But O'Leary's treasure was different from others, for his Wasn't gold or jewels but something far more valuable, some- thing spiritual, something intangi- ble. O'Leary, Wanting to keep his treasure safe, searched beyond the seas and across a continent. Seeing Saint Vincent High School as a fitting place in which his treasure might be safe, he entrusted it to us. Yes, O'Leary, We have your treasure, and We guard it Well. St. Patrick first used the three-leaf clover to teach his people of the Blessed Trinity. It is to this Apostle of Ireland, therefore, that we dedicate our 1957 Shamrock. May he intercede for us to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost. 4255 Q D S C QW lg- ' KNXXXQ X M Q6 f J X af 'im QI 5 S. Learning the customs of a new school challenge the freshmen of Saint Vincent. But making friends pre- sents no problem. Early in September these students held a box social. Girls supplied lunches and boys provided soft drinks as the couples ate together in the auditorium. Frosh take part in many activities such as the C.S.lVl.C., Vincenteen Boos- ters, Cadet Band, Bantam football team, and intra- mural basketball teams. She's the girl that adds the frosting called cheerlead- ing on the high school foot- ball cake. Cheerleading, a science in itself, keeps the true meaning of spirit alive in the hearts of the team and student body. To be a cheerleader at St. Vincent a girl must have enthus- iasm, showmanship, and leadership. The duties of a St. Vincent cheerleader in- clude decorating the goal posts, leading cheer rallies, and keeping spirit high. Varsity uniforms are white with green pleats in the skirt and green trim. . . . with hope and triumph The varsity band's preci- sion steps and excellent playing during half time shows display Saint Vin- cent spirit at its finest. Many hours of practice are exemplified by high step- ping in the Veterans' Day and other civic parades. The annual spring concert under the direction of Rob- ert F. Lewis draws atten- tion to versatility in every- thing from marches to classics. E E2 ' .. 3 'Qc l 'Q With new light on old faces, the Dean of Akron high school coaches, Eddie Wentz un- dertook the job of building an efficient foot- ball machine. With most of his team return- ing from last year's squad, he set out to place men in their most advantageous positions. After much experimentation he came up with the combination that clicked through- out the season as witnessed by the fact that no games were lost after the opening two contests. Although the Fighting Irish lost the first two encounters against last year's city co-champions, East and Buchtel, they went on to win four games with three straight ties sandwiched in between. With tradition and honor at stake, the Saints met the Cru- saders of Saint Mary in the annual parochial championship game. For the second straight year, both teams received the title, Cham- pion, for their brilliant play that ended in a tie. Through the course of events during the season, the Irish won two decisions from YJ fix Central and South by close scores and two decisions from Canton Catholic and Cuya- hoga Falls by decisive scores. As Coach Wentz will testify, it takes eleven players on the field and a strong bench of reserve strength to win a game. As the season progressed, and the ability of the team to work together became more pol- ished, the exceptional efforts of the out- standing players became more evident. Members of the squad receiving recogni- tion for their accomplishments were senior tackles Jack Crangle and Dick Estadtg left guard Frank Mancini, and fullback Jerry Sax. Other senior players Tony Ede, Hank Meyer, Mike Neman, John Petit, and Joe Pfeiffer furnished necessary experience on the line and in the backfield. Junior mem- bers Tom Battenberg, Al Fenstomocher, Mike Hunter, Larry Morris, Pat Neman, and sophomore Jerry White played promis- ing seasons while gaining valuable know- ledge for next year's campaign. 33 Paul Hogan Right Tackle LQ, f f, C0 Sigmund Lembo Right Guard Jack Crangle Hank Meyer Left Tackle Right Halfback Senior 1' Players Tony Ede Left End Frank Mancini Joe Pfeiffer Left Guard Center Mike Neman Tom Roman Left Halfback Left Halfback Senior members of the Fighting Irish provided the spark- plug that revived the reputation of the teams gone by. Starting at center, the middle of the Irish forward wall, appeared Joe Pfeiffer and Bill Ray. Paul Hogan, Frank Mancini, and John Petit handled the chores at the guard positions. Tackles Dick Estadt and co-captain .I ack Crangle displayed superiority. Both J ack and Frank represented the Saints on the first string All Cityl' team. Besides contribut- ing his pass catching ability, left end Tony Ede also supplied vital dovvnfield blocking. The senior backfield consisted of halfbacks Hank Meyer and Mike Neman and fullback co- captain Jerry Sax. Mike proved that size doesnlt make the man, While Hank showed them how it's done with flashing speed. For driving force in the backfield the Irish relied on Jerry who also excelled on defense. Defensemen Tom Roman and Sigmund Lembo contributed to the successful season by holding the opposition to a minimum of points. Each did a terrific job in putting the Ugreen and white back in the Win column and reviving the fear of the Fighting Irish. Jerry Sax drove over from the two yard line to climax a 59- yard drive, for the lone touchdown. Saint Vincent-14 South-6 The Irishmen ended a twelve-game losing streak at the expense of the South Cavaliers. Jerry Sax plunged for the first score and tallied a later touchdown on a 9-yard jaunt. The with Sister Aloysius as sponsor is in its fourth year as one of the three hundred charter units throughout the United States, Canada, and Alaska. To become a member, each student is required to have a year's experience in either band or chorus with a HBH average in music and at least a HC average in scholar- ship. Before entering, aspirants must pass a Written examination on the rules and bylaws. In addition they must audition their talents as vocalists or instrumentalists before the officers of the society. Modern Music Masters officers are, seated, I. Sherman, E. Wozniak, R. Reymann: and standing, W. Owen, and S. Lembo. Sodality members selling Christmas cards are, left to right, J. Flanigan, R. Another Catholic Action group is the Mis- sion Club. Units such as the one at St. Vin- cent are necessary to missionaries as far away as South America or as close as Louis- iana, who depend upon all the various raffles, bake sales, and canceled stamp drives of the C.S.M.C. to carry on work for the Church. This year the projects at St. Vincent have been petitions for calendars, sewing mater- ial, discarded jewelry, and canceled stamps. Mission members also held a jewelry sale and had numerous raffles. Sister M. Benita heads St. V's C.S.M.C. unit. Prayer, study, and sacrifice guide the Catholic Student Mission Crusade Club. At St. Vincent a member should assist at Mass and Communion once a week for the mis- sions. Members attend monthly meetings, participating in discussions and reporting on articles from the mission magazine Shield. -Oc 0 v 7 '50 Row 1, left to right: J. Neitz, C. Powe, F. Keller, P. During the annual Open House, alumni parents contribute a multitude of nostalgic comments. Former graduates en- joy coming back to Saint Vincent to observe changes which have taken place since they attended school. Parents visited the school October 3 and 4 from 7:30 to 9:00. Open House provides an opportunity for them to inspect classrooms, confer with the faculty, and listen to a talk by Father O'Neill con- cerning the future events. Open House acquaints parents with the more important fundamentals of the modern school system. Relax your fingers just a little, directs Miss Patricia Aldrich, typing instructor. Learning the fundamentals oi' the touch typing system taught at St. Vincent are Mr. and Mrs. Frank A. Fenwick, guests at the annual Open House. p l ii f 9... I 5 . . . 34 5 xi A '52 Q ..........
