TABLE OF CONTENTS 1 UNDERCLASSMEN There’s just not one word to describe her. She’s loving — she tries to help solve the pro¬ blems we go to her with. She’s a good sport — she allows us to be silly with her and call her “Bo-Babs.” She has a positive attitude — she knows SVA is great and will not let anything get her down. She does not fear a challenge but instead accepts it and makes it work for the benefit for the school. She is the kind of principal who is everywhere; in the lunchroom, at the dances, and at the activities, not just behind her desk. She is respected by all but she is still approachable. She wants Saint Vincent’s to be a fun place to learn and because of her it is. One could even say that she is “just one of the girls.’’ Mrs. Williamson, with pride the 1987-88 Vincentian Staff dedicates this yearbook to you with pride, for all that you have done for us. We love you! The 1987-88 Yearbook Staff has devoted much time and energy to bring you this year’s Vincentian. Each member has been through Yearbook Class, Yearbook Workshop, and has sold a minimum of SI50.00 worth of ads. In order to meet deadlines, the staffers work almost every Saturday morning. Although wak¬ ing up early on Saturday morning is not everyone’s idea of fun, the sacrifice will pay off when the 1987-88 Vincentian comes out. A Go-Getter is a girl who devotes a great deal of her spare time going to friends, families, and businessmen in the community to sell advertisements. Go- Getters sell a minimum of $300.00 worth of ads. A super Go- Getter raises at least $600.00. This year’s 1987-88 Yearbook Staff would like to personally thank these girls for their dedica¬ tion to the Vincintian. Standing: Olivia Aldin. Amanda Sutton. Among sparkling waves and psychedelic fish, these couples danced to the music of the lnsatiables and eagerly awaited their pictures. Even though there was no paper mache clam shell as a backdrop, the impromp¬ tu treasure chest added great excitement for last minute decorators. The rustle of taffeta, w hich was symbolic of the waves of the ocean, reflected the theme — Enchantment Under the Sea. The 1987 Junior prom court consisted of maids: Amy Batson, Laura Carmody, Margaret Carmody, and Danelle Ware and queen Andrea Juneau. These girls were chosen on the basis of how much time and effort they put into Prom. But the fun did not end when the dance did. Many couples chose to bowl in their formal attire at the All-Star lanes. The evening ended at a Junior breakfast hosted by Emily Neal. Let them look up and see no longer me — but only Jesus!” Cardinal Newman from “Radiating Christ” Suppose I tell you the most “exciting” times of my life have to do with being a nun. Would you believe this? “Exciting” may have a different meaning to me — whatever evokes an emotion of dearness is akin to excite¬ ment. Have you ever been too full of something beautiful and lasting to say a word? Have you ever been close to crying when very happy over something? I believe these are very much a part of joyful excitement. And my being a nun still affects me this way even though I became a religious many years ago. To keep that dedication and dearness close needs constant attention for I fear that without Cod’s help it can be lost from my life. And how can it be called “life” if there is not that “excitement”? Barbara W illiamson: Principal “Worry is like a rocking horse. It keeps you going, but gets you nowhere.” Prom the World’s Greatest Worrier ...bhw Each year I look forward to beginning the sc hool year. There is something inherently WONDERFUL about the start of anything, especially a new school year. Perhaps it is because I handle the start of something better than the end of anything. I became TOO emotionally attached to people and traditions and schedules, so that when it is time to say, “Good bye,” I simply break into little pieces. “The man who fights for his ideals is the man who is alive. ’ 1 chose teaching because I honestly like working with young people. My summers were filled with working at day camps as well as overnight camps. What better way to continue having summers and also to work with young people than to teach them. Spanish has been my favorite subject since fourth grade in Arkansas and continues to be my favorite through the years. From the ninth grade on, I knew I would teach Spanish — and sure enough I am. The compliment to my teaching is having a former Spanish student now teaching Spanish. Mr. Joseph Dormer “You can lead a horse to water, but you can’t always make him drink.” There are so many good things about teaching that it is difficult to single out any one thing. Perhaps the fact of associating with so many young people keeps me feel¬ ing young. Also, teaching encourages suc¬ cess in others and I derive so much pleasure when I hear the success stories of former students. “Impossible n’est pas francais.” It really means that the word “impossi¬ ble” is not in the French vocabulary. Many times, when I was spending my first year in La., I remembered my mother saying that quote. And this is why I never gave up. I did not know any Fnglish and had a lot of embarrassing moments that year. I asked a mechanic to put “candles’ in my car (translation from French for sparkplugs); I told a friend that, no I was not touching her leg after she told me that I was pulling her leg; and I asked a saleslady if they had sofas in the “rest room” in the store! But. after all, we learn by making mistakes. C’eal la vie! Mrs. Elizabeth Franklin Christa McAuliffe said, “Teachers touch the future.” And we do! That is what I look forward to each year in my work. Our students come to St. Vincent’s as children. They leave as young adults. We are fortunate in that we have a part in this metamorphosis. Each day we help students grow. Even setbacks become part of the growth. .As we work to help them overcome difficulties, our eyes are on the future. In no other profession do professionals have the opportunity to work with the total person: the intellectual, social, spiritual, and moral qualities which con¬ stitute the whole person. W ' e are indeed for¬ tunate. We do touch the future. Mrs. Cheryl Bussart This is my first year as a teacher and I am very lucky to have a job teaching such a great group of girls. I graduated from L.S.U. in May of 1987. In 1981, after realizing the poor health condition of the American people, I decided to pursue a career teaching Physical Education and Health. I know that through the medium of education our youth can learn how to main¬ tain a healthy body in today’s society. I’m married and have two children. Patrick Allan, three years, and Brenna Nicole, one year. I love teaching and I look forward to next year. Let ' s Go Girls! Mias Raehelle Gamolsky “Ah. but a man’s reach should exceed his grasp, or what’s a heaven for? from “An¬ drea del Sarto,” by Robert Browning. W ' hy I choose Teaching. When I graduated from college, I did not really choose leaching, or any other profession, for that matter. I did not know what to do, so I did what any self-respecting college student with no job does. I kept going to school. I did know that I wanted to do something in the area of English because I always loved to write, so after graduate school I spent a year writing. I also taught part-time. At that lime I went into teaching with the idea that it was probably something that I would enjoy for awhile, until I knew what I did want. But something happened: 1 got hooked. I’m not sure why I got hooked. There is just something special about stan¬ ding in front of a group of people, knowing that you’re doing something important with your life, and knowing that it’s something you like to do. Ten years later, I m still hooked on teaching, i do not ask myself what I want to do with my life anymore. I ' m already doing it. “You have made us for Yourself, 0 Lord, and our hearts are restless until they rest in you.” (St. Augustine) No matter whatever happened in my life, I always loved everything about St. Vin¬ cent’s; even the fact that as a student 1 went through — not “pink slips,” but memoriz¬ ing poetry and shelling pecans. The years I spent as director of the St. Vincent’s Choir were wonderful, happy and productive years. 1 often look back on those years with love and appreciation for the teachers who encouraged me, and almost “pushed” me into developing my talents. “When you are at peace with yourself, any place is home.” I look forward to each year because this is a pleasant place to work. Everyone treats me with respect and kindness. Each day has its own work, but it also holds many unex¬ pected things and 1 try to handle any of them. Mrs. Frances Harral “Nothing great was ever achieved without enthusiasm.” Enthusiasm abounds here at St. Vin¬ cent ' s and that is why I love teaching here. Every year I see the girls striving to do well academically, working together to make their school family closer, and reaching out to their community in concern and love. It is that prevailing commitment to achieve¬ ment and excellence that makes SVA great. Sister Joan W 1 “Whatsoever you do to the least of these, my brothers, tha t you do unto me.” Why I continue to teach: As an Art teacher it is quite rewarding to discover, among my students, previously hidden and great talent for artistic expression. This art experience sets a student on the road to greater appreciation of beauty as she moves through life. There is the added satisfaction, to me, of realizing that, as a religious teacher, I am the Hands, the Heart, and the Verbal Expression of Christ to the ones whom I instruct. “One’s view of life is grounded in personal experience.” There is much to look forward to at the beginning of each school year. For me the most important expectation is the opening of minds to new ideas and additional infor¬ mation. The revelations to an open and growing mind is similar to the blooming of a rose. Beauty and God’s work are revealed in both events. Top Right: Laura and Courtney say “Stick em up. Center: Polly. Traci, Julie and Anjanette appreciate good friends. It began with a Reunion Picnic and since then, things have not slowed down. Enthusiastic pixies surprised their teachers each month with a little remembrance. Laff-a-Olympics, a Mask Contest, the Wrapping Paper Fund Raiser, and the Christmas Feast high lighted the first half of the year. It all starts in the summer when the girls pul in intense and prolonged practice in preparation for the com¬ petition at a Superstar Drill Team Camp in Kilgore, Texas. Though Camp is hard and painful, the reward comes in the fun, the excitement and the well-earned trophies brought home. This year there were three of them as well as numerous ribbons. Per¬ forming in the Pierre Bossier Mall is also an annual tradition. Though not chosen as one in the top five, the team performed excellently. The Spirit of the girls continued throughout the year. They danced their way at Volleyball Pep Hallies, at half time or the Shreveport Captains, for SVA Open House, and for the Centenary Gents basketball game. Underlying all the hardwork are the ideals of team work, perseverance, and dedication as well as the fun and the making of friends. Denise Sepelvado deserves the undying love and gratitude from the team for her unflagging energy and great talent. Sponsored by: Ware Enterprises Members of the Danceline are: A. Moore, C. Lewis, D. There are about fifteen girls on the team ranging in levels of ability from a beginner to a pro. The girls practice for an hour on Monday, Friday, and Saturday at Querbes and can receive instruction from the pros there and from their coach Mrs. Bussart. The tennis team is in progress during the months of February and March. Matches with various area schools are scheduled. GOLF The golf team is a new addition this year to SVA sports. It is coached by Mr. Domier and members include: Traci Moore, Kim Maranto, Ginger Miller, Olivia Aldin, Amy Batson, Susan But¬ cher, and Mary Guth. They are practicing and preparing for golf tournaments. Many of the girls who have never played before are proving to have a real talent for the sport. Though golf is fun it also is an experience in discipline. This makes it a valuable sport for anyone. ' Ml The 1987-88 Vincentian Staff wants to thank every student and faculty member for their cooperation throughout this year. It is sometimes hard to gel pictures to coincide with everyone’s schedules but all of you were willing to help and we recognize the efforts you made. This Vincentian Staff is so proud of the 87-88 version of the yearbook and we hope that you will enjoy it as much as we will. We also would like to show our gratitude to Sister Rita. She has been there for us anytime we needed her and her sacrifices are appreciated by us. Finally, as Editor. I would like to commend all the girls on the Year¬ book Staff. It is because of their dedication that we have this yearbook. There were moments when the staff thought we would never meet the deadlines, but we did and now our hard work has paid off. Thank you, once again for all of your support. This GENERIC YEARBOOK is for you. — Andrea Juneau A Adgale.
