A former chap- lain of St. Vincent s Hospital, Monsignor Maher has served in many hospital organizations on the local, state, and national levels and he possesses a wealth of personal experience and special abilities that render him particularly well qualified for this new position. ASSISTANT CHAPLAIN Lecturer in Human Relations in Nursing Cut aplains i . , E ' O O A V is i when Mother Julie Deschamps, Superior General, and four com- - d - G panions, Sisters Blondin, Brady, Hickey, and Monarque, arrived in Toledo to serve the sick and the orphaned in the dauntless self-sacrificing spirit of their Foundress, Mother d'Youville, this city had a meager population of six thousand souls. Its malaria-infested swamp had earned for it the title graveyard of the United States , but this did not deter the Sisters who were coming in response to an appeal received two years before from Bishop Rappe. Befriended by the Ursulines, who had come to Toledo only a year pre- viously, and aided by the good people of the surrounding community, the Grey Nuns soon succeeded in establishing a house for the sick and the needy, in spite ofa great many obsta- cles. This house, locatedlon Superior Street, was loaned to them by Mr. Valentine Wall. Out- growing these quarters within a year, the little establishment moved into another private dwelling, somewhat larger, on Erie Street. This house was loaned by Mr. F. N. Bakewell. The work grew and progressed so rapidly that in i857 the present building on Cherry Street was started on two acres of land considered then to be located way out in the country . Wing after wing has been added through the years by Sisters to accommodate the growing demand for their services. The School of Nursing was started in l896 with a one-year course includ- ing two hours of class weekly. Tn 1 9 5 5 at the present time our School of Nursing has a three-year approved program with a college affiliation, Psychiatric, and Public Health affiliations, and classes in theory and practice which are held daily five days a week. The original St. Vincent's has reached the capacity of 480 beds, serving patients from Toledo and the surrounding area without regard to racial origin or religious belief. The personnel has increased from one voluntary lay assistant in the beginning to an enormous staff of over seven hundred and fifty. The average stay of a hospitalized patient today is only six days, compared with the three week confinement of many years ago, and the admission and dis- charge rate has increased proportionately. This is the modern St. Vincent's, the first Ameri- can foundation of the Grey Nuns, whose hearts this yearrare filled with sentiments of gratitude and thanksgiving to God for all the benefits and blessings He has bestowed on them and their work over the past hundred years. May they remain in our midst for many more years to come and may their work continue to prosper for the glory of God and the welfare of all those who need their prayers and services. 7 VENERABLE MOTHER MARGUERITE d'YOUVILLE Foundress and First Superior of the Sisters ot Charity lC-rey Nunsi of the General Hospital of Montreal l7OI -I77I VERY REVEREND Superior General REVEREND MOTHER DOROTHY REECE, s.g.m. I want you to know on this glorious day of your graduation that I share with you the joys of your achievement as I have shared with you the strenuous days of a nurse in the making . Three years ago you crossed the threshold of St. Vincent's School of Nursing, and it was amidst tears, smiles, and hopes that you began the dedication of your life to your chosen profession of nursing. Little did you realize then that the Director who so gladly welcomed you had arrived at St. Vincent's just one day before you. I feel, therefore, that we have learned to love St. Vincent's together, and to appreciate its noble heritage of exactly one hundred years of service to suffering humanity attained in this centennial year of l955. , As you bid farewell to your Alma Mater to join the ranks of the one thousand and more graduates of our school, I wish to address you once more. This time,, how- ever, l shall not announce a general assembly, neither will I give you added assignments because you skipped clinical class again, or because that car broke down and made you late. Rather I wish to express the parting thoughts of a friend, which I hope will remain indelibly impressed within you for the rest of your life. My parting message to you, my dear Graduates, concerns the most important subject of all: Love , I will not attempt to prove the obvious: the essential role of love for happiness here and hereafter, but, I would like to stress the extent and im- plications of genuine Christian, love because I feel that this virtue, above all, should adorn the heart of a true nurse. To love means to sacrifice, it implies generosity, courage, determination. The true lover is one who can forget self in order to minister to the needs of others. It is this kind of love which must motivate your life as a Christian nurse, under a three-fold aspect: love for neighbor, love for your profession, love for your God. True love for your neighbor will be manifested when, at 'the bedside of a sick child or of an aging father, you forget your aching feet and your personal comfort for the sake of the patient. Love for your profession will be evidenced by your high ethical standards in the performance of your duties as a nurse, remembering that a life dedicated to the wel- fare of others must never succumb to mediocrity. Your love for God will remain true if you live according to the Christian principles you have learned and abide faithfully by His laws no matter how difficult the circum- stances or how controversial the issues may be. My dear Graduates, be .valiantg be true, be proud of your distinguished title of professional nurse , and never allow any evil influence to tarnish its brilliance. May you ever remain close to Christ and His Blessed Mother. This will always be my sincere wish and prayer for you. Wohl ' Q X, 2 'X County Health Nursing Pediatric Nursing t. Vlnoent S Alumnae Association On this page are represented a few of the many different types of nursing in which St. Vincent's Alumnae are engaged at the present time. Some members have selected the oldest field of nursing, Private Duty. Others have chosen Institu- tional Nursing as Head Nurses, Staff Nurses, or Supervisors. Some are Instructors in Nursing Schools. Others have selected positions in Public Health, as City, County, or District Nurses, Tuberculosis, Office, or Industrial Nurses. Some are Air Hostesses and Commissioned Officers in the Armed Services of our country. The field of Mental Hygiene has claimed some, while volunteer work with the Red Cross has interested others, A large percentage of the Alumnae have chosen the field of homemaking by becoming happy and successful wives and mothers-a field where a nurse finds ample opportunity for applying all her professional knowledge, skills, and womanly qualities. What varied fields of nursing and oppor- tunities are available to the young graduate professional nurse in this atomic age, compared with the situation a hundred years ago.
