the Aohawks did not begin to close the gap lntil shortly before the half which ended ll-25. The Mohawks came back fight- ng in the second half to knot the count it various points. The Black and Gold STEVENS inally took the lead with ten seconds re- naining, but Lady Luck again turned her lack on them, and a long mid-court shot pave the Flyers a 53-52 win. ARCADIA: Q The Mohawks ended the regular schedule at .home against the Arcadia Redmen. The boys in Black and Gold started right off for a change, and toyed with the Arcadians, building up a 27-l7 advantage at the end ofrthe first half, and led 44-25 at the three quarter mark. Kenny Herman substituted frequently thruout the contest, clearing the bench, and allowing the Red- men to cut the Mohawks lead. The final score was 60-45. HANNEFEY A CAREY: The Wendelites drew Carey for the first game in the tournament at Fremont, but they went into the game with more attention on Norwalk, the Mohawks next opponent. The Blue Streaks had won but two games all year. They lacked experi- ence, height, everything except spirit. The score at the half stood i8-l l, Carey ahead. The Mo- hawks weren't too worried, however. They knew they would win this one. Yet, they just couldn't catch up and were dropped from tourney play. The final score, Carey 40, St. Wendelin 35. Who ever thought that such a fine season would end like that. PoDAcH K M 1 4 47 4 n B -:R .W i . Q, Sm 1 fvfwlflt , sf .
