lg - The tower of golden memories. Of hopes and ambitions true. The tower wherein our FROSLIN Iook form Is pictured here for you. '7!w I 9 4 l Waadin Pmefufed 64, the Seam 81644 W St. Wemlelw Jlzgh School Qafufwu, wuz: C th C qh Ecli r-in gaaeaxvul We, the class of 1941, present this thirteenth vol- ume of the FROSLIN, not only to summarize the activities and cherished memories of the past school year, but also as a medium through which to ex- press our appreciation and gratitude to all who have assisted in making our school days so beneficial and happy. In parting we extend our heartfelt thanks to our beloved principal. teachers, and parents for the spir- itual guidance and character training they have im- parted to us. We are particularly grateful for having had the opportunity of receiving a Catholic education, We shall never forget St. Wendelin High School which has been such a vital factor in equipping us for our 1ife's work. lt is our hope that the 1941 FROSLIN advertisers. patrons, loyal alumni, and friends will derive benefit from this little year book, May each of you be the recipient of the choicest blessings of our Lady, Queen of Peace, to whom, in conjunction with our vener- able Pastor, we are dedicating this volume. Wada After thoroughly contemplating the question, To whom shall we dedicate our book? we have selected two who are very near and dear to all: namely. our Mother Mary and our reverend pastor, Father Weber. Could anything be more fitting in these times of worldly strife than to hail Mary, our Patroness of Peace, as our guiding light? She is one, who, when- ever we are enveloped in a cloud of darkness, folds us safely within her mantle of love and protects us until the darkness and gloom fade away. And who else could be more worthy of a place in this tribute than our most loving and saintly pastor? He has, similar to our Mother Mary, been a spiritual father to us during our entire lives. When difficulties arose or the go- ing seelried hard, Father Weber was always there with his smile and words of advice and encouragement. As we approach one cross-road after another in life, may the guiding light of Mary and the golden instructions of Father Weber be always there to lead us to our heavenly goal. eu. . Your winning smile and ready wit have lent cheer and happiness to many students. ' X F? Q. 4 I 1 It is at this time that we take the opportunity to sin- cerely thank Father Ruess for his kindness towards us. Although not a member of the faculty, he has always taken a kindly interest in St. Wendelin High and its stu- dents. He is spiritual director of the Blessed Virgin Mary's Sodality. That his efforts be blessed with success is the prayer of the class of 1941. Page Eleven Ma. Zlmm Racine Two years ago Mr. Elmer Bache, who was graduated from Dayton University in 1939, came to St. Wendelin High Szhool as a teacher and athleti: coach. Besides coaching football and basketball, Mr. Bache taught mod- ern history, business arithmetic, economical geography, business English, and physical education. During his stay in Fostoria, Mr. Bache has made many friends both in and out of our school. We wish to ex- press our thanks to him for all that he has done for the students both in athletics and in the class room. 4? Mu. William Siaelcdr In September, 1940, the student body welcomed to its midst Mrs. William Shields, as the high school's new sec- retary. Mrs. Shields will be remembered by the class of '41 as one who was always pleasant, always willing, and always ready to help. Mu lfuuzcunan As directress of the Glee Club, Mrs. Floyd Kinnaman has successfully completed her fourth year at St, Wen- delin. Under her careful guidance many numbers have been learned in unison and in mixed voice parts. In the short time that she has been with us, the students have come to look upon music with a keener sense of appre- ciation. To you, Mrs. Kinnaman, the graduating class wish to express their warmest gratitude and thanks for your in- spiring help and council. lout- llwi-lxw Sendai: Gfadd Uffwwd William Kramb loanne Huth Rita Binkley Charles Bulkowski PRESIDENT VICE-PRESIDENT SECRETARY TREASURER Class Color Purple and Gold Class Motto -- Try, Trust, Triumph Class Flower Yellow Rose Charles Bulkowski Rita Binkley Joanne Huth William Kramb A Eugene Bahnsen H s mind is ever open for som more to learn. Rita Lonsway The Most Reverend Bishop Karl l. Alter again this year during Catholic Press Month, placed the annual subscription drive for the Catholic Chronicle, the diocesan weekly newspaper, into the hands of the students of the Toledo diocese. Based on the old adage, One good turn deserves another, the action in the play begins when Harvey Ames, Iames Shields, becomes resigned to his fate as a bachelor after having been spurned by Dulcie, Mary Whitta, for My- ron Phelps, Robert Bradner. Harvey, an easy going individual, encounters Dulcie's cousin from Oak- ville, Sarah Wood, Rita Binkley, and they bargain to get each other a maie, for Sarah is afraid that she will be an old maid as are four other members of her family. After having met Mr. Quigley, Donald Scharf, Professor Pringle, Emmet Sheeran, and Doctor Dunn, Richard Abowd, Sarah is perplexed when she must choose between them. So also is Harvey, who has been in a quandary about his future partner. His three prospects include Bonnie Watts, Rita Ardner, a girl with a quaint lisp, Gussie Becker, Ioanne Klinepeter, an efficiency ex- pert. and Tillie Love, Rita Lonsway, a sentimental spinster who insists on putting Harvey in the script of her play. as a goatherd. Finally Sarah resorts to the reliable Doctor Dunn as her future husband. Many unexpected quirks arise in the third act. These result in the marriage of Dulcie and Myron, who have been estranged by the town vamp Vera's Ger- aldine Shober, bet with Fern Taylor, Betty Emerine. Fern with her fiance Clar- ence, Eugene Blaser, came to a party for Sarah given by her Aunt, Mrs. Ritter, Margaret Altwies, Dulcie's solicitious mother. Cleo, Catherine Couqhenour, the colored maid, because of her clairvoyant powers, provides the greater part of the comedy. Gracie Palmer, Ioanne Huth, a local girl helps to clear up the situation that resulted when Myron mistook her for Dulcie once at a dance. She and her fiance, Ray, Charles Bulkowski, are also guests at Sarah's party. R. I. Osterhage, principal, was presented in the high school auditorium, Wednesday and Thursday, May 7 and 8. Meet the Robinsons might well have been the title for this unusual com- edy for it was all about the Robinson family and what almost happened to them. Emmet Sheeran was chosen to play the Professor of the musical depart- ment of Hanover Hall, of which Miss Stewart, Margaret Altwies, was principal. While Professor Robinson was attending his uncle's funeral, his daughter lane, Mary Whitta, together with her brother Ken, Robert Bradner, formed a contract with Miss Doray, Betty Emerine, representative of the Metropolitan Producing Company of New York to present Showboat. Tony Spaghelli, Bernard Ireland, the ice man, was bribed to obtain the costumes from the Express Company when Miss Doray walked out. During his absence Professor Rohinson's col- ored servant Uncle Ben, Eugene Bahnsen, refused to be responsible for the children, so they engaged Miss Williams, Catherine Coughenour, to take charge. She could hear no one speak except Pip, Iames Bradner, and he played. so to speak, a Charlie McCarthy role. With that as a beginning, the play advanced at a merry pace. When Miss Stewart, together with her niece, Marcella, Ann Louise Swint, discovered Adel- ine Teague, Rita Ardner: Henry Goddard, Donald Huth, and Ellen Summers, Rita Binkley, rehearsing for Showboat, things took on a totally different appear- ance. ln the end Professor Robinson's dead uncle turned out to be Mr. Dick, Iames Shields, who had been living in the Robinson house ever since the Pro- fessor left for the fake funeral. The play closed with the singing of Roll on Mis- sissippi, Roll On. Page Forty-Three Mmauai American Legion Essay winners proudly pose against Old Glory. Due to lack ot height and experience. the reserve team did not have as much success this season as did the varsity, although their record was eight won and six lost. Of the eleven, five are juniors-f- Dick Ziegman, Les Huth, Chuck Kramb, Bob Bradner, and Stan Tinkovicz: four are sophomores-Harold Sheeran, Emmett Droll, Phil Boyer, and Barney Elchert: and two - Bob Shober and Frank Stevens-are freshmen. This reserve team will be the varsity next year and the year after and if they have the same determination that they have now, we know that St. Wen- delin will have two good teams. Page Fifty-Three lair . tr CAPTAIN IOSEPH lOE RITZLER During his three years on the squad, Ioe was noted for his versatility. His points al- ways came when the chips were down and the going was toughest: his ball-hand ling and his floor work were never med- iocre: his aggressiveness made him a tough defensive man. For these reasons he was chosen honorary captain. MYRON ZEKE ZIEGMAN Zeke helped to round out the five by being on the ball at all times and by slip- ping through points when they were needed most. His position on the varsity will be a hard place to fill. JAMES IKM SHIELDS An excellent dribbler and an accurate passer, lim is a boy whose floor play over' shadowed that of any man on any rival team. In many a game, his baskets made irom past mid-court put St. Wendelin in the lead. He will be greatly missed. HARRY STONER Harry, a junior, took the City scoring title with his heads-up play on rebounds and his remarkable accuracy on pivot shots. His height should benefit him greatly nexi year both on offense and defense. CHARLES TEX BULKOWSKI Although Tex did not play regularly, he was always dependable. His speed and cleverness made it possible for him to score where slower players would have failed. EUGENE GENE BAI-INSEN Though not a regular, Gene's fight and determination kept him one of the Iirst in line for a varsity berth. Bahnsen's will to win and his good sportsmanship was one of the Saints' greatest assets. EDWARD ED SEEBON Starting the season on the reserves, Ed- die soon showed that his scrap deserved a place on the varsity. He will be back next year and we know he will be able to fill one of the places left vacant by grad- uation. IAMES IIMMY SMITH What he lacks in height and experience, limmy makes up for in speed and scrap. The only sophomore on the squad, he should develop into a great ball player. WILLIAM BILL KRAMB Height and faking ability made Bill a dependable ball player. Often he would fake taller players out of position and score when the score was seemingly im- possible. He will be lost through gradua- tion. RICHARD DICK MAGERS Finesse, combined with cool-headed- ness and ability, made Dick a great asset to the team this year and promises to make him a greater one next year. COACH ELMER BACHE Coach Elmer Bache's arrival two years ago has spelled victory and good sports- manship for his scrappy Saints. Coach is greatly responsible for any success the team has achieved these past two years. Good luck in any of your future endeav- ors, Coach.
