nS TIME When it all began in 1954, there were only a house and a barn, but time brings change and, for St. Vincent ' s Seminary, change has meant growth. AS TIME GOES ON, St. Vincent ' s continues to grow. Yet it is not the number nor the kind of buildings that make St. Vincent ' s special — it is the PEOPLE. AS TIME GOES ON, faculty, seminarians, parents and friends continue to give of themselves, their time and their support. The future of St. Vincent ' s depends on the continuing support of people such as these. Yes, St. Vincent ' s, in Its 25 years, has grown into a beautiful campus, but more importantly, it has grown into a beautiful COMMUNITY. Rev. John Sharpe, CM. 1954-59 FOR 25 YEARS OF DEDICA TION WE THANK YOU... For 25 years the faculty here at St. Vincent ' s has been involved in every aspect of the lives of the seminarians. A spirit of caring and loving has filled each of the tasks undertaken by the men and women who have served St. Vincent ' s during these many years. It is with a deep sense of grati- tude that we give special recognition to them by dedicating this 25th anniversary issue of the Vin- centian to them. In 1954, Rancho San Antonio, once the home of Mr. and Mrs. Pansini, became the site of the seminary. With further financial support from the Doheny family, St. Vincent ' s grew rapidly in many ways. Through the generosity of benefactors such as these, St. Vincent ' s has been able to contin- ue to train young men for the service of Our Lord and His Church as Vincentian priests and brothers. Mrs. Mary Pansini Mr. Edward Doheny ji ;-- ' ,,-■. . Development of the 14-acre site began almost im- mediately. The original house and barn served as multi-purpose buildings until the classroom building and first dormitory were completed in 1954-55. Ad- ditional buildings were constructed over the years: gym (1954), chapel and dining room (1959), study hall bulding (1964), new dormitory (1967), recrea- tion building (1969). More important than the growth of the physical plant, however, has been the development of a truly Christ-centered Community, a Community built not of bricks, but of caring peo- ple. 1 mt. S m -■ ■ . i E9fi £ W ' . JH H LI Ld J hI r rj Mrs. Estelle Doheny AS TIME GOES ON . . we grow. Throughout its 25 years, St. Vincent ' s has striven to provide the kind of atmosphere and Christian Community en- vironment necessary for growth in faith and the love of God and neighbor. Many young men, sens- ing a call to follow Christ in the priesthood or brotherhood, have come to St. Vincent ' s seeking to discover God ' s Will for them. Of these, nine have gone on to ordination; many others have taken with them the love and spirit they found here at St. Vincent ' s and made them a part of their lives as Catholic laymen. 10 AS TIME GOES ON . . . we celebrate. In a time and age when small numbers and financial difficulties have caused many seminary high schools to close, we celebrate, in thanksgiving, God ' s good- ness to us during our 25 years of existence. Dur- ing that time, God has always provided ... We also celebrate the friendships that have been formed and the lives that have been shared. It is a cele- bration of life at its best... a celebration of Christ ' s life among us... a celebration of what can be. 11 12 FROM THE PAST 14 ■ [ Prayer, conferences, discussion, quiet reflection and the Holy Eucharist are the order of the day each month during the Day of Renewal. It is yet another important opportunity for the Seminar- ians to grow spiritually and to find time for self examination and inner quiet. Through such Days of Renewal the Seminarians strive to Increase their awareness — of themselves, of the Com- munity, of God. 15 SPIRITUAL EXERCISE 16 CLASS MEETINGS §laSs PS The class counselor meetings offer yet an- other opportunity for growth and sharing. Meeting weel ly, with a faculty member pre- sent, the seminarians have a chance to dis- cuss problems, share ideas, confront each other in a spirit of charity, encourage each other, and pray together. It was one of those days. ' Seniors talk witti Fr. Walsh. s p I R I T U A L D I R E C T I V Whereas the rules, programs, and faculty offer the seminarian some external guid- ance for his life here at St. Vincent ' s, spiri- tual direction on an individual and person- al basis offers the important internal guid- ance needed for solid personal growth and maturity. Each seminarian chooses a spiritual director from among the faculty and is strongly urged to consult with him frequently throughout the school year. 20 The Eucharist, a symbol of Life and Unity, is an essential part of our daily lives. We share in the planning, preparation and celebration of the Eu- charist as a most necessary part of our constant effort to build a truly Christian Community. With Christ in the Eucharist as the focus of our day, we strive to carry Him with us into the rest of our daily activities. 21 - ' •;. The semi- nary patch, a symbol of membership, is given to each of the neophytes. It is worn with pride on our blazer, declaring our brotherhood in the family of St. Vincent. The program strives to give the seminarian opportunities to build the Church among men and help the People of God by his witness and service. He is also taught to develop the habit of theological reflection concerning his response to the Mission of Christ, particularly as a seminarian. 43 FRIENDS OF ST. Every day I will thank you; I will praise you forever and ever. The Lord is great, and must be highly praised; his greatness is beyond understanding. Good-byes have always been difficult for me. It ' s a time when something good and beautiful seems to be ending. But is it ending? If we truly love something, then it ' s ours forever and no person or thing can ever keep us separated. That ' s how I feel about St. Vincent ' s. This seminary is part of my life and even if the future draws us miles away from each other, I ' ll always be a part of it and it a part of me. There are so many who have influenced my life in a positive manner. These individuals have helped build the foundation on which I live and will li- ve — and those aren ' t just fancy words; I mean it! A few of these people I ' d like to thank right now. First of all, I ' d like to thank my family who backed me up with love the whole way through. I would also like to thank my other family, my class — J.R., Phil, Joe, and Mike. These four brothers hold a very special place in my heart. Of course, I ' d like to thank the other seminarians and the faculty who have been true friends throughout my four years at St. Vincent ' s. Thanks, Fr. Windsor, for your love and support. Most of all, thank you, Jesus! Remember, a true friend is a friend forever! 96 The time has come to say good-bye, but many are the friends that I will never forget. First, I want to thank my parents, especially my mother for her love and wisdom. I would also like to thank my brothers and sisters for sharing their love, fun and joy. In addition to my family, there are four friends I want to thank for sharing four great years with me. Thanks, Phil, Jose Ricardo, Ralph, and Mike. I will always remember the class of ' 79. I also want to thank the faculty for its consider- ation and understanding. Likewise, I want to thank Alex, Paul, Tony, Pete, and the rest of the junior, sophomore, and freshman classes for sharing the laughs and hardships during the years. Above all, I want to thank God for sharing His love. I hope to love Him more and more throughout my life. If you love something; set it free. If it comes back; it ' s yours. If it doesn ' t, it was never meant to be. .(ii) I 97 hey will tell about all your goodness, and sing about your kindness. merciful, slow to become angry and full of constant love. He is good to everyone and has compassion to all he made. I I N These past four years will be with me forever. It seems like just yesterday that I packed up and came to check out exactly what a seminary was all about and to see if I had a vocation to the priesthood. During these four years, I have learned a great many things, especially about community life. I have also grown in wisdom and love for God. There are many people I wish to thank. First of all, my family, for standing with me through thick and thin. . los amo. I wish to thank my class, Ralph, Joe, Mike, and Phil and all my past classmates, who are not forgotten. Good luck to next year ' s student body, especially to the class of ' 80. St. Vincent ' s is blessed with a truly great faculty. Thank you all, past and present, for your pa- tience, concern, and wisdom. There are many others who deserve to be men- tioned—Ruben H., Mike C, Anna P., The Chain Gang, Las Hermanas Josefinas, the Friends of St. Vincent, all those who supported the team, and the Kenoak Street Gang — to mention just a few. Thank you all. Most especially, THANK YOU, GOD, for all Your love and for bringing me to S.V.S. As my life goes on, I believe somehow some- thing ' s changed — a part of me. During the past four years my life has changed, and St. Vincent ' s has been a very definite part of that change, a change for the better. St. Vincent ' s will always be a part of me also, because of the many gifts of love, friendship, time, and patience given to me. For all these gifts, I give my heartfelt thanks. Fr. Windsor, Joe, Phil, Ralph, J.R., Joe P., I ' ll always treasure your spe- cial gifts of friendship. Thanks also to my family for their support and love. I ' ve always considered good-bye to be a rather simple word. We all us e it many times every day, but now I have to say it to people that I love, and it ' s not easy. So instead of truly saying good- bye, I say the word in the light sense we use it every day, over the phone and at the door. How could I say good-bye to the people and the place that have become so much a part of my life? St. Vincent ' s will always be in my heart and prayers. . .1 love you. . .thank you. . good-bye. ; I The Lord is righteous in all he does, merciful in all his acts. He is near to all who call to him with sincerity. He supplied the needs of all who fear him; he hears their cry and save; them. I will always praise the Lord; let all creatures praise his holy name FOREVER! ■C3 f5 It is I who must sometimes walk Life ' s path alone; but knowing that You are here with me has made my sojourn All the easier. I aspire to grasp the star that shines Within me; and to never forget from When I invisioned its beauty. It is difficult to leave behind something so familiar to you; yet my parting from S.V.S. will lead me to new horizons and new challenges. My sojourn at S.V.S. has been filled with times of both joy and sorrow. If I were to live my high school years over, I would not alter one moment, not one friend. I thank the four men who have shared their friend- ship with me. Thank you J.R., Joe, Ralph and Mike. Thank you Mom, Dad, Gabe, Uncle Morris, Auntie Frances, and Anna for your love and sup- port. I am grateful to everyone who has helped me throughout my four years here at S.V.S. Good luck to the class of ' 80. Joe Roach, don ' t let the God Squad end. Gratitude and much laud go to my professors. Thanks and a lot of love to my estrella. My greatest thanks go to my Lord who has willed all this to be.
