But, everyone agrees it has been an experience. Friendships have developed, the class has become unified, and all have grown as individuals. The time at SVA has come to an end. But, despite the loss of interest, direction, and ideals many felt during the last year, the SF.NIORS of ’76 will work to establish and reach goals, contemplate opportunities, and achieve dreams. Betty Wiener Susie Wise Christine Zaffater 92 Underclassmen A school is only as strong as its faculty. Through various circumstances this year, the student bcxly came to recognize the strength of their administration. The teachers of S.V.A. have shown a genuine concern for their students, particularly in their involve¬ ment as sponsors of organizations in addition to their teaching. Administration 95 Administration ' 76: A Personal Approach Too often the administration is associated only with authoritative figures, relentless rules, and impossible assignments. Yet, in viewing the faculty one must consider that the strength of the school rests upon the stability of its leaders. The faculty, justifiably, expects much of the student body. The pupils are endowed with diverse abili¬ ties which can best be developed within an atmosphere outlined by rules and regulations. Within this administra¬ tive framework a basic philosophy expresses itself through varied personalities. Each teacher is an individual, not the embodiment of a stereotyped image. The yearbook staff wishes to portray faculty members with their own unique ideas and characteristics. 96 Administration MOTHER SUPERIOR SISTER MARIETTA WELSH SISTER MARY GRACE LKGANO MAINTENANCE SI TTRMAR VE TORY MRS GILL MR. The highly competitive atmosphere increases the value of each honor and award. All hon¬ ors and awards represent intense effort and ultimate dedication. Honors 103 National Honor Society: Character, Scholarship, Leadership Service The purpose of the National Honor Society is to create an enthusiasm for scholarship, to stimulate a desire to render service, to promote leadership, and to develop character in students. The story of the invention of the telephone begins officially on the night of March 10, 1876: Mr. Wat¬ son, come here; I want to see you! These historic words, the first sentence ever transmitted over an electric telephone, were uttered by Alexander Graham Bell when he accidentally spilled acid on his clothes. The acid was part of the transmission apparatus, called the Liquid Telephone ; the receiver was a tuned reed. From the beginning, the telephone has grown to become a necessary part of everyday life. In 1976, the Bell System has nearly 120 million telephones in service. Worldwide, there are about 350 million tele¬ phones in service, 99.5 per cent of which can be easily reached by the Bell System. Western Electric The Shreveport Works of Western Electric plays a significant role in the telephone story. Right here in Shreveport, we manufacture over half of all new telephone sets for the Bell System, giving our city the distinction of being the Telephone Capital of the World. Our 5,400 employees will continue to provide South Central Bell and the other Bell companies with quality telephones and related equipment. Western Electric ' s Shreveport Works: We ' re part of the Bell System . . . We also give much thanks to Edward Wilson, Brad Campbell, and Charles Coutret of the Jesuit Flight Staff for all the pictures they gave us. Acknowledgement is gratefully extended to Mr. H. O Wiseman and George Shorter for their assistance in the development and printing of our pictures. 228 Acknowledgements TIME ... so many things to so many people ... we all discuss it, yet we cannot define it, we try to save’ ' it, yet we cannot hold it. Time is the number one obsession of our generation — will we harness time as a servant, or be its slave? . . . only time will tell. . . In the short span of a school year, we come to the realization that time can be either friend or foe, helper or hinderance. We see that in pleasure time flies; in pain it creeps. In retrospection, we view the school year as a whole; the minutes and hours which seemed critical at the time have merged into insignificance. We, the Vincentian Staff, sought here to capture the highlights of the last nine months — the laughter, the tears, the ups, the downs, the serious, the frivolous — for these are the facets whose bright reflections we will long remember as th school ear Time is beyond our grasp, for it is a fiction of man’s invention. But we hope that this volume will always rekindle those memories of Our season.
