At St. Vincent’s? That ' s what I said. I thought the girls were all books, blazers, and brains, but I was wrong. I went to the Junior Talent Show. What an experience! From the Silvers to the Killer Bees, I was thoroughly entertained. Along with the wild antics of the Juniors, there was a great deal of talent on display. Tammy Bone was named most tal¬ ented; Jeannette Fox was most entertaining, and LeaAnne Elrod tied with Nancy Zaffater for most original. The entire affair was co-ordi¬ nated by Junior Sponsor Ms. Galloway. Because of her example of charity, patience, and Christian kindness, we, the editors wish to dedicate the 1978 Vincentian to Sr. Teresa. 98 The Quiet Side We at St. Vincent’s associate the different parts of the school with the smiling faces of our friends, but sometimes we must look at the quiet, emptiness of the school after hours. . . 99 Student Council Makes ' 78 Both Fun and Interesting. If so then you have obviously been a student at S.V.A. during the strange but interesting year of ' 78. During this administration Deirdre Waitt reigned supreme with the curious court of Terry, McCauley, Welter, and last, but certainly not least, Povinelli. Too much went on in this wacky year to describe in detail, so I will gloss over a few momentous occasions. Do you remember the culture assemblies? the Operation RAWC that made three times as much as any other funfest? the Teacher of the Quarter assemblies a la This is your life?” the bimonthly lunch treats? the hidden treasures? the delicious faculty dinner? Woodstock’s funeral? the S.C. Wacky Week? the 50’s day? the Puzzle Program? the Intermurals Organization? These are just a few of the new ideas this year’s Student Council came up with for the enjoyment of all. They provided a hilarious year of fun and frolic while retaining their dignified image(?). Like last year, the class was given the opportunity to work on the 1978 Vincentian. The class contrib¬ uted to the yearbook as practice for the 1979 Vincentian, which they will staff. 106 AND STAFF A yearbook is many things — a review of the year — a pictorial account of events and people — an attempt to present the best memories of the year. Here it is — the 1978 Vincentian. May you enjoy it as much as we have. Elizabeth Jones Editor 107 Drama Club . . . This year the Drama Club reached out to the whole student body, stressing both technical and acting aspects of theatre. The year got off to a bang with the second annual SVA-Jesuit Halloween party. The fall production, The Man Who Came to Dinner, was a huge success. We need not mention the fun all had in production. In the spring, members helped with Jesuit’s production of Hamlet. The year was a successful one, and under the leadership of sponsor Mrs. Sarah Serio, the Masquers will continue to grow and prosper in future years. — Elizabeth Horne From Right — E. Home, D. GALS Give a Lot of Service GALS Club is the service organization under the sponsorship of Mrs. McGaha. GALS has been very active and has contributed much to the school and the community. Projects have included Brooks Street Picnics, service at the Junior League Rummage Sale, the Red River Revel, and other projects associated with Sr. Margaret and the Christian Service Program. In order to remain in GALS, members must achieve 15 hours of service each semester. These girls should be commended for their willingness to serve those in need. — Caroline Carmody C. Zaffater, L. St. Vincent’s Spanish Club with its energetic sponsor Mrs. Smith got off to a great start with a hayride, bonfire, and weiner roast at Magenta Plantation to which many Spanish speaking families were invited. In Operation RAWC, the Spanish Club successfully ran the Bingo. Shortly before Christmas the club had workshops to make puppets and booklets in Spanish and English for the children in Saltillo, Mexico. A Three Kings Party was also held, and enjoyed by all. Officers Melody Voss and Sarah Flowers led the toga clad club to spirited, fun times such as Fun Fest and lunch treats. In intramurals, Latin Club became one third of ‘‘Triple Threat” with Drama and Debate. It is apparently obvious that our beloved Latin Club has had a highly successful year. This unique club of artists and painters have done much to promote the arts at S.V.A. They worked at the Red River Revel, and participated in many local art shows, particularly the Caroline Dorman Art Show. This club ' s members may well be the future Rembrants and da Vinci’s of America! YACA Officers: Jenni Giddens — District Governor, Becki Byrd — President, Susan Sicard, — V.P., Janet Soloman — Secretary, Katherine Smith — Treasurer, Linda Oliver — Parliamentarian, Laura Noland — Reporter. 114 Resolved: Debaters Are Winners! The Debate Club this year was full of winners! Although small in number the club made up for its lack of quantity with its quality. This year’s champion debaters were Ann Katzenstein, Lillian Fouche, Ellen Gautier, Beth Povinelli, Missy McDonald, and Shannon Terry. These speakers were dauntlessly led by President Ellen Gautier, Vice-President Shannon Terry, and Sec.-Treas. Beth Povinelli. The Debate Club continued its winning ways by placing in every tournament they attended. 1978 was a truly successful year for all members of the Debate Club! 115 Newspaper The purpose of a school newspaper is to provide students with the opportunity to learn the fundamentals of newspaper work. It also gives students the chance to have their own creative work published or to voice their opinions on controversial subjects. By being on a newspaper staff students learn responsibility and accuracy. Besides being an aid to education, the Li ' l Vin hopes to have brought an added pleasure to life at S.V.A. — Elizabeth Milazzo Mr. Antee ' s Angels Who could take mice, biorhythms, brain waves, and photography and bring them all together? The Science Club, of course! Mr. Antee and his incomparable group of mad scientists have made this year one full of fascinating experiments and investigations. But Science Club did not only follow intellectual pursuits, they also took part in intermural sports. Calling themselves “Jerry’s Germs,” the Science Club’s team contributed much to the success of Intermurals. The Science Club had a very profitable year in 1978! 117 Marching Squad Keeps Spirit High Spirit? Enthusiasm! Get-up- and-go! These words aptly describe S.V.A.’s high-stepping Marching squad, the Flyerettes. This dedicated group attended Marching camp this summer, practiced in August, and worked hard after school in order to become a top notch drill team. But their efforts were rewarded and the Marching Squad performed a series of excellent half-time shows at football games. All in all, the Marching Squad had a highly successful season! Marching Officers: Jayne Ann Pistorius, Judy Cowden, Madeleine Sardisco, Leann Reyenga, Kathy Kerlin, Cynthia Smith, Deirdre Waitt, Terri Ryan. 120 Pep Squad 1977 True, there were many cheering Jesuit fans attending Jesuit games this year, but it would be hard to find a group as spirited and peppy” as this year ' s Pep Squad. These lively little freshmen, bedecked in the blue and white Jesuit colors, cheered their hearts out for the Flyers. 124 1977 FLYERS ARE SHOT DOWN BY THE RED BARON FOOTBALL. . . The Dedicated Dribblers The 1978 Jesuit Basketball Team dribbled” its way into the hearts of many Jesuit fans as a group of hardworking, dedicated basketball players. They both played well and enjoyed themselves! 128 JERR Y’S JUMPERS The 1977-1978 gymnastics team learned that perseverance is a way of life. The team strove for perfection all year round . . . even through those cold winter Saturday mornings. The excellent facilities and the superior coaching by Mr. Antee are helpful factors in the squad’s learning experience. The seats were vacant and the air hung with emptiness. No life here. We then returned to the auditorium when it was supposedly full. True, the seats were now occupied, but after looking closely, we decided there was again no life here. Looking about the foyer, we could discover no sign of habitation. Spike suggested that since it is the custom at SVA for books left in the foyer during an assembly to be carted away and reimbursed only after the payment of a quarter, perhaps the students were left in the foyer and they had been carted away! Determined to prove that life did exist at SVA, I went into the office to ask for help. No help was forthcoming. I I ’ r (til 4 136 Spike had another bright idea. If we were trying to find life, why don ' t we look in the Lost and Found? We had heard Sr. Teresa was very helpful in finding lost articles. We were disappointed, however, when we went to lost and found, for we could not only find no life, but we could not even find Sr. Teresa. “Perhaps we could find someone in the Home Ec kitchen,” I said as my stomach growled. We entered the empty room and found no life. We did see traces of half- eaten food and drink, however, if there had been life here, it had left in a hurry. After a moment of guilty hesitation. Spike and I wolfed down the remains of the cooking. We decided to check out the bathrooms. But, alas, no life here, either. At St. Vincent’s? Stud ncent’s? Student Life? ’ Student Life? We encountered no people on the stairway, but we could faintly hear the sounds of girls, tromping up and down the stairs. It seemed life had once existed at SVA but only the eerie echoes remained. I edged a little closer to Spike. This spooky feeling was intensified when we reached the upstairs hallway. Faint echoes of slamming lockers, gossipping girls, and laughing students could be heard, but we saw no one. Next, Spike and I went into the school library. Rows upon rows of books greeted us — but no people! 138 The Art Room was next on our list of places where life might exist. After meeting this group, we decided life did exist in the Art Room! We went outside to the huge metal monstrosity called The Gym.” No life here, either. Peeking into the typing room, we discovered typewriters but where were the typists? Not only could we not “audio” any students, we could not visual” them either. We then went outside to see if anyone was on the marching field. No one could be found. Then, forty girls in gold with drums suddenly appeared! I blinked my eyes and they were gone. Was it my imagination? I looked over at Spike. Did you see anything out there just now?” I asked, not wanting him to know I was seeing things. “No, I especially didn’t see any girls in gold with drums suddenly appear and disappear out there!” Phew! How would you make arrangements for the big ball game? How would you contact your friends for help with your homework? How would the young men make their dates? How would the young women break them? The telephone has become a necessary part of the American way of life. And, at Western Elec¬ tric’s Shreveport Works, we make more tele¬ phones than any other facility in the world. Western Electric is proud to be a part of the Ark. La.Tex. and we are proud of today’s stu¬ dents who will be tomorrow’s leaders. Only through a quality education can you be pre¬ pared to assume this position. As John Denver puts it in The Eagle and The Hawk’’: Reach for the Heavens; hope for the future and all that you can be, not just what you are.” Our employees — some of whom attended Saint Vincent’ Academy — have made Shreve¬ port the Telephone Capital of the World.” Perhaps you will help us continue this tradition when you complete your formal education.
