i . , E ' O O A V is i when Mother Julie Deschamps, Superior General, and four com- - d - G panions, Sisters Blondin, Brady, Hickey, and Monarque, arrived in Toledo to serve the sick and the orphaned in the dauntless self-sacrificing spirit of their Foundress, Mother d'Youville, this city had a meager population of six thousand souls. Its malaria-infested swamp had earned for it the title graveyard of the United States , but this did not deter the Sisters who were coming in response to an appeal received two years before from Bishop Rappe. Befriended by the Ursulines, who had come to Toledo only a year pre- viously, and aided by the good people of the surrounding community, the Grey Nuns soon succeeded in establishing a house for the sick and the needy, in spite ofa great many obsta- cles. This house, locatedlon Superior Street, was loaned to them by Mr. Valentine Wall. Out- growing these quarters within a year, the little establishment moved into another private dwelling, somewhat larger, on Erie Street. This house was loaned by Mr. F. N. Bakewell. The work grew and progressed so rapidly that in i857 the present building on Cherry Street was started on two acres of land considered then to be located way out in the country . Wing after wing has been added through the years by Sisters to accommodate the growing demand for their services. The School of Nursing was started in l896 with a one-year course includ- ing two hours of class weekly. Tn 1 9 5 5 at the present time our School of Nursing has a three-year approved program with a college affiliation, Psychiatric, and Public Health affiliations, and classes in theory and practice which are held daily five days a week. The original St. Vincent's has reached the capacity of 480 beds, serving patients from Toledo and the surrounding area without regard to racial origin or religious belief. The personnel has increased from one voluntary lay assistant in the beginning to an enormous staff of over seven hundred and fifty. The average stay of a hospitalized patient today is only six days, compared with the three week confinement of many years ago, and the admission and dis- charge rate has increased proportionately. This is the modern St. Vincent's, the first Ameri- can foundation of the Grey Nuns, whose hearts this yearrare filled with sentiments of gratitude and thanksgiving to God for all the benefits and blessings He has bestowed on them and their work over the past hundred years. May they remain in our midst for many more years to come and may their work continue to prosper for the glory of God and the welfare of all those who need their prayers and services. 7
