Page Two vw Zlfmlm 'Ti X Pudluhefl iq '7!ze Swim Glau U! sz. www, JW sczmz ' Qauma, ww 194.2 fbecficalfian It is very fitting that With this fourteenth volume, which might aptly be termed the Victory F1'oslin, We remember our Most Reverend Bishop Who is constantly laboring that We, his flock may, with the help of God, realize the one ultimate victory of the soul over the powers of darkness. We offer this book to his Excellency's untiring efforts to lead us to our Heavenly home, and as a tribute to his ceaseless labors to promote, develop, and perfect the Cath- olic system of education, of which we are proud to be products. As a small measure of gratitude, therefore, we, the class of nineteen hun- dred forty-two, dedicate this symbol of the four years of study, work, and play during the happiest stage of our youthful lives to the Most Reverend Karl loseph Alter, D. D., Bishop of the diocese of Toledo. Page Four The day of High School Commencement, as the word itself signifies, indicates merely a beginning. It is the be- ginning of individual and personal responsibility for the student who enters life on his own. It is the beginning of a practical demonstration of the value of a Catholic high school education. Undoubtedly the students of St. Wendelin's High School appreciate deeply the privilege which they have enjoyed for the past four years, namely the privilege of receiving their training under the inspiration of religion and under the auspices of teachers dedicated strictly to the welfare of their pupils. The gratitude which students naturally ex- perience at this season of the year when their school days are brought to a close should not be merely a mo- mentary thing but rather a continuing attitude of mind and heart. It is a gratitude which manifests itself primarily in living good Christian lives which shall be devoted not merely to selfish interests but to the interests of their com- munity, their parish and the extension of God's kingdom on earth. We expect our boys and girls who have graduated from St. Wendelin's High School to be endowed not only with knowledge but also with virtue. If this be true then the character of their future lives will constitute the most con- vincing proof of the value of a Catholic education. We count upon each and every one of you to furnish this proof of the sacrifices made by your parents, your instruc- tors and your parish. We count furthermore upon your own sense of responsibility to help others through your parish to obtain the same benefits as have been accorded to you. Sincerely with blessing June 2, 1942. Z 80.4.0 , During the past six years, as Principal of St. Wendelin High School, Father Osterhage has always striven to imbue his students with that practical Christian philosophy which will guide them safely through the joys and trials of life, and ever distinguish them as graduates of a Catholic institution of learning. Four years under his priestly guidance as principal, teacher and friend, will be for them an ever cherished memory. We, the class of 1942, will throughout the years to come, do our utmost to prove true to God, to our Country, to our parents and teachers, but above all to our Principal, Father Osterhage. S., a graduate of St. Wen- delin High School with the class of 1932, was ordained to the sacred priesthood at Carthagena, Ohio, on March 8, and cele- brated his first solemn Mass in St. Wendelin Church the tol- lowing Sunday. He is pictured here with the Reverend Ray- mond Osterhage, Principal. Page Eleven We fqae Hardly realizing that our four years as students of St. Wendelin High School are now rapdily drawing to a close, we, although filled with that ex- travagant youthful anticipation of entering into a new kind of life, hesitate on its threshold, reluctant to leave those hallowed walls which have housed our ambitions, our hopes, and our worries during this brief sojourn. During this momentary pause, four years of learning, four years of train- ing, four years-in which we have either molded. ourselves into practical Cath- olics and dutiful citizens, or have permitted ourselves to drift into the worldly realms of self-expression and independence-pass before our eyes in a vivid panorama of truth. The last but most important of those years we have en- deavored to highlight in this, the fourteenth volume of THE FOSLIN, in a brief summarization of its work and its play, its clubs and its classes, so that, in future years, we, as well as those whose toil and care have given us the opportunity for a fuller life, may have reminiscences of the class of l942. Fully cognizant of the fact that our education, of which our student pub- lications, THE WENDELETTE, and THE FROSLIN, have been a vital part, would have been utterly impossible without the wise guidance of our parents, principal and teachers, coupled with the financial support of our patrons, al- umni, and advertisers, we extend to all of them our vote of thanks and sincere appreciation. We are now reminded that America is the only country which is in a position to support and further the work of the missionaries laboring in all parts ofthe world to bring God into the lives of millions of pagan people. In view of this fact, the Mission Society is a most important one. To be a member. the student must be enrolled in the Society of the Propogation of the Faith, and always be ready, both by prayer and sacrifice, to do his part in spreading the kingdom of God upon earth. 1941-1942 OFFICERS PRESIDENT ..r........ ....,............,...........,....,... ,...... In step with the trend of the times, I'm in the Army Now1, strictly a domestic comedy, presents in a humorous way, that modern problem which forces a mother to choose between giving her son to preserve the country she loves, or keeping her son, and losing the country that preserves her. Ma and Pa Robertson's CMary Whitta and Richard Magersl son, Bronson's CHarry Stoner? registration number has been drawn. Ma tries desperately to have him deferred, but in spite of her frantic efforts to marry him off, he is finally drafted. Bronson's friend, Letty Ashbrook CBetty Emerinel denounces Bronson for his weakness and lack of patriotism, and so, in a decidedly dejected mood he leaves for camp. Meanwhile the family's laziness and extravagance increase. Toby Robertson CRobert Bradnerb fifteen year old son, becomes enraptured with Audrey Nayland 1CGeraldine Shoberl. Deanna Robertson CBarbara Ann Firthl insists upon spending money that the family doesn't have. By the time Bronson returns from camp, his attitude has been completely changed. He vehemently shakes the family out of its lethargy, drafts each member into a civilian army, proves to Letty and Granny CMarjorie Kinnb that he is no longer a weakling, puts the family back on its feet financiallye-and then returns to camp to train to fight for the duration for the Country that has given him the chance to prove himself. ' Additional members of the cast include Dale Morrison Cloanne Klinepeterb, a rattle-brained aspirant looking for a husband, Corinna Duffin CEleanora Foosl, a determined widow, Prentiss Roper flames Kinnl, the only one who can legally dodge the draft, and Essie Knapp CMarjorie Schmitzb, a boarding-house proprietress who introduces Ramon Valdez CRichard Abowdl, a government man, to the Robertsons. Besides being an ex- cellent set shot artist, he Was invaluable in controlling rebounds. His varsity po- sition Will be difficult to fill. PHILIP PHIL BOYER Uuniorl Despite the fact that Phil was plagued with injuries throughout the entire season, he combined exceptional speed and a tricky one-handed shot, Phil was contin- ually a scoring threat to his opponents. ROBERT BOB BRADNER iSeniorl Although not a high scorer, Bob earned his first string position by his excellent de- fensive play. Hopping to the first-five from last year's reserves, Bob's improvement was outstanding in the 1941-42 season. DONALD DON STONER lFreshmanl After playing on the second string for the first part of the year, Don managed to Win a guard position on the first-five around mid-season. Don is the first fresh- man in ten years to be on the first-five. HARRY MOOSE STONER iSeniorJ Harry's height and his accuracy from close in made him a valuable asset to his team. Many times, to his opponents dismay, he proved to be a trick shot ar- tist, also. He was high scorer for the city. Height and sportsmanship like Harry's are blessings few and far between. Harry played with the varsity for the past three years. RICHARD ZEKE ZIEGMAN tSeniorl Despite the fact that he did not play full time every game, Zeke was always a scoring threat and a bulwark on the de- fense whenever in the game. ROBERT BOB SHOBER lsophomorej What he lacked in height, Bob made up in scrap. The only sophomore on the squad, Bob should develop into a great ball player within the next two years. HAROLD BOBO SHEERAN lluniorl Iumping from the second string re- serves of last year to the second string varsity this year, Bobo, a center, kept con- stantly in line for a first string berth. Scrap and determination were his two outstand- ing qualities. IAMES HM SMITH Uuniorl Iim was one of the chief point-getters during the 1941-'42 season. Playing a for- ward position, he was one of the main cogs in the Mohawk fast break. His speed will make him even more valuable next year. BERNARD BARNEY ELCHERT Uuniorl Although Barney did not see action reg- ularly, he was always very effective when called upon. Whenever one of the reg- ulars was injured, Barney was always the logical man to fill the vacancy. Barney is a good prospect for next season. Page F 'ty One Earfwtddl '7ea.m Kneeling-Reber!
