But such resolutions often prove difficult to fulfill, especially when one is preaching it to others. Nevertheless, life becomes more gen- uinely worthwhile, more profoundly beautiful for those who can devote themselves wholeheartedly to such a celebration. To experience the joy of celebration is to be inspired. To instill this joy in others is to inspire. By participating in some ad lib skit, by bringing off an improvised joke or by exercising some extraordinary talent, such as mimicry, a single student can bring joy to many others. For his acts of entertainment are ac- tually catalysts whereby the spirit of the community is enlivened and the morale of the students forever vitalized. Each year the Entertainment Committee works to achieve the unbreakable bond of coopera- tion and unity of spirit at St. Vincent's. Happily, this year's response from our student community has been wholehearted. The Spartan News Part II 1973-74 Season , The I.V.'s performed with characteristic brilliance this season, a 9-3 record for a team that began the season with many in- experienced players. Their success must be attributed, in part, to their own cooper- ative attitude, but mostly to their energetic coach, Fr. Frank Crowley. Their achieve- ments affirm the saying, anything can be accomplished through dedication and work. The J.V.'s were victorious in their first three games. Their winning streak failed them during their next two games. But in their remaining seven games, the I.V. Spartans went undefeated, except for a rematch game with Flintridge Prep. After it was all over, the I.V.'s had turned in the best Junior Varsity Basketball rec- ord in St. Vincent's history. And the man at the reins of this record: Father Prank Crowley. The significance of the program is esoteric -hidden from the eyes of men. It exists in the inner growth which vigor- ous and dedicated play fosters in man. In the development of his inner well-being, a person learns to live patience as he learns to un- derstand the meaning of endurance. So that when difficult and seemingly impossible situa- tions confront him in his future years, that man will be able to cope. The power to cope resides in every mang it is a uniquely human power. And whether on the ball field, in the classroom or in the duties of a Seminarian's life, programs of physical, intellectual and spiritual discipline will always actuate and refine that power of patient, well-meaning endurance. A freshman needs to believe that he will make it through his first year in high school. And to counteract the often demoralizing experiences of first semester classes, the trials of athletics, and the perennial short- comings in forging new friendships out of the many, extra en- couragement, praise and some helpful attention is always in order. 'Butrthough harrowing at times, the events in the life of a freshman are already becoming the foundation for the experiences of coming, more challenging school years. Indeed, to survey the members of the class of '77 is to witness but the beginning of memories which we will remember as the culmination of their first year endeavors here at St. Vincent's. r ulfg-'giu'Ef f'?i2'LQ'ffS?.i 4 ' -.,.....,....' Three of Pather's 26 years in the priesthood have been spent here at St. Vincent's as Latin professor, Vice Rector, and moderator of the sports and physical education program. Perhaps our most highly spirit- ed faculty member, Father has involved himself in most of our student activities. For us, he has been a striking example of a dedicated Vincentian priest. In Sister Bernard's chemistry class, a student learns more than mere formulas and equa- tions. He is being trained, ever so subtly, to search and ex- amine, to investigate and evalu- ate in a systematic way. To train a student's mind in this subtler way requires an instruc- tor of superior quality, one who understands the principles and the goals of education, and one who can make those goals come alive for students. During her five years of teaching chemis- try at St. Vincent's, Sister Ber- nard has never failed to instill in her students and in those around her the desire and the ability to strive for that higher level of understanding that en- lightens the human spirit. The english department took n a fresh appearance this year ith the new head of the de- artment, Mr. Mike Gonzalez. e is a man of great knowl- dge and has an uncommon nack of relating to his stu- ents. His teaching method is hat of compromise. He doesn't ome down to the students level or does he expect the students o come up to his. On the con- rary, it is a very mutual thing n which both sides give until hey both hit the middle, then oth are happy and new doors f learning and maturity are pened. Another one of Mr. onzalez's many good points s his willingness to help the tudents with extra curricular ctivities. He never seems to ind to give his time to help he students. Whether Mr. Gon- realizes it or not he has, his sincerity and concern a great deal of respect the eyes of his students inside out of class. 5 ,qvv ' ' ,31Nf-- 3 l ri KY .Jef l :fs--J , AJ' Mr. Michael Salazar. one of our most gifted teachers, taught courses in History, Biology Civics and Current Events to St. Vincent's students this year. And many times, projects and functions we have planned for the Semi- nary can only be accomplished with the asist- ance of our parents. These people who guide us and by their examples show us what actions are right encourage us to make our own de- cisions. In this encouragement is found that gleam of faith and trust which our parents have in us, and in their faith and trust we have felt their love. But how often is parental love and encouragement only taken for granted and not sincerely appreciated by us? How often, indeed. Here, though, we wish to thank our parents for their love, and if we have at times taken it for granted, it has been our eyes, and not theirs, that have not seen. I ,. 5 iz 1151 - , Z mlm 4. For a Junior must serve as an example of responsibility in his community , . . and his examples must be good ones. One does not simply follow rulesg one must obey rules responsibly. And one does not just study but keeps up with his studies, and progresses. The Junior class has met its year of challenge with strength and purpose, and with spirit. It has proven itself the example for our underclassmen and in doing so has made a successful transition from lower classmen to upper classmen status. JOHN MARKI-IAM ' There are times in the life of a seminarian when he becomes incensed at the whole world, especially with other seminarians. Such times of anguish test one's Christian Charity. My advice to those who will follow me is that they strive to overcome their moments of frustration. GEORGE STEVENS ' If I were to give advice to anyone striving for a vocation in life, I would say, Divide the time 'till you reach your vocation, into steps not more than a year apart. A student whose vocation lies at the end of his school years should make his school years steps and make his goal the next step. Goals should be something you can reach before you lose interest. !tA few of my original sayingsj. Life is like a bed bfi roses, if you rush through it, you will be wounded. often, taking up most of your time binding your wounds, but if you 'go through itslow- ly, step by step and move the branches out of the way one by one, you will be wounded much less often.fIn order to. be successful, you must know yourself thoroughly, your strengths, weaknesses, limits, and reactions in order that you may never lose control over your ac- tions. Not until you can completely control yourself can 'you 'beginjto control the life around you. I fOne can nevergo through three years of High School alone much less three years in .a schoolllike this with- out help from all sides. I would like to thank God' for Sl, BK, KM, LL, AM, IE, and RI who all had .to put forth ,personal--sacrifices in order for me to come to this school. I would like to ,thank God for Fr. I would also like torthank God for the Stevens family, the Houston family, the LaVenture familylandthe sixother families that took me into their homes over the pastdthree years. La Brea Hollywood, CA 90628, 464-31141 l '14 - I Throughout the production of Celebrate 74, our nights have been short-tempered, our worries endless. Yet we feel our efforts rewarded with the publication of this fine book. Of course, our yearbook represents the cul- mination of efforts, the brilliant and the not-so-brilliant efforts of many minds and many talents, even aside from those of the production staff. We take time then to recognize here the many unknowns who have con- tributed the fruits of their talents in the creation of our yearbook. Our appreciation, first, to I5r. William Mahoney, moderator, without whose constructive criticism this year- book would have floundered in the light of clay. Next, our heartfelt thanks to Mr. William Loe for the wealth of special attention he bestowed on us in our moments of desperation. A sincere thanks to Fr. james Cairns whose special permissions enabled the yearbook production staff - nightstalkers, in truth- to burn their midnight oil. We would also like to acknowledge the unflagging work of Mr. Mike Gonzalez who helped make the copy portions of our book more intelligible. And, of course, a nod of appreciation to jose Rodriguez for his talented assistance in the design of our book's cover. And finally, to the multitude of contributors and well-wishers, and to those whose assistance- however small it seemed to them- made Celebrate 74 possible. . , our thanks, friends!
