I want you to know on this glorious day of your graduation that I share with you the joys of your achievement as I have shared with you the strenuous days of a nurse in the making . Three years ago you crossed the threshold of St. Vincent's School of Nursing, and it was amidst tears, smiles, and hopes that you began the dedication of your life to your chosen profession of nursing. Little did you realize then that the Director who so gladly welcomed you had arrived at St. Vincent's just one day before you. I feel, therefore, that we have learned to love St. Vincent's together, and to appreciate its noble heritage of exactly one hundred years of service to suffering humanity attained in this centennial year of l955. , As you bid farewell to your Alma Mater to join the ranks of the one thousand and more graduates of our school, I wish to address you once more. This time,, how- ever, l shall not announce a general assembly, neither will I give you added assignments because you skipped clinical class again, or because that car broke down and made you late. Rather I wish to express the parting thoughts of a friend, which I hope will remain indelibly impressed within you for the rest of your life. My parting message to you, my dear Graduates, concerns the most important subject of all: Love , I will not attempt to prove the obvious: the essential role of love for happiness here and hereafter, but, I would like to stress the extent and im- plications of genuine Christian, love because I feel that this virtue, above all, should adorn the heart of a true nurse. To love means to sacrifice, it implies generosity, courage, determination. The true lover is one who can forget self in order to minister to the needs of others. It is this kind of love which must motivate your life as a Christian nurse, under a three-fold aspect: love for neighbor, love for your profession, love for your God. True love for your neighbor will be manifested when, at 'the bedside of a sick child or of an aging father, you forget your aching feet and your personal comfort for the sake of the patient. Love for your profession will be evidenced by your high ethical standards in the performance of your duties as a nurse, remembering that a life dedicated to the wel- fare of others must never succumb to mediocrity. Your love for God will remain true if you live according to the Christian principles you have learned and abide faithfully by His laws no matter how difficult the circum- stances or how controversial the issues may be. My dear Graduates, be .valiantg be true, be proud of your distinguished title of professional nurse , and never allow any evil influence to tarnish its brilliance. May you ever remain close to Christ and His Blessed Mother. This will always be my sincere wish and prayer for you. Z6
