Text from Pages 1 - 108 of the 1956 volume:

In introducing the various aspects of Christian education at St. Vincents and in acquainting you with the workshops in which the students are developed spiritually, intellectually, and socially, we present Reflections of Christian Womanhood. We, the Vincentian staff of 1956, do lovingly dedicate this book to Father Kevin Nowlan, S.J., our beloved Chaplain. His years at St. Vincent's have been devoted to the molding of Christian girls into Christian women. He has unceasingly aided us in imitation of the Blessed Mother, ever placing before us the goals of Christian education. Gontents Here are mirrored ail the reflections of the Christian woman—intellectually, spiritually, and socially complete. The minds of the students are developed with the mind of the Church; their souls are tuned to the voice of God and His Mother; their bodies are engaged in wholesome activities; their hearts arc happy in Christian social life. MOTHER CLARISSA, D. C. Superior General of the Daughters of the Cross Sister Bernardine Sister Dorothea Sister Agnes Ruth Sister Laurentia Sister Rose Marie Mrs. Caughey Our beloved sisters, the Daughters of the Cross, and our devoted lay teachers serve as the hands of God as they direct and mold their students in perfect reflection of Christian Womanhood and perfect imitation of Mary. The forceful influence of our teachers is far reaching. Sister Miriam Sister Mary Ann Miss Daly Miss Phillips Mrs. Pratt This is the molding place of intellectually and morally whole Christian women. Students, in the care of skilled and devoted teach- ers, are trained to think with the Church and are formed in Her standards. The brightest facet in the Reflections of Christian Womanhood is that of spirituality. The Sodality, by means of sanctification of self and others, integrates spirituality into the lives of its members. It holds before them the Immaculate Model, Mary, and her Divine Son, ever encouraging a life of perfect imitation. I Cecilia Roach Secretary Janet Turgeon, Prefect Paula Martin, Vice-prefect icers Frances Tynan, Treasurer Loretta Caplis, Moderator Donna Jones, Moderator Veronica Porteous, Moderator Sr. Helen Marie, Faculty Moderator A vital and integral part of life at .St. Vincent's is the Sodality. More than just an organization, it is a way of life; but as an active association it aims at fostering in its members an ardent devo- tion to the Blessed Virgin Mary. With sanctification of self, sanctification of others, and defense of the Church as the three-fold end and purpose, the Sodality strives at bringing the whole world to Jesus through Mary.” The Sodality is not a pious union, nor a confraternity, nor a social club; it is an organization with the main task of forming lay apostles who will apply the fruits of their formation to the work of the church. In seeking its members, the Sodality of Our Lady seeks quality, not quantity. The duties of the Sodalistsare to at- tend with interest the scheduled meet- ings and to live in accordance with the rules. Spiritually, a Sodalist must use every means in the rules (daily Mass if possible, rosary, meditation) to draw her- self closer to Our Lady. A Sodalist must also be an active Christian in the world devoting her time and energy to helping others. Sodalisrs who live by the rules are one of the greatest forces in the world today for destroying unchristian princi- ples and restoring Christ to His rightful position through His Blessed Mother, Mary. Freshman debater The Choir of sixty voices under the direction of Sr. Rose Marie is an integral part of St. Vincent’s. This year was devoted especially to the study of Church music. Highlights for the 1956 “Chorus Angelorum” were the C enten- nial Mass and the Christmas pageant. Adorned in white robes and gold stoles, the choir lent itself to these and other functions. The St. Vincent's choir is proudly claimed as one of the most outstanding High School choirs in the South. CHOIR ACTIVITIES FOR 1956 CHRISTMAS PAGEANT SODALITY CONVENTION N.S.C. The admiration and appreciation which the staff has received from the students has made the sacrificing of their time and energy to further Christian Ideals worthwhile. On their return to school in September, the journalists were greeted by a new press room which had been reno- vated to provide more space for the hard-working class. To Read Know, and Love Good Books is the aim of this service organization. Through weekly meetings and actual work in the library each member strives to broaden her literary outlook and to open for herself new horizons of study. In the field of social studies, the St. Vincent's student becomes acquainted with the history and government of her own country and those of other peoples throughout the world. World History class combs the earth for undiscovered land with Sr. Agnes Ruth. Mathematics can well be acclaimed as the basis of sounding thinking and logic. It enables one to reason in both ordinary daily problems and those of a more com- plicated nature. The Business Education Department consisting of shorthand, typing, and busi- ness math, plays an important part in the education at St. Vincent's. Christian principles as well as technical knowledge are stressed in these courses. In studying the romance languages, a student shares more completely in the benefits of universal culture. The Knowl- edge of a foreign language and the study of its origin helps one to become more tolerant of other people. Music, as are languages, is from all times and places. It also creates an under- standing which binds together those who realize true music appreciation. Miss Phillips instructs in one of the many phases of the P. E. course. Mrs. Uffleman and class review for test. Learning to care (?) for the patient. The useful course of home nursing was added to the SVA curriculum this past year. The course supplied adequate knowledge so that the student might be of help at home when there is sickness. Honor, sportsmanship, and self-control are acquired through the physical educa- tion program. These characteristics are as necessary as is the development of the b xly. The great outdoors provides the classroom for Sister Dorothea and her biology students. The general sciences open wide vistas to a student who seeks the explanation of life's mysterious depth. Through ti,ese studies she sees God reflected in utmost beauty, and, as in the domestic sciences, is drawn closer to Him. Whether it be through the analysis of a test tube or through the admiration of leaf in the sunshine, girls are constantly reminded of God s omnipresence. Here is the final reflection that complements mind-challenging classes and rigorous activities and mirrors the perfect Christian woman. These are the highlights of the social St. Vincent’s year. These arc the leisure moments spent at St. Vincent's by students seeking a com- plete Christian education. Solemn Pontifical High Mass climaxed Centennial Celebration. Centennial celebration The daughters of the Cross celebrated their 100th anniversary of missionary and educational work in Louisiana, November 9-10, 1955. The Bishop of Alexandria officiated at the Mass. The choir was composed of all the schools of the city conducted by the Daughters of the Cross. A great number of friends and benefactors participated in the celebration. Here our Daughters of the Cross have labored untiringly, endeavoring to repro- duce in the young women under their direction a reflection of the Model Christian Womanhood. Now we must live up to these ideals! Are we as young Christian women convinced of the need of Catholic Education in our surroundings to the extent that we are willing and generous enough to do something about it in a substantial way? The demands can be met spiritually or mate- rially. How are we going to help make the tremendous needs of Catholic Education of Youth a reality? I President, Mrs. A. J. The chief purposes of this club are to foster better relations between the fac- ulty members and parents, and to give material help to the students and school. Such aims are achieved by joint meetings attended by mothers, fathers, and teachers for various fund raising activities. The first large project of the year was the annual bazaar which was held December 1. Proceeds from the various booths and sales were joined with those from the annual St. Patrick's tag day to boost the treasury for the needed expenses. This great convocation of over four hundred girls teaches the duties, privileges, and re- sponsibilities of American citizens, and helps each attending to realize her part in the world of tomorrow. Based on the state constitution, Girls' State operates first of all on a city level, then advances to parish status, and finally climaxes with the election and proclama- tion of state officers. The whole program is conducted largely by the girls, and the campaigning appears to be conducted by professionals, although it is done strictly by the girls themselves. Cooperation is the greatest lesson learned during the seven days on the L. S. U. campus and good sportsman- ship runs a close second. The sisters in charge of board- ing school encourage the girls to thorough scholarship and to a gra- cious social life, to developement of many interests, and to a com- bination of these with an intelli- gent, and ardent spirituality and the courage to live by it.
