St. Vincent ' s Academy Volume XXVIII Shreveport , Louisiana Editor in Chief: Debbie Garland Assistant Editors: Marilyn Karam and Suzanne Waterman 1966 V I N C E N T I A N Dear Sister Rita. One of our deepest regrets in editing this VINCENTIAN is our inadequacy in expressing not only the feelings of the Student Body toward you, but our feelings most of all. What you mean to us is far more than words can express. Perhaps the Freshmen and Sophomores know you as a General Math teacher, or maybe as the teacher of the yearbook and newspaper classes. The Juniors know what a fine class sponsor you have been, and what an excellent Religion and Algebra teacher you are. Knowing that you have sponsored Li’l Vin as well as Quill Scroll, it is easy to account for your success with the Juniors and Seniors. Even Laddie knows what a fine person you are. Because of your burning energy and green thumb, the beautiful flowers, trees and foliage surrounding the school are now a tremen¬ dous asset beautifying our campus. As maintenance manager you have certainly kept the school running smoothly all year. As Teacher Favorite, you have merited a very special place in our hearts. As yearbook sponsor, we know from experience that you are “top- notch”. In dedicating the 1966 VINCENTIAN to you, with all the time, work, and frustrations that go into creating a yearbook, w r e personally want to thank you for the interest and guidance you have shown us repeatedly throughout the year. But most of all, Sister, we want to thank you for being the patient, kind, and truly understanding person that you are. Sincerely, The 1966 Vincentian Staff Z0 H O-DflD Foreword PEACE THROUGH LOVE Today’s world situation is crucial! It is a state of confusion and turmoil: the crime rate is soaring, coun¬ tries are constantly disputing, men are fighting their brothers. It seems that peace has practically deserted us! With this frightening thought in mind, the 1966 Vin¬ centian Staff has chosen “Peace through Love” as the theme of this yearbook. It is our desire that through the grace of God and a conscientious effort on the part of each of us peace may have a more evident existence in our lives. In accordance with this theme we have added this thought-provoking prayer: “Lord, make me an instrument of Your peace. Where there is hatred, let me sow love; where there is injury, pardon; where there is doubt, faith; where there is despair, hope; where there is darkness, light; and where there is sadness, joy. 0 divine Master, grant that I may not so much seek to be consoled as to console; to be understood as to understand; to be loved as to love; for it is in giving that we receive; it is in pardoning that we are pardoned; and it is in dying that we are born to eternal life.” —Saint Francis of Assisi TABLE OF CONTENTS Faculty 7 S VA Day to Day 15 Classes 25 Activities 73 4 A L w Sw i 1 r Features 97 Ads 119 i zi Principal 9 s Message Seniors of the Class of Sixty-Six: Your graduation from St. Vincent’s marks another important milestone in your lives, and perhaps your class will be challenged as no other group of young women completing their studies with us has ever been. All of you are inheritors of a revolution with the speed of change in our times rivaling the speed of light. This involves efforts to peace and understanding in a world that asks for stability, responsibility, and creativity. My final words of counsel to you are: BE HOLY: BE ZEALOUS: BE DARING; BUT DO NOT CUT YOURSELF OFF FROM TRADITION. As Most Rev. James P. Shannon, President of the College of St. Thomas says: “The danger that exists in any profession is that the reformer or young turk, in his ex¬ uberance, will cut himself off from tradition. To be a reactionary or a crusading liberal requires neither talent nor discipline. The first needs only a dissenting view; the second, a good digestion. To chall enge tradition, one must first respect it, know what is wrong with it, be aware of its virtues and see himself as the current representative of it. If all one knows is the past, he is an antiquarian stuck in the past. If all one knows is the present, no man will bother with his ideas. May The Holy Spirit inspire you to be worthy of this world’s opportunities so that your final inheritance, blissful union with God, will be fulfilled. Yearbook w ork ... hard work, ... important decisions, consists of ... and long-range planning. As the last picture is cropped and the last layout drawn up, the 1966 Vincentian has become a reality, a culmination of planning, writing and picture taking. It is our hope that each girl will find herself represented somewhere among the preceding pages in which we have tried to bring to life one year at St. Vincent’s. Looking back at the help we received, we wish to thank personally each of these. Thank you, Mr. Shorter and Gayle Hansen for the fine pictures you took for us. Thank you, Mr. R. S. Waterman and Pam Kelly for the superb art work you did for us. Thank you, Mr. Cobb; you’ve been an excellent representative to us from the Taylor Publishing Company. Thank you, Sr. Paula Marie for the cooperation you gave us through the year. Last, but certainly not least, thank you Sr. Rita for all you’ve done for us! Editing this yearbook has been an exciting, rewarding but at times nerve-racking experience. On behalf of our staff and ourselves, the editors, we hereby express this hope—that you, the student body, enjoy the 1966 Vincentian. We have done our best for you!
