Foreword PEACE THROUGH LOVE Today’s world situation is crucial! It is a state of confusion and turmoil: the crime rate is soaring, coun¬ tries are constantly disputing, men are fighting their brothers. It seems that peace has practically deserted us! With this frightening thought in mind, the 1966 Vin¬ centian Staff has chosen “Peace through Love” as the theme of this yearbook. It is our desire that through the grace of God and a conscientious effort on the part of each of us peace may have a more evident existence in our lives. In accordance with this theme we have added this thought-provoking prayer: “Lord, make me an instrument of Your peace. Where there is hatred, let me sow love; where there is injury, pardon; where there is doubt, faith; where there is despair, hope; where there is darkness, light; and where there is sadness, joy. 0 divine Master, grant that I may not so much seek to be consoled as to console; to be understood as to understand; to be loved as to love; for it is in giving that we receive; it is in pardoning that we are pardoned; and it is in dying that we are born to eternal life.” —Saint Francis of Assisi

Principal 9 s Message Seniors of the Class of Sixty-Six: Your graduation from St. Vincent’s marks another important milestone in your lives, and perhaps your class will be challenged as no other group of young women completing their studies with us has ever been. All of you are inheritors of a revolution with the speed of change in our times rivaling the speed of light. This involves efforts to peace and understanding in a world that asks for stability, responsibility, and creativity. My final words of counsel to you are: BE HOLY: BE ZEALOUS: BE DARING; BUT DO NOT CUT YOURSELF OFF FROM TRADITION. As Most Rev. James P. Shannon, President of the College of St. Thomas says: “The danger that exists in any profession is that the reformer or young turk, in his ex¬ uberance, will cut himself off from tradition. To be a reactionary or a crusading liberal requires neither talent nor discipline. The first needs only a dissenting view; the second, a good digestion. To chall enge tradition, one must first respect it, know what is wrong with it, be aware of its virtues and see himself as the current representative of it. If all one knows is the past, he is an antiquarian stuck in the past. If all one knows is the present, no man will bother with his ideas. May The Holy Spirit inspire you to be worthy of this world’s opportunities so that your final inheritance, blissful union with God, will be fulfilled. Devotedly in Him, 6
