Like the alumni before us we have re- ceived a Wholesome 'and well-balanced edu- cation during our years at St. Wendelin High School. Our pastor, principal, and teachers, like others before them, have spared no efforts in bringing to us the treasures of goodness, discipline, and learning. Yes, we are grateful. It is our earnest prayer that we may hold fast to the ideals that have 'been set before us, and that we may prove ourselves Worthy of the efforts that have been expended in our behalf. ? 1 2 1 I 1 . ..,,, ......,. . Tcm Sheean, Carl Yonker, Pussy Ritzler, Fuss Droll Qoazfdall For all their hours of drill, scrimmage, and skull practice, the Wearers of the Black and Gcld deserved a beltter fate than seven losses in eight tries. But the 'boys didn't let it get 'them down. Week after week they came back for more, and each time they gave the fans and the opposition reason to respect them. They surprised the town in the traditional opener with F.H.S. Definitely the underdog, they made the outcome uncertain until the lack of replace- merits began to take its toll late in the third qa arter. And that was the stcry all through the season. Football is no longer a game for eleven men. Substitutions are more important than they used to be. The Mohawks had a good starting ccmbination, but were short on re- placements. There were three class A schools on the schedule, and all but one of the class B teams represented student bodies larger than the Countyline enrollment., The lone win at the expense of Lakeside was a thriller and the local fans had reason to show their lung power. Even in defeat the Herman machine developed a fancy brand of football which should begin to pay off next season. Hats off to captain lake lacoby and Pussy Ritzler who played four years of varsity football. Page Thirty-Four Sandusky. St. Mary Captain lake Iacoby We They F. H. School spirit was rid- ing high When the boys started off with successive Wins over St. Paul, S't. Ioe, Calvert, and Fostoria High. Lima St. Rose broke the streak, and then, af- ter taking the measure of Bas- com and Carey, the Mohawks lost to the Redmen of High Street after holding a one point advantage with a minute to go. Bascom was tougher the second time around but they were de- railed by a last quarter Mohawk barrage. Gibsonburg, with all- state Shull at the controls, was too hot to handle, and then Cal- vert and St. Ioe pulled succes- We They 27 37 15 29 38 34 19 35 sive upsets in avenging their earlier defeats. The most excit- ing game of the season was the overtime Win off Risingsun, While the Mohawks' best per- formance of the year was prob- ably at Delphos, oven though they lost to the big Blue lays. The Genoa game was the only one in which Coach Herman could relax, as the outcome was comfortably clear from the start. Came tournament time, and St. Wendelin drew tough opposition as Gibsonburg ad- minisltered the knockout blow in the first round. Seven senior players took their last bow in this game, so the reserves will have a mad scramble for start- ing berths next season. Gibsonburg ,..rs. , Bascom .,.,..,............ The noble deeds and expressions, the amusing incidents and sayings would fill volumes. The present space affords room enough only for these random jottings from 1921 to 1947, The history of the school really goes back three quarters of a century. St. Wendelin ele- mentary school was opened in 1873 with lay teachers on the faculty. ln 1887 the Sisters of Notre Dame began their long tenure in the local schools. In the spring of 1910 the first commercial diploma was awarded, and for a decade St. Wendelin High school was limited to a two-year commercial course. A third year was added in 1920 and the 1921-1922 term saw the high school grown to maturity. 1921 The little red brick building at the corner 1 of Wood and College was purchased in 1922 September to accomodate a four-year high school . . . still crowded . . . two additional portables constructed in November . . . It is one of the purposes of education not only to fit the student with a basic ring of keys to knowledge . . . but also to teach him how to make his own keys for all the doors to achievement he will want to open throughout his life. How many keys to achieve- ment are needed? Enough to keep one busy for a lifetime, fashioning them out of knowledge, reason and experience. For no matter how many doors you unlock, there is always another door to even greater achievement still to be opened.
