Vincentian Staff Jane Courreges EDITOR Gwen Hutchins Ann Scalf ASSOCIATE ASSOCIATE PHOTO EDITOR ART EDITOR Jackie Baker Patty Pope CLASS EDITORS Sharron Holloway Judy Young FEATURE EDITORS Vivian Dunn, Bonnie Henry, Kay Michaels ACTIVITIES EDITORS Susan Prados BUSINESS MANAGER Diann Huckaby Toni Messmer ASSISTANT BUSINESS MANAGERS foreword As the rose blossoms, the desert shall rejoice. The Vincentian has selected this theme to signify the development of each student. Upon entering, she is but a bud, waiting to absorb the fruits of her environment. Upon leaving, her knowledge and maturity are blossomed like that of a rose. She ventures forth as an apostle of Christianity, doing her part to carry beauty into life's desert. 'Dedication A gracious, smiling, dignified lady walks down the third- floor corridor every morning from Monday through Friday. Her steady pace shows integrity and firmness of character. A deep gaze radiates the dedication of an invaluable teacher and a truly Christian woman. She imparts priceless knowledge which guides her students on the path of Christian living. With respect, admiration, and sincere gratitude for her ceaseless efforts to develop the capacities of all her students and to prepare them not only for the present life but for the life .hereafter, we, the Vincentian Staff of I960, deem it fitting and proper to dedicate this Vincentian to Miss Nellie Browning. CHARLES P. GRECO Bishop of Alexandria 8 FATHER KEVIN NOWLAN, S.J., Chaplain of St. Vincent’s Academy FATHER H. CLINTON TEACLE, Diocesan Director of Schools faculty Near a barren desert, there sprang up from God’s earth a tiny rose. The sun's rays draw it heav- enward while the dew cleanses its petals of dust. And the desert re- joiced that life had filled its emptiness. As the sun and the dew nourish the infant rose, so our teachers lead us into mature Christian womanhood. Inspiring and guid- ing us, they seek to make us Christ- bearers, so that the world too may rejoice that life has filled its emptiness. Reverend Mother Mary Clarissa Superior of the Daughters of the Cross Dear Lovely Ladies of St. Vincent’s: Because of your Catholic education, you and millions of students throughout the world will truly be the light of the world. Our Lord says to you as He said to His apostles: So let your light shine before men that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in Heaven.' Affectionately in Him, Reverend Mother Clarissa II May you always have the courage, dear girls, to do the things you know' are right. Be unselfish if you would be useful and happy in your usefulness. Cultivate thoughtfulness of others and peace of soul. Have a deep faith and a loving trust in God; add humility and a personal love of Christ. If you follow' this recipe, you will find happiness in time and in eternity. God bless you now and always! My love and prayers are with you.” SISTER MARY BERNARDINE, D.C. Assistant Superior Bear always in mind that the only way you can live a truly successful life is to live according to God s standards, to live the Christ-life. Pray daily to the Holy Spirit for light to know God's w'ill in all things and for the strength to do it at any cost. Devotedly in our Lord,” SISTER MARY ELIZABETH, DC. High School Principal 12 My sincere wish is that all of you remain loyal to the efforts of your teachers to instill in you lasting virtues of true womanhood.” SISTER VERONICA, D C. Classes The desert rose soon begins to mature in God's sight, fulfilling her place in the Almighty One's eyes. With each season her newly budded petals grow and absorb light from around her, and her leaves unfold to gather knowledge and understanding. This rose is God’s, and God seeks to help His little one strive for her eternal goal, her place in His almighty will. As each of nature's four seasons develop the rosebud into a beau- tiful bloom, so the four years of high school mold us into true images of Christ. Realization of our final goal is fulfilled as each day is lived for Christ. As the rose lends loveliness wherever it is, so the participating student enriches the lives of those about her by giving herself in everything she does.
